Who to replace Bobby Grant ?? on 21:24 - Jun 17 by R442D | Hill suggested in his interview he has replacements in mind. But also says until Bobby leaves, he's very much in his plans. Donnelly, Bunny and Godwin also important to give a chance too. Says that he really likes Donnelly, shows passion and determination. But Done would be a great shout, great winger could help give Donnelly or the other front men a good ball to finish. |
I trust Keith to do what is best for Dale, but this concerns me. It has Grant leaving at the end of the transfer window for a undervalued fee and no time to replace him written all over it. Essentially, we're playing a game of chance banking on him not actually leaving. Risky strategy.
Who to replace Bobby Grant ?? on 23:44 - Jun 17 with 2477 views | rich_dale | We will def at least need another proper no 9. Can't lose Grimes, Gornell and Grant and expect what we have left to do the job. Expect Gray to really some through this season though and if Abadaki has something to offer then that would be a bonus.

I'm not being funny, anyone can do the job grimes did. Its not hard to stroll around the pitch out of the game.

I highly doubt Keith would allow such a situation to happen. He'll know a long time before, if a fee is offered for Grant, he will have a replacement lined up. Accordingly, just for a rumour: Grant is being looked at by Fleetwood. Wouldn't really surprise me, especially is Barker is still in charge there.

I hope you're right about Fleetwood, they're one of few clubs at this level that could stump up a decent amount for Grant. That said, Chesterfield aren't short of a few quid either. Graham Alexander is manager at Fleetwood. If you're thinking of Ritchie Barker, he's still at Crawley.

Why is everyone shocked this has happened? This is a massive blow to the team as I personally feel bobby is best player in the squad, but supporters shouldn't be shocked. If you think back to this time last year we had a bid rejected for bobby, but he wanted to leave scunny for dale to play under Coleman and be closer to his family. I 'presume' Coleman said make a bit of a stink and we got him on a free. What's the difference between now and then??? One of his reasons he said for leaving scunny was the fans didn't take to me.

I believe the story went that Grant was in tears due to the hostile reception he would get off the Scunny fans. Somehow Knill swallowed it, and decided to let us take him off their hands. Likewise, I'm not sure any cash actually changed hands with the move, but I dare say there will be a sizeable sell on clause. We all knew at the time that it had been engineered to force through the move. it's what he's been taught to do.

Who to replace Bobby Grant ?? on 20:22 - Jun 17 by SalwaDale | Agree with a lot of this. I'm expecting us to play GD up front with an ever rotating three behind, two out wide but interchanging as Hill used previously. |
I generally hate to predict teams/formations etc because only one man's views count at the end of the day , but I suspect this might be close to the truth . Given the pattern of retentions , signings etc it would not surprise me if KH went back to his effective Div1 formation with , as WD suggests , a lone striker (GD) , three interchanging attackers behind (I thought Grant , Vicenti and Henderson) , backed by a solid midfield two (Kennedy/replacement , plus Tutte) , and with the standard back 4 . On that basis , I'd certainly expect Grant's possible loss to be offset , even temporarily , by , say Hogan or Heri , although I would also agree some cover for GD might be needed , perhaps via loan signings as required/needed .

Can see no reason to believe that Cavanagh won't be a regular. Hill clearly rates him.

Think Hery is more of a defensive/central midfielder than an attacking one.

If it is Chesterfield a swap for Marc Richards would do nicely and makes a lot of sense, BG and JK are most likely our highest earners, so hopefully we could offer wages to temp MR if they both leave.

Its not a criticism , but I think playing Cavanagh as a regular central midfielder is going back a bit to the "square peg in round hole" syndrome we had with Eyre . I accept the guy performed pretty consistently for long spells in that role last season , but I'm a bit cynical that someone the wrong side of thirty and whose only really played at full back throughout his career , can suddenly transform himself into the high quality midfielder that we need to push on and upwards . I don't doubt though he's a great player to have around the squad , and one who has now proved himself sufficiently versatile and committed to play an important role in the coming season .

Every team needs a Cavanagh, he won me around last season with his workrate. When you consider the amount of times he wins the ball back or breaks up play its inevitable that at times the odd pass might go astray, but i think he will be a key figure in Hillys plans.
Who to replace Bobby Grant ?? on 18:41 - Jun 20 with 1245 views | Brierls | Rene Howe is available. I know we only paid half of his wages (if that!) when we had him on loan from Posh, and not sure what wage he'd command now, but York have offered him a deal. He's had some pretty good performances against us for Torquay, looking like a much better player than when he was here. No news on Matty Done signing for Hibs or anybody else. I'd have thought Done's wages would be an issue, but he'd defo be worth a punt if he's willing to come. He'd be perfect for any of the roles sitting just behind a main striker.

Good calls on both. I am questioning some of the things KH said in his first spell though - he claimed (I think) that it was Flitcroft's book of contacts that found new signings, seems to be doing things the same way without him. Really can't wait for the next few seasons.

Howe would be an excellent signing. But it would mean Donnelly would only get a game if we play a front two.

Last I heard, Hibs wanted to sign Done, but on lesser terms than he was on at Barnsley. All gone quiet since. He's probably waiting for a better offer.
