Martin fighting for his job…
at 11:00 5 Sep 2024

"but SR are hard nosed businessmen, and don’t respond like emotionally distressed supporters.

Yeah, they ditched the hopeless Nathan Jones due to poor results & Russell Martin will follow suit if results carry on as they are. You can't keep losing every week when the board have just funded you with £100M worth of players.

I think every fan on this forum (just about) is willing to give RM more time. But if he goes another half-a-dozen league games without any success by playing his favourites, ignoring better players on the bench, and doesn't change his stubborn ways of playing by becoming more flexible, then 'SR, the hard nosed businessmen' will overlook the fancy, possession-based football that has ultimately proved fruitless by sacking him.

I'd give him the next 5 PL games: Man Utd (H), Ipswich (H), Bournemouth (A), Arsenal (A), and Leicester (H).

It's an old, old cliché but still a relevant one ; football is a results driven business.

No points deduction for Leicester
at 19:42 4 Sep 2024

I see Aston Villa were hours away from facing a points deduction for breaching football’s financial rules before selling Douglas Luiz to Juventus.

Talking of Villa, their fans are up in arms because they're being charged (fleeced) £97 for tickets to each of their Champions League home games. This comes two days after Uefa announced a reduction in the maximum amount clubs could charge away fans for attending Champions League matches to around £50.

Man City and Chelsea must have very, very clever (and expensive) lawyers to get away with what they do. Likewise Leicester who found a glaring loophole - thanks to the very clever lawyer Nick de Marco KC who's even cleverer than the Premier League Profitability & Sustainability Rules' own panel!

!!!!!!!!!! Russell Martin out !!!!!!!!!!!
at 11:59 3 Sep 2024

I would love to see Potter get back into the management game & replace RM.

His football was terrific to watch at Brighton and with the squad we now have, I'm sure he'd keep us up which, let's face it, is the goal for this season.

Russell Martin is a busted flush - stubborn - and is quoted as saying he's not going to change his ways. In which case, we'll be gone by the time we're opening presents & scoffing the turkey dinner.

Southampton At Brentford The Damning Verdict
at 18:26 2 Sep 2024

Well, we live in hope.

I look forward to a 'new look' Saints very soon... but won't hold my breath. The bloke loves Jack Stephens & Will Smallbone and I just can't see him dropping them. One maybe - but not both.

Southampton At Brentford The Damning Verdict

It's clear that RM has his favourites and that's why we're getting the same results with the same performances. I personally think he's trying to give the team that gained promotion a go through his stubbornness and misguided loyalty - even though several of the players simply aren't good enough for the Premier League.

SR have backed him in the Summer transfer window (bar perhaps that experienced striker we desperately needed) but you get the feeling that RM likes to get to know the new players personally & mentally before playing them. I reckon he likes to mentally assess them, find out what and who they are in their brain over a period of weeks before he thinks "Yeah, this player could do a job". Meanwhile, we plod on each week with the same old results while Russell holds a 'new player seminar' for all the new squad members, week after week after week.

Truth is, RM is a somewhat strange person with strange ways. He strikes me as a narcissist and someone who is so blinkered, so fixated on one formula, that he'll never be told what to do or accept advice form anyone. It's his way - take it or leave it. That's fine when it's working... but it clearly isn't. And worryingly, SR I feel, will just leave it to him to it because they themselves have a poor record of appointing managers ever since Ralph left. Yes, RM got us promoted and we are all truly thankful for that. But so did club legend Nigel Adkins... and look what happened to him when the board back then were ruthless & knew what it took to manage in the top flight!

Should Russell Martin be sacked after saying he won’t compromise?
at 14:46 1 Sep 2024

Russell Martin will never change his ways - not ever. He doesn't do 'Plan B's' or change his way of doing things - and happily accepts a defeat so long as the players are sticking to his way of playing. In his own words:

Didn't he leave for Chelsea - only to return having realised he'd made a mistake?

If Saints let him go - or rather the tippy tappy chappy picks his favourites over him - then the board need hanging. Dibling is about the only shining young light we have for the future.

The only sack he's getting is captain Jack's ball-sack - resting on his chin twice a week over at Staplewood.

SAINTS manager Russell Martin accepted he must "live and die by the sword" as he vowed his team would not stop playing in his vision.

"When you make a mistake this way, everyone wants to talk about it. That's the context of what is normal and acceptable for British football, I guess.

"Also for a young British manager, I really feel that. Because if I'm not English, or apparently Scottish, I think it gets questioned way, way less."

Martin added: "We're going to stick with what we're doing. In five years of my career, it's got me this far.

"I will live and die by the sword, I know that, but I'd much rather do it this way and actually enjoy some of the moments the team gives me.

"Of course, it hurts me when we have the mistakes we have today but it's my job to fix that. It's the job of the coach, parent, teacher. It's all the same.

"Work out what the problems are and find solutions. The problem isn't that we want to do it in that way. So much of it is not tactical.

"It's about feeling and at the minute we're feeling a little bit tense in certain actions and being punished for that. It's my job to make them stop feeling that."

Martin was asked how he would be able to ensure the team kept playing effectively under increased pressure, with the defeats mounting up.

"I think we've got enough evidence to show the players some of the stuff," he insisted.

"In the first half, we had a move that ended up with Adam Armstrong, which should have been one-on-one with the goalkeeper and should end up in more.

"Some of the chances we have come from the build-up. The players do some incredible things but we get punished for two.

"It's about weighing up the evidence and showing them. It's not just my feeling. It's not a subjective thing," Martin continued.

"Objectively, we have some brilliant moments of breaking the press and really hurting Brentford. It just needs to come to more."

RM said post-match that Dibling & Fernandes didn't start today because they were too fatigued after the Cardiff game midweek.

Well find out who was responsible for that terrible decision & bollock them severely.

Oh...

Aye. We can't have the likes of Dibling picking the ball up & running at the oppo's goal. Who does he think he is FFS?

Back on the bench for you next time Dibling. Good luck explaining your forward attacking style to the gaffer later. You're well in the sh1t son.

Calamity defending yet again.

Still 20 minutes left yet to make this even more embarrassing.

You're out of your depth in this league RM.
