Saints were loyal to Ralph after a year ago - Will he stick with us???
at 17:17 7 Nov 2020

Sorry to be negative but there’s not much romance in football and the fact he’s signed for 4 years just means Saints can expect healthy compensation if he leaves before the end of the contract.
I’ve no doubts that if we finish top 8 he will be off in the summer.

I think the home results since lockdown last season totally confirm the negative impact of the St Mary’s crowd on the team.
Sad indictment actually and fans must take a hard look at themselves

Martin Chivers
at 05:55 2 Jan 2020

Correct. My uncle was always saying that it was no problem if Chivers was poached by Spurs as we had this young lad Channon in the reserves who would be even better .....
We sold him for £125,000 which was an English record at the time. Check out his goal scoring for example ....
In the 1965—66 season, he played an integral role as the club finally gained promotion to the top flight (as runners-up), scoring 30 goals from 39 games, generally from crosses provided by Terry Paine and John Sydenham. All his goals were scored from the first 29 games, and he failed to find the net after the end of February.

Defence wasn’t our problem today. Millions wasted on second rate fancy boys Boufal Adams Carrillo Djennepo etc who just can’t finish. Not good enough for the EPL

Apart from the appalling air shot 6 yards out, Long also totally missed a near post header. Indeed the shock was that he didn’t fluff the chance from which he scored. So encouraging that we’re creating these great chances though.

Better first half

Terrible defending from Vestergaard to let McGuire’s grass cutter through his legs.

Had my doubts that he was true class as he couldn’t make the Danish 11 in World Cup.

No one is bleeding us dry. We have the 9th highest wage bill in the premiership. The simple fact is management and players are not performing.

And just how does it prove that? If you earn £30k a year and get a new job paying £50k how likely are you to go back to your old job.

Dire, awful, just plain dreadful and painful to watch
at 12:27 15 Dec 2016

I actually think that given a dreadfully mediocre squad Puel is performing amazingly well to keep us mid table and in the Semis of the league cup.

How many of our midfielders and forwards would get into any of the first 11 of teams above and around us?

Indeed, how many of our forwards would get into the first 11 of ANY team in the Premier League or any of the top teams in the Championship?

None in either case.

The tippy tappy football is a function of this huge imbalance in our resources - top quality defenders, reasonable midfielders but utter shite forwards.

I for one am hopeful, however that if Boufal develops and stays fit we're only 2 decent forwards away from getting close to last season.

Suggest we relax a bit, understand this season for what it is - a restructuring process - be happy that we probably won't go down, that we just might win a cup and look forward to next season.

Why we must throw money at Schneiderlin.
at 10:42 17 Mar 2015

The Premiership self-imposed FFP wages cap ( which incidentally, Saints voted against in 2013) increases from £56m this season to £60m in 2015/16. The cap only applies to wages funded by TV money.

It would be unwise to spend this all on Morgan of course, but I would hope that the club can fund the significant increase he needs from reshuffling the current wages ( Ramirez, Osvaldo etc) and from additional revenue from sources other than TV money.

Presumably also in 2016 the new TV deal will kick in with increased income up to 70% to clubs.

I'm sure our German owners will keep wages in line with income. I'm just stating that given Morgan's proven huge importance to us we should find a way to accommodate him which may mean making tough decisions around other players.

Is Toby wasted in a standard back 4...?
at 19:41 20 Dec 2014

Actually I don't think it's about luck - it's about wages.

Generally, the league table matches the teams' relative wage bills - you pay more - you finish higher, unless the team is very badly managed - i.e Man U last season.

Talk of leaving lower clubs to "play in the Champions League" is, in my view, just a thin smoke-screen when a bumper pay rise is the real pull. eg Falcao and De Maria to Man U.

Frankly, if Saints want to achieve more they are going to have to pay more, not so much on transfer outlays but on wages - for first team players and for squad payers.

With sound financial control from our German owners I'm hoping this will happen but probably not as fast as we all would like. They will want to wait for income to increase in line with, and probably ahead of, any significant wage increases I'm sure.

So, we might well lose Toby but the reason won't be bad luck!
