I agree with practically all that guardian report. Really well balanced. |

Haven't looked at the papers today but I'd like to have the Mail, Express and Telegraph on my bingo card. |

It's been 3 months. I'll make my opinion in a couple of years. Which of the peerages do you think are unwarrented? |
| Forum Reply | Starmer! Wow! at 13:14 26 Sep 2024
Perception is just that. It's changable and opinion based. As for the football and concerts, provinding there's nothing given in return I'd rather they be freebies than massive taxpayer funded security operations. Comparing to the Tories (atm) is a false equivalence. What has Starmer done that's as bad a Covid fast lane (a la Michelle Mone), or a dubious peerage (Evgeny Alexandrovich)? |

Who had been negativly affected? Who has had an unreasonably benefit? As I said, there are loads of these things to be critical of but not this one IMO |

But nobody actually paid is my point. It's not like Alli is running an air b and b. It didn't cost any one anything. |
| Forum Reply | Starmer! Wow! at 10:20 26 Sep 2024
Why is that a problem? The 20k figure is arbitrary as a cost has to be attached for all gifts. To me (as things stand) Lord Alli gave use of a room, at no cost to anyone to Starmer and for no benefit. If that changes and we find that Alli was given a government contract or anything like that, I'll be all over it. For now, a non-story made for click bait. |

I'm talking specifically about the flat issue. What was wrong with it? |

Only just read up properly on the GCSE accommodation thing. What a complete non-story. There’s plenty of things to be critical of Starmer and the new Labour govenrnment for, this isn’t one enough. |

I went through a phase of saving to go to a posh restaurant as a treat and really enjoyed it. However if I could only choose one food to live on for the rest of my life it would be a toasted bacon sandwich! |

Absolutely WR. Pay has become key theme as it’s seen as a way as fending off other issues. The key one for me is reversing the demonisation of some sectors of the public servants. This has come from government. Look at the likes of what Braveman did to the police, or Gove did to teachers. I say the same thing to anyone who says public service is a doss. If that’s the case, why can’t they recruit? Want to be a teacher with 9 to 3 days, 14 weeks holiday and a gold plated final salary pension? Do it. With GCSE/O level maths in the bank you could be in the classroom in 12 months. [Post edited 24 Sep 18:07]

Pay is certainly part of the issue. We want a world class health service but some don’t want to pay the rate to retain doctors and nurses. I know you keep banging the drum Major and you’re right, all labour have done in the main is agree with independent pay review boards. These are not unfair rewards. The only other option is strikes and public services getting worse. Don’t pay people and they go to do something else. |

If you’re not an Oasis fan then the performance last night wouldn’t have changed your mind. If you are an Oasis fan not only would last night’s performance not changed your mind, but wouldn’t have surprised you in the slightest. |

I read today that in 2001, there were 500 people in jail for serious sexual offences. That number has now tripled. I don’t know if that means things are getting more common or more people are getting caught 🤷🏻 |

It definitely looks wrong Rayns, but I’m waiting to see if the donor gets any benefit before I can say how unethical it is. Even so, it’s sadly not illegal so those comparing it to say, the number 10 parties are peddling a false equivalence. |

The optics are bad around freebies for sure, but I’m yet to see what I consider to be a smoking gun. Take the glasses or the clothes. for example. If the diner just wanted some free advertising I have much less of an issue than if he was given a government contract for something. I also think some are making comparisons between freebies and stuff paid for by the taxpayer. IMO these are different issues. |
