Electric vehicles 10:04 - Nov 26 with 2185 views | Boundy | Are they really the future? With take up of new electric vehicles being much slower than predicted and the pursuit towards cleaner alternative are we seeing a slow decline in the use of electric cars. Its been announced that Northvolt , one of the wests largest manufacturers of vehicle batteries is filing for bankruptcy due to a number of factors ,one of which being BMW cancelling an order worth up to 2 billion euros.

Electric vehicles on 18:30 - Nov 28 with 561 views | johnlangy | I know very little about electric cars and batteries. But Greg Jackson, the CEO of Octopus Energy, explained some very interesting things on QT last Thursday. EV batteries now last for 600,000 miles. When they are due for renewal they can either be recycled or used in your home as a storage facility. People always ask what will happen when the wind doesn't blow. Apparently they can store almost a weeks worth of the power needed to run your home. He also talked about interconnectors between different countries so that when the wind doesn't blow in the UK there will always be another country where it is blowing. But as the UK is one of the windiest countries in the world there shouldn't be so much of a problem. A number of you have mentioned China. And everyone talks about China opening coal powered power stations all the time so what's the point of us even making an effort carbon wise. According to GJ last year China built 59% of all renewables in the world and many of those coal power stations are being mothballed. And the reason they are doing it is because they know that renewables are cheaper now than fossil fuel power. And they are doing it not because they are nice people but because it benefits them. And as a result they will be even more competitive in years to come. As I said, I know almost nothing about this subject. But i'm willing to listen to people like him because he would know far more I would bet than anyone on this forum and most other forums.

If renewables are cheaper then why are our bills going up? UK share of CO2 pollution...0.88% China's share....32.88% How much they can store is a real question and I don't really trust his answer. Can they really store a weeks worth of power to run the whole country? And will that still be true if we are all using EV's? Will that be true when we no longer use any gas or coal? I don't think we should make any plans that include possible reliance on other countries, we should aim to be self sufficient.

But they run on electricity, which is free energy that is generated by wind and sun. Other than the a few problems you mention, what's not to like about them.

I did enjoy the long sermon about how electric cars are great from a guy who makes a living from selling electricity. Seriously though, battery technology is nowhere near replacing internal combustion engines which is why car companies are pleading with the Govt to change the targets. If the furthest I went was Tenby then absolutely I'd consider having one. As it isn't, then I won't. Hybrid maybe. That's about it. When the time comes and batteries can be recharged in five minutes with no adverse affect on their long term viability then more people will change. Until then they won't. [Post edited 28 Nov 21:33]

Renewable energy is very cheap, but because the price we pay for electricity is linked to gas which is the most expensive generated electricity it pushes up the cost of renewables.

Correct major. It's linked to the global price of gas. I don't understand why. As renewables are generated in the UK for the UK and not sold on the global market the link, as far as I understand it, could be removed by the Government. I don't understand why they don't do that.

'He receives a substantial remuneration to persuade individuals like you that electric vehicles represent the future and are the ultimate solution for a sustainable world.' A strange response mangohilljack. I can only think that you didn't understand what I intended with the post. As I said, I know very little about the ins and outs of electric cars and whether they are good or bad. But in order to understand I listen to and read what others say and come to a conclusion based on that and my own findings. The point of my post was to let others know what Greg Jackson said in order for them to do the same. I'm not taking what he says as fact but am willing to consider it.

I thought it was about the subsidies? All our renewable power gets massive subsidy from the public purse and then we pay large bills too.

Revenue. Homes heated by electric…cooking via electric….electric powered vehicles etc. The cost per kw/h for electricity will never drop to manageable levels regardless if we remove fossil fuels from the energy sector. Why would it?

Climate change isn't a hoax, it's a natural phenomena that's been happening to the planet before the wheel was invented, but it's only now that some have realised that it's a fantastic method to exploit money from the guilble.

Surprisingly the huge reduction in biodiversity and issues with pollution through forever chemicals and microplastics get no air time despite them being more threatening to the planet.

I'm familiar with that and there's a lot more where that came from. They're usually caused by the same gases that humans are emitting now and are followed by a massive extinction. From that article. "A huge outpouring of lava, known as the Deccan Traps, occurred in India during the latest Cretaceous. Some paleontologists believe that the carbon dioxide that accompanied these flows created a global greenhouse effect that greatly warmed the planet." I'd rather avoid that. If we could tax stupidity we'd be fine. [Post edited 29 Nov 22:43]
