Must admit I wasn’t sure about him early doors
The red card v Rovers could’ve crumbled him
His sub appearance today was great though wasn’t it? If only for that superb bit of skill on the left wing taking two Watford players out of the game????

He’s getting a lot more awareness of the Championship and showing better and better game smarts as we go. He’ll make mistakes but he’s got a good attitude and shows great endeavour.

I’m not 100% sold yet but I’m now filing him in the column of probably a successful signing by the club.

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

The thing is that most of these signings (not all) need time and the Championship doesn't give you time. It's interesting that with so many injuries now that some of these players are having to get more minutes and a few of them are starting to show a bit of what they can do and what those who brought them in were hoping for.

Never knowingly right.

Still gives the ball away in bad areas from time to time but looks totally at home now with the brutality that referees allow here. And at least he wants to go forward.

MOTM for me today, which is mad because he wasn't on the pitch when we were playing well in the first half

Shit but local

Compare today with posts a week or so back.
I'm as bad if not worse than most I'll readily admit.

Marti said he was dropped to give him a rest.

But the reality is that he was dropped to avoid Field and him, picking up a yellow each and then both being out for Norwich. Possibly he would have been out more as he collected a red. We could not afford to lose our complete midfield like that with Colback out.

But I beleive the card count resets now so, while Field is out, Varane can come in for him and Morgan was okay.

Getting that draw away to Watford with so many players out and caution taken with Varane paid off for Marti.

Varane will be Colbacks long-term replacement as I am guessing that Colback, Andersen, and Fox will be let go at the end of the season. We just need replacements for the others now.

Looks strong, competitive and forward thinking.

Much improved from earlier in the season.

One piece of outrageous skill also.

The yellow card reset is after next Saturday so Varane will still be in danger of collecting 5 cards v Norwich. But if that happens, with Colback returning and Field serving the one match ban in that game, we should be okay v Oxford.

If all or most of our summer signings now look like they might start to come good, a lot of us are going to have egg on our over-reacting faces. Let's hope those of us who need to - I guess I'll be one - will be willingly tucking into some humble eggy pie.

Think you could add Cook to that list of players going at the end of the season. And Frey.

The club has options to extend Cook and Colback's contracts to 2026, as it also does with Chair's contract.

Andersen, Fox and Frey, plus Paal and Dunne, all have expiring contacts next year.

Who stays and who goes is anyone's guess at this stage.

Out of that lot , I'd keep Dunne and Cook.

Occasional providers of half decent House music.

Agreed Cook will be 34 in April but hes got more football in him at Championship level yet, leads by example, also it would be criminal to let Jimmy Dunne leave on a free.

Yes but that's what 5 points and 2 clean sheets does when you've been waiting for a win for 3 very long months.

I'm normally in the "let's wait to see where we are in February" camp but found myself getting very very worried after the Boro and Leeds games.

The other good thing about this week (as pointed out above) is the fact that we can see with our own eyes the fact that several of the summer signings are FINALLY getting up to speed.

Managed to bamboozle two Watford players today when he went down a blind alley, was quite the footwork to then come away with the ball in a decent area. Loved that.

Done well when he came on yesterday and his performances are better.....he is improving and understanding Championship football much better. Still want more from him but progress is being made.

As players are added back in after injury, combined with the fast wake-up call for the newbies; we could be looking far more positively towards mid table mediocrity by January.

Great that we now have something to look forward to with the return of our core players (thanks to the announcement from the club)!

Fantastic in his defensive role since he came back from the suspension, has learned the pace and is much better at reading the game and putting himself in the right place to break things up. Still can be frustrating on the ball, he has plenty of ability but he quite often slows things down when it comes to him and has a bit of a tendency to play a loose pass or run himself into trouble. I think he'll get there, he clearly has the talent and he has played some decent balls through - now that he's learned how quick he has to be to impose himself on other players in this league he'll have to learn how to handle them doing the same to him.

Cook's looking increasingly slow, not only in general play where his dropping deep is problematic, but also in terms of his footwork when challenging players. Next year it'll be even worse. He'll be difficult to replace though because of his other attributes.

Agree on Dunne though. Good lad, works hard, embedded in the club. Spending money to replace him would be a waste when you could simply resign him.

Varane looks good. To be fair to him I thought he was looking decent in the Blackburn game before he got sent off and it looked like we were going to win it

Was thinking the same thing. And also look at the 3 games he missed due to suspension after that….3 defeats, 7 conceded against Hull, Derby and Portsmouth.

He’s definitely in tune with championship football now . Even Madsen is to a small degree .
I think Varane could end up being a cult hero here .

Agree Varane is getting to grips with Championship and looking good. Also watching from the stands yesterday thought Madsen had a decent game and is also improving, some nice passing. Things are looking up in the midfield, it is still up front where the issues are, but again Celar starting to improve.

Agreed. It's too early to assess which players will leave next summer. Hopefully in general this season's poor start caused in part by the need to bed in and gel so many new players, will persuade Management to keep player turnover to the minimum necessary to strengthen the squad in the summer.
