Are we suddenly one of the most hated Prem teams? 10:21 - Aug 16 with 3891 viewsqueensparker

Seems like it to me. Reading that Swansea preview, I think we're going to see a lot more of that type of thing this season.

Was chatting to a Spurs mate the other day and he said the same, along the lines of "it's weird, everyone used to quite like QPR, but we all hate you now".

Why is it? All the money we're spending (no more than, say, Fulham over the years)? Having the unpopular Warnock / Hughes as managers? Flavio and his 'boutique' bollox which everyone thinks is still hanging around? Barton's performance on the last day? A new generation of fans who have no idea of our history? The fact we actually are able to raise an atmosphere at home which frightens the Prem JCLs? The idea we 'got away with it' on the Faurlin saga? All of the above?

Not being funny, but for all the talk of a new ground, ambition etc, why would someone pick, say, QPR (or Fulham) over someone like Sunderland, Villa, Everton etc? All much bigger clubs, more established, all pay relatively good wages. Can surely only be the attraction of London life (especially for overseas players) and money? Bobby Zamora cited ambition when he signed, but what's he expecting? CL football? A league title? Finishing in about the same spots as Fulham have done recently? It's not like he'll be around to play in your new ground, same as most of the rest of them.

Most of our players are on about £25kpw with a handful on £35-45kpw - pretty sure you're paying considerably bigger wages than that.

I also think your previous board, Warnock/Hughes and Barton don't help on the popularity front.

‘Not being funny, but for all the talk of a new ground, ambition etc, why would someone pick, say, QPR (or Fulham)’

Ha ha because most fans do not ‘pick’ the club they support.

It might be different at the Cottage as it seems the sort of place that ‘fans’ who pick clubs might choose.

Nice posh suburban setting, by the Thames, neutral seating, Pimms in the bar, celeb statues etc.

I was talking about the players, hence mentioning wages. We might have to work harder than the big clubs to fill our ground, but we haven't resorted to paying punters to turn-up!

How do you know that any of those clubs were in for the same players though?

Zamora signed 95% for the cash and 5% because he didn't like Jol i'd guess. The fact he didn't have to move house probably helped too.

The £10m you spent on Bryan Ruiz would pay our wage bill for a while i'd suspect though and i doubt Petric, Rodallega and Dembele etc were childhood Fulham fans.

I did lump Fulham in as an example of clubs to whom money might be a bigger pull than the very slim prospect of playing CL football/winning things.

I also acknowledged that what you don't spend on transfer fees, you can lob towards wages (as we did with Schwarzer) - but I'm sure your average Talksport texter-inner/messageboard muppet doesn't really take that into consideration.

Zamora - Combination of liking Hughes, money, not getting on well with Jol/Fulham being keen to sell, but my point is that everyone citing ambition - what are they really likely to achieve at a club like Rangers or Fulham? 7th? I struggle to think that you're not paying more than other clubs.

7th place, UEFA cup qualification or a cup win is pretty much the upper limit of what any club outside of the big boys can achieve in the premiership though!

I think we all know ambition is just one of those words people throw around.

I'd love to see a club come from no where to win the prem or even take 4th place - like Montpellier in France did last season - but it just won't happen.

Reading and Swansea never liked us 2 yrs ago so why would they start liking us now ?

As for being hated by other clubs,i have not noticed it myself.....we have always been the club where other clubs fans ruffle our hair whilst saying aahhh good old QPR ( apart from scum fans ) and maybe i have blinkers on because i don't see any change in that.

Most players are just mercenaries nowadays (Anelka for example). However if none of the big 4 or 5 CL challenging clubs are in for you and you have a choice of London life or Birmingham, Sunderland life etc, I know which I'd choose. The big advantage clubs in London have in attracting players not wanted by the Top 4 challengers is location. If we weren't in London I doubt some of our signings would have signed given alternative options, but if you have money London life is fantastic. It's also far easier for foreigners to settle in London then elsewhere in the country I imagine. The publicity we have had means that people are more aware of us then, say, Norwich, and this brings resentment etc. But who cares, so long as we don't end up with an expensive disjointed team stuck at the bottom of the table.

Funnily enough said the same thing about the Toon (soft spot after Uni) when they signed him and Bowyer. Wish he wasn't anywhere near our club but there you go.

Agree about London - especially for overseas players, whereas it might not appeal to older domestic players who have young families and enjoy living in some affluent suburb/market town near Brum/Sunderland/Liverpool.

And I know players get a nice signing-on fee when they join on a Bosman, but they also often do when they renew with their current club, so I can't help thinking you must have offered Green more than WHU, for example. Rob Green presumably hasn't moved to QPR for the opportunity to win the PL*. Same as Pav Pog hasn't moved to Reading to play CL football. Rodallega, however, has moved to Fulham purely for the opportunity to play for the same club as his childhood idol, Gordon Davies.

* I know this because I can read Robert Green's mind.

So, is it good to be hated? Does it mean you have 'arrived'? Is it the must-have fashion accessory for any Premiership team?

There was never a problem with Swansea until their chairmen tried to get themselves promoted by legal challenge and things got a bit heated online, likewise Norwich.

In the prem obviously the combo of Barton and Warnock was/is an issue for some. Chelsea was reignited by what happened at LR.

Makes me laugh how Fulham fans moan at us about spending given how they got to where they were.

Man U hate us for losing at City

City love us for losing at City. Arsenal, Spurs and Liverpool are peeved we did not roll over and lose to them

We're one of the biggest clubs in world football, and the only people who hate us are Brentford and Gillingham. I attribute this to us being a friendly bunch, largely a bit crap for huge chunks of our history, and having an old school ground in a picturesque setting.

A large chunk of Al Fayed's reported £200m went on buying the ground back, buying and building a training ground, redeveloping The Cottage, buying a brilliant statue of dead Pop King Michael Jackson (mega hurrah), installing a golden, bomb-proof khazi at LR and buying Steve Marlet (boo). Not sure our net spend is quite as epic as you might think - and you wasted plenty in the Zelic(sp?), Hately, Sheron era. But agreed, we can't criticise other clubs for spending big.

Worth also noting that when Al Fayed turned-up, we'd just been promoted from the 4th and had built up so much momentum that it was only a matter of time before we steam-rollered our way back into the elite of European club football. Even with Rob Scott up front, that was always on the cards.

Who cares? The better we get, the more people will hate us.

I hate most teams for no real rational reason, it's football, we're only meant to love one club.

we should get together, this is what I'm like, I hate every team and every game I go to I find myself wanting to beat that's days oppo more than any others on previous match days - even the wycombe pre-season friendly, it's completely irrational.

As a QPR player you could easily live in some very nice places just outside London, Marlow, parts of Maidenhead, Amersham etc none of which are that far from QPRs training base as well.
Marlow or Sunderland? (or it's nice surrounds) bloody cold up there grim as in winter

It's because we have a small, old fashioned stadium and they think why them? They'll change their tune once we become an established premiership club with a bigger stadium.

I think it's great, they are really jealous and see us as a threat. Long may it continue!

Couldn't really care less what some folk think of us. Each and everyone to their own. I think hatred of us goes back quite a long way and not since we got promoted to the Prem last year. I can recall fans spouting venom about us back in the 70's and 80's. We were labelled as a team of fancy over paid upstarts, a small fish in a big pond and a team run by crooks. Well the latter was/is certainly true for much of the time.
A lot of that hatred was down to shear jealousy and ignorance, especially from fans of smaller clubs in and around the London area. That said we also did and still do to a lesser extent, attract a certain amount of admiration from some fans. I think fans today are generally less respectful of other teams anyway no matter who they are. They are not so driven or influenced by league standings or how many trophies are won any more, it's how much money a club has and where it comes from that gets fans heckles up. There is a lot of begrudgery in football especially when money is involved.
But think on it. We have a long way to go to reach the mega hated status of clubs such as Leeds, Millwall, Chelsea and Luton to name but a few.

There aint half been some clever bastards.

Everyone can like Swansea and Norwich because all the "Big Four" t*ssers can patronise them and then forget em when they go down in a year or two. Which tehy will. Because Fernandes has actually spent a few million - peanuts compared to what ManU spend on a single player mind you - we've shown we don't know our place. Norwich and Swansea can sneer that we're not trying to pull off a miracle every year and the big boys can sneer that we're signing has-beens on big wages.

Neither of them has a fecking clue as to how a club of our size might actually stay in the Premiership long enough to build a business, or how the Championship clubs are going to stay in business in the next 10 years or so.

Don't disagree with what Konk says but of course Fulham were criticised - not least by us - for using Fayed's money to get up and stay up, and they're pretty much a model for what we need to do.
