Many non league players & officials have been charged & suspended for longer periods than Toney received. I might be wrong, but I think some were banned for life. This includes programme editors, groundsman etc. Of course, a lot of players at that level place bets themselves, but it only takes one person (or betting company) to lodge a complaint & they will be investigated to the full. The explanation I've seen for the ban going down to tier 8 is because numerous bets are apparently placed on these games across the world!

Naughty boy Ivan Toney on 20:47 - May 17 by swisscottage | Well I guess it also bans him from the England squad over the summer. But in reality if they'd delayed the ban to start from the start of the season Southgate wouldn't have picked him anyway. Its most likely the end of any chance he had of getting into the England setup |
I think he could easily get back in the squad. We're not blessed with strikers and he's looked one of the best, would do well at Man Utd I think, although he may now remain at Brentford for his career.

Naughty boy Ivan Toney on 10:57 - May 19 with 3009 views | LazyFan | Will he be the same player when he returns and if he is, it may take some time to get back up to those high levels. Remember, this is someone who struggled to resist betting, knowing it was totally wrong for him to do so and the punishment could be a life ban. Yet still did it anyway. Mentally are they strong enough to come back? For Brentford, this is a massive problem as we saw when you lose your top forward (with Les) if he's not replaced properly you could quickly get relegated. Which is why pony bog standard forwards still get transferred for gazillions as goals win games. And why everyone wants not just one but a whole stable of them!

Naughty boy Ivan Toney on 10:59 - May 19 with 3007 views | daveB | could have been a lot worse for him if the ban didn't include the summer break, sure he'll be back scoring goals but might cost Brentford a few quid as doubt he will go for the mega money now

Could have been a lot worse but have to wait and see the details of the charges when they are released in the coming weeks.Would like to think he would sign a new contract as the club will be paying him for the 8 months he’s off but that isn’t going to happen so hopefully we can sell him asap while he has a value to the club, his contract runs out summer 2025.I’m hoping as recent history has shown we can still improve after losing key players.

It's because it's not just betting, but illegal betting - and the organised crime element that comes with that. If you're trying to do a bit of match-fixing, then trying to approach a PL player or team is expensive and dangerous, since they're already well-paid and their games are typically televised. Paying off a group of lads playing in the Finnish 3rd division to get the result you want is much easier and safer. Any teams anyone can think of that had a sudden massive collapse in form and looked determined to lose every game no matter the circumstances recently...?

Bloody hell I never realised that. Tbh it would be much easier to throw a match at that level. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

"Mentally [is he] strong enough to come back?" Absolutely! I'd bet my house on it! (Sorry). Anyhow, this is the guy who first came through with his local club, Northampton Town. Then caught the eye of Newcastle at the age of 19. Two senior appearances for them, then loans to Barnsley, Scunthorpe, Shrewsbury and Wigan, before being binned. (Benitez was Toon manager btw). Then went to Peterboro (Lge One) to rebuild his career, before signing for Brentford in the Championship. Thirty one goals in forty five games drove them to promotion, including a crucial Wembley Play -Off Final penalty just 10 minutes in. Twelve goals in 33 PL games in his first PL season, followed by 20 in 33 this season - most of which was with this ban hovering over his head. While his penalty record is outstanding - scoring 23 of 24 for Brentford, with the one he missed immediately rectified in the same game, when he stepped up for a second time - and scored! The guy has balls of brass, whatever else might drag him down, it won't be his temperament, I can guarantee you that.

Naughty boy Ivan Toney on 12:44 - May 26 with 2038 views | Paddyhoops | Listened to the details of his misdemeanours on the radio a few minutes ago. It’s not great listening from his point of view. Apparently passed information on lines ups to third parties among the rap sheet. Is there something thicker than a submarine door? I wonder would Southgate have been so forgiving in Barton’s case? Surely Barton’s situation consists of a gambling problem.
Naughty boy Ivan Toney on 13:22 - May 26 with 1953 views | Antti_Heinola | Baffling that the ban took so long to come into effect that it didn't harm Brentford's season, and equally that a huge portion will be served during pre-season. How about letting him train with the team, but the 8 month ban starts from August?

Naughty boy Ivan Toney on 14:11 - May 26 with 1816 views | OakR | I can't believe he's got such a short ban considering his bet against Brentford winning - that said was he playing in those games ie could directly affect them, or was he out injured or something, which whilst not brilliant is not quite as bad.
| |
Naughty boy Ivan Toney on 15:09 - May 26 with 1731 views | slmrstid | Not defending him but I wonder if actually betting on your own team to lose is almost like an insurance policy...much like fans do. Ie he hates being on the losing team so much that getting some money out of it would soften the blow. Still very stupid, obviously.
Naughty boy Ivan Toney on 15:58 - May 26 with 1671 views | sparkey | For fairness, Toney's 'betting against his own team' was when he bet against Newcastle when he was on loan at another club. Sensationalist media would make you think he was playing in all the games he bet in. 8 months is about fair in my opinion
Naughty boy Ivan Toney on 16:19 - May 26 with 1632 views | OldPedro | According to the BBC, his ban was reduced from 11 months although the FA originally wanted to make it 15 months: "Brentford striker Ivan Toney was given a reduced ban from football because of a diagnosed gambling addiction. Toney, 27, was banned for eight months for breaking Football Association betting rules - including betting against his own team. A psychiatry expert who gave evidence to the FA's regulatory commission diagnosed Toney with a gambling addiction and concluded he needed help. As a result, the commission reduced an 11-month sanction by three months. In its written reasons explaining its sanction, published on Friday, the commission said Toney had admitted repeatedly lying during his initial interviews with the FA. It added he had since ceased gambling on football, though not on other sports, and is "determined to address his gambling problem with therapy". The FA initially wanted to impose a 15-month ban on Toney because he attempted to conceal his betting, knowing it was against FA rules. This included betting through third parties and deleting relevant messages from his mobile phone, it said, then knowingly giving "clearly false answers" during his interviews with the FA. The commission did not uphold all of the FA's claims. His ban was reduced to 11 months given he pleaded guilty to all 232 charges before being further reduced to reflect his diagnosed addiction." https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/65721139 Given the number of offences and the lies, it should have been more than 8 months. I have no sympathy but the headlines saying he bet against his team was misleading as he was as you say playing for other clubs when placing bets.Him pleading for mercy as he is a gambling addict doesn’t cut with me as he’s lied all along in this investigation.Only loser is Brentford as we can’t cash in and move this idiot on. .

I thought that it said he bet on Wigan to lose while he was at Wigan although not in the team, so the headline is correct isn't it?
Naughty boy Ivan Toney on 20:21 - May 26 with 1314 views | Wilkinswatercarrier | Just spoke with a Brentford fan, he thinks they'll be fine without Toney, apparently they won 6 out of 8 games when he didn't play season just gone. I'm not so sure, I'd say he is their equivalent of Ferdinand for us back in the 90s. I think if they are near the bottom in January they could go. Toneys is not going to be match fit until March, and they could be in real trouble. FINGERS CROSSED!
