I have my reservations about Madsen, but we persisted with Lyndon Dykes for over 4 years, so let's see. However, he must be willing to want to improve in the areas where he currently falls short in order to become a credible championship player. I suspect that we will make a number of changes for Saturday's FA Cup game, which I agree with, and he will in all likelihood start. It's then down to him to try and leave a better impression by figuring more prominently in the game. |

Great analysis, Westway. His anticipatory instincts, which I believe is an innate quality and can't really be taught, are clearly in evidence and it bodes well for the rest of the season. I can see the Chair to Frey source of supply getting us a decent number of goals during the remainder of this season. That's why Chair is playing the balls in earlier, as he knows that Frey will be in the vicinity and challenging in most instances, which is a far cry from the statuesque and non-anticipatory Dykes. I like. [Post edited 9 Jan 10:55]

He also beat Dunne for pace very comfortably on a few occasions when he moved to their left for the latter stages of the game. Just for balance. [Post edited 9 Jan 10:33]

That's incredible support, yet again, and for a 12:30 kick-off. |

Chair has performed at a very high level for this club for a number of years. The best indicator of that being the number of professionals from other clubs who have on a number of occasions remarked on his ability, football intelligence, threat he poses and end product. His contribution to our survival last season from MC's appointment: 7 goals and 6 goal assists (8 in total) attests to that and compared very favourably with nearly all players in the league fulfilling a similar role. Dewsbury-Hall being the most notable exception, who had a higher calibre of striker to provide goal assists aplenty. Could he be better still? Of course, but let's not diminish his end-product contributions from previous seasons, as acknowledged by his fellow peers from other clubs. Smyth has a long way to go before reaching the levels of Ilias Chair. [Post edited 7 Jan 19:11]

Very tidy finish from Frey, handball or otherwise, with his weaker foot. He's doing a good job in leading the line. Six goals in 16 games is a decent return and I expect him to score a few more in the next three league games this month. Can use both feet, good header of the ball, generally, has good movement in the penalty area and occupies defenders. [Post edited 7 Jan 12:11]

I would have thought that the general consensus among most Luton fans would be favourable. Unlike when we were in the "promised land", they didn't squander the £150 million on wasters like Barton, instead that has gone to pay for their new ground, which means that they are now secure for many years to come. We could and should have done similar with our premier league largesse when there were many plots of land available and situated in the same area as our current ground. That's now history. They won't be going down this season. We should have won comfortably last night, but in the end, it could have been a drawn game. [Post edited 7 Jan 11:34]

Totally agree Gazza1. He's a solid citizen at this level and in my opinion, it's no coincidence that his and Chair's reappearance down our left has given us better balance and has in turn played a part in our much improved series of results. Albeit from the substitutes' bench on occasions and Paal's poor performance against Swansea. Last night's result was achieved due to another steady and gritty performance by the whole team. Long may this continue, well done one and all [Post edited 7 Jan 11:17]

Ditto. And it's three league games in a week after we play Leicester. All three league games we should fancy our chances of taking points from. Love the FA Cup, but four league games in just 12 days around Christmas and the new year, will mean that a fair few of the starting eleven of late, will be either rested or on the bench. |

Leicester will definitely make loads of changes as they play Palace the following Wednesday. However, they will still have a strong team out when they can call on the likes of Daka, Iversen, Choudhury, Skipp, Cordova-Reid and Faes. With a three-game week to follow the Leicester match, I'd have our key players on the bench, as the three games afterwards are all winnable/games where we should be looking to pick up points. |

I would put Guehi, J-P Mateta and a fully fit Wharton ahead of him in terms of appeal to so-called bigger clubs. He's still achieved a lot in a relatively short period of time, since being discarded by a number of clubs prior to joining us. Just think a player like Eze is better suited to the European game. I don't see his way of playing the game, which I love to see, being accommodated by those clubs in England. I thought he played well against the scum on Saturday. |

We're still in it. I'd say all teams under 30 points at this stage are under threat. That's why I like this league. If we can get a few more wins from the next four games in January, then the spectre of relegation will start to recede. The way we are playing and competing, along with some players coming back, we should fancy our chances in each of those games. I do hope Cardiff stop playing Robinson, as he's already scored 8 league goals. Plymouth aside, it's too close to call at this stage. Just hope that we can beat Luton on Monday to get them closer to the bottom three. |

Meanwhile Frey in the championship has 4 goals in 14 league games and were it not for his injury, would have had a few more which would have placed him amongst the average amount of goals scored by forwards/attacking midfielders to date in the league. Some of whom have played in as many as 25 games. Dykes is third-choice striker at Birmingham, well behind Stansfield (too good for that league) and Alfie May. |

Totally agree. Smyth has improved but this is based on a very small sample size. For some perspective: Dembele achieved the same assists and goals as Smyth, in just 10 league games, which is hugely impressive for a novice in this division. Yet the consensus held by some was that Dembele wasn't quite ready yet and needed to be rested, prior to his injury. Dare I say it, but Paal is only one goal assist behind Smyth in the league, so I take it that he's also not having a bad season either. Let's leave aside the comparisons to Chair, Sinton, Thomas et al, as they are just fanciful. Interesting how the same/similar levels of contributions from our players in the league, can be perceived so differently. Keep it up Paul. [Post edited 2 Jan 18:00]

I wouldn't be loaning out Walsh at all. Nardi has been on the deck recently, but yesterday, he was simply feigning that he had been impeded when Watford scored a valid goal from the corner. Arsenal have infringed and fouled goalkeepers far worse in corner situations, than anything Watford did to Nardi. We got away with it yesterday and Nardi needs to come up with a more convincing counter measure than going to the ground when barely touched by an opposing player. Luton will test him sternly in such situations on Monday, I'm sure, as that moment will not have gone unnoticed by future opponents. I fear that we could lose Walsh at the end of the season because for mine, he's already as good as a number of goalkeepers in this league and deserves more game time, which he won't get here. Respectfully, you need to watch that particular passage of play again. Smyth mis-controlled the ball whilst Ashby overlapped. Watford exploited the space left vacant by Ashby and broke on us to score with the aid of a deflected shot. To level all the blame on Paal beggars belief. I thought Ashby played well today but we were leading 2-0 at the time and there was no need for him to bomb forward in advance of Smyth at that stage. I suspect that if that incident had arisen on the left side between Chair and Paal, your willingness to absolve Ashby would not be so forthcoming in the case of Paal. We, yes the whole team, played well today against a decent Watford side. Yet it would appear that certain players are blamed regardless, even when the source of the fault clearly emanated on our right side. Well played the entire team today. [Post edited 1 Jan 21:02]

Werder Bremen! They're seventh in the Bundesliga and a few points shy of a "champions" league place. Ganzer Unsinn. [Post edited 31 Dec 2024 16:19]
