Shilton.

A couple of really great saves here, to be fair, but many of them camera saves.

A lot also look like good saves but would be simple saves for a taller keeper.
Always thought he was overrated and overhyped, especially compared to Parkes and Clemence (both of whom were better in the air, for instance)

Either way, he was The No. 1 Goalie In The World for twenty years, apparently.
Hard to believe that.

Someone said Zidane earlier in this thread?

Come the fk on. He was a sublime player, possibly my favourite ever, like a beefed-up Adel on Valium who did it week in week out for years and won World and European Cups.

Zidane was amazingly talented and played for the biggest two clubs in Europe when he was at his peak, but he epitomised Harlem Globetrotters football that emphasised star (and sponsors?) over team. Let's compare his achievements with "utter clogger" Sergio Ramos.
World Cups - ZZ 1/ SR 1
Euros - 1/2
Champions League - 1/4
Domestic Leagues - 3/6
Admittedly SR has 24 red cards to ZZ's 14, but Larry Lloyd won twice as many European Cups as the Great Zizou.

I can help you here. I think the clue is in the title: ‘Players You Thought Overrated’ not ‘Players You Thought Overrated That Antti Will Agree With’.

That said, I wonder if some are applying a twunt criterion to Shearer and Keane. Washed my hands of both when Shearer kicked some Leicester bloke in the head before the 98 WC, and sought to ‘avoid’ proper sanction and Keane before/during/after the 02 WC. Not sure which, as I’m not sure Keane went/stayed/left.

thanks for straightening that out! It would be pretty weird if we all agreed, but I was just commenting that I was surprised by some names being mentioned. I think that's ok isn't it? Totally agree with you about 'twunt criterion' - I was sort of alluding to that, but you put it better than me!

Bare bones.

The Twunt Criterion - one of Robert Ludlum's finest, but the film was a bit of a mess.

We’ll have to agree to disagree on this one MrSheen! My mancrush on Zidane will never die. Loved watching him as a player

Henderson as well for me.

I know he sometimes does some good things but I've never watched him and thought 'Top quality'.

Lee chapman was at an Iron Maiden afterparty at the 02 a few years ago (my mate knows Janick and I tagged along) so I'll give him kudos for that.

Peter Beardsley, great for Liverpool and Newcastle but I never warmed to him when watching England.
I was 18 when he got his last cap so maybe the young me didn't appreciate what he offered for England.

Beardsley probably made more goals for Lineker than any other player.

In 1986 England were drifting out of the world cup at the group stage, having 1 point from 2 games. Beardsley was then brought into the side replacing Hateley or Dixon, assisting for two of the goals.

IMO Beardsley & Lineker was the best attacking partnership that I have seen, but maybe they stayed in the England team too long.

Overrated England strikers? Geoff Astle. He wasn't even the best available at West Brom!

You can add good old Mark Hateley to that list too. How the hell was he ever a first choice striker for England??

Also significant in that World Cup was Wilkins getting sent off and Robson doing his shoulder against Morocco. This necessitated bringing in Reid and Hodge against Poland and also Waddle was dropped for Trevor Steven.

That midfield four wasn't functioning as a unit in the first two games but as soon as Wilkins and Robson weren't there it clicked into place with Hoddle playing centrally. This I think was as equally significant as Beardsley replacing Hateley who stunk the place out in the first two games.

Glad someone said Foden. Thought it was just me. I understand he must be better than most but I just don't get the hype. Now I've said that, he's nailed on to score 35 yd byclce kick against Argentina in the World Cup semi (which we'll lose on a VAR decision showing that, on reflection, Harry Maguire is, in fact, a pantomime horse)

Blimey, I think Foden is fantastic, love watching him play

The amazing thing is that prior to that World Cup, Hateley's record was pretty good, 9 goals in 18 games so him being one of the first choice front two alongside Lineker was not a surprise, limited footballer though he was.

That World Cup really exposed his limitations though and as soon as Beardsley took his chance, that was pretty much that as first choice although his international career somehow limped on for another couple of years and he was even brought back by Graham Taylor after four years for one game in 1992.

Always thought Wayne Rooney was overrated. Never turned in the performances for England in the Euros or World cups and to have him as the greatest goalscorer for England is a sham as most of them were against weak opposition.

I got absolute pelters for saying this on here a couple of years ago but you're absolutely correct.

Rooney was the epitome of a flat-track bully for England, happy to score bucketloads against rubbish teams in qualifying but failed miserably and repeatedly at every tournament bar his first Euros. I'd take every single other one of England's generational forwards during my lifetime - Lineker, Shearer, Kane - over him, despite Rooney being more naturally talented than any of them.

I think the same applies to his club form as well: one Champions League and no league titles post-Ferguson is massively underwhelming for someone spoken about as an all-time great. Compare him to Ronaldo, who was going deep into the Champions League and winning consecutive league titles with Juventus when Rooney was pissing about in the MLS or too fat to keep up with games in the Championship. He could and should have been so much better than he was.

Devil’s Advocate on Rooney….

Don’t all the top players (including those we don’t think were overrated) play exactly the same teams?

I know this is going to be controversial but Ronaldo CR7. Great goal scorer but always found him a bit boring and joyless to watch. Almost robot like particularly later in his career when it became all about scoring goals to break records.

And I mean overrated in the sense that he’s often referred to as the greatest player of all time. He’s no genius like Maradona, Pele, Cruyff, Messi etc. I’d have the original Ronaldo ahead of CR7.

I can respect his goal scoring record but I’ve always preferred footballers who have a bit more about them.

probably hasn't but also hasn't had a run in the side yet has been in and out a lot with injury. I thought we missed him in the final last year, he was very good off the bench in the semi, still think we'd have won if we could have brought him off the bench that night

As mentioned elsewhere I also don't understand the fuss about Mason Mount who is always average when he plays for England (and Southgate seems obsessed with him). Of course the Chelscum connection doesn't help either.

Van Dijk for me.

Only ever seen highlights and he's obviously no donkey, but best defender in the world and worth all that money - not for me!

I'll try and answer this one.

On the field - I thought he could pass short, long, head, score, tackle, read the game and had reasonable pace. the only thing he was bad at was dribbling. Had to look at his feet all the time! For all of those positive qualities I wouldn't have ranked him great at any one of them. What made him a great player - and I would class him as a great player - was his mental skills. He was ultra-consistent, ultra-competitive and he made everyone around him play quicker, play better, play harder. And he did it himself.

Off the field - a really sound fella. I have countless stories of good turns he's done for less fortunate locals around Cork, including one that needs to be told over a pint but which I find astonishing.

Having said all that, while I admire so much about him he's not my cup o' scald. I prefer my heroes to be more unassuming. And the tackle on Haaland and the subsequent explanation is hard to understand.

Brian, you’ve expressed EXACTLY what I was trying to say about him as a player.
As a slight aside he plays a small cameo in Young Offenders!
