Petrolul Ploiesti V Swansea city matchday thread on 20:42 - Aug 29 by longlostjack | Thought we were riding a few tackles and staying clear of injury - sensible. As for the doomsters - it's Europe and it's a cup - look what happened to Udinese and Stuttgart tonight. |
And St. Etienne... lost to crappy Danish team...

We were gash though. Whilst it's nice to progress in Europe (although the quality of opposition hasn't been great) the lacklustre nature of our performances thus far this season are a cause for concern.

I disagree. I wouldn't call the home performances against Man United, Malmo and Petrolul lacklustre in any shape or form. I didn't see the Spurs game so can't comment on it. Our away game against Malmo was a decent enough performance which got the job done and our performance this evening was good considering the fact that we were without our captain, £12m signing and both of our regular wide men. These types of games are never going to be easy.

I agree that these games aren't going to be easy but looking at our style of play and individual performances, there wasn't a lot of positives apart from getting through to the group stages. Whilst I do think it wasn't a game to pick up injuries, where was the personal pride from the players? the mental strength? In my opinion we are looking as a team of individuals with very little team play which was our strength under Rodgers. Whilst I think he had taken us as far as he could, the players reacted positively to the 'name' of Laudrup. Has that hype worn away?

I think there were positives this evening though. Tremmel had a very good game and Pozuelo looks a class act, I also thought that Donnelly made a good account of himself and was unlucky not to get on the score sheet. As far as the league is concerned I don't think many of us thought we would get much out of the first 2 games and we have to be patient.

I agree about Tremmel, and Donnelly kept going but needs to go out on loan to a championship side to get more experience. Too big a step up from reserves to Premier. Pozuelo looks the part but early days yet. We still need to do the dirty work earning the right to play with style. At the moment I do believe we are trying to play with style without the team support. The ball in the past was played to players with purpose, but now seems a way of passing the buck. As far as the 2 games go, I didn't expect anything but hope signs of improvement start coming through. imo we tend to carry about 4 players a game when heads drop easily

On the BBC website just now Laudrup was saying how unhappy he was at how many chances we missed on the counter attack. That was always therrisk with giving Donnelly a chance up front. I think Michu would have buried at least two of those.
