Unfortunately when you install an app the default setting is to allow background data. If you want to restrict this then you'll need to spend time changing settings. Generally speaking, I tend to turn off notifications for apps I'm not interested in hearing from and setting most of the rest to provide updates only over Wi-Fi. Only the most critical apps have permission to use data in the background. The good news is that this not only restricts background data usage, it also significantly improves battery life. The bad news is every time your son downloads a new app, settings for that app need to be adjusted. If you can't be bothered with all this faff and your son is happy with his phone then there are plenty of decent SIM card only deals around. PAYG is ok for traditional phones but the plans don't tend to work well for smartphones. For youngsters I would recommend VOXI. It runs on the Vodafone network and there's no contract (so you can cancel at any time). Plans start from as little as £10 per month for 15GB of data plus unlimited calls and texts. There's also unlimited use of popular social apps like TikTok, Insta, Facebook, Twitter, etc. so using these apps doesn't come out of his data allowance. As a Brucie bonus, they also throw in free cinema tickets from time-to-time. You can monitor the account online and switch plans at any time to suit his usage. That's understandable but you'll pay a hell of a lot more for Vodafone direct and they won't throw in unlimited social or video streaming. It's the same for Virgin Mobile/O2, GiffGaff/O2, Lebara/Vodafone, Tesco/O2, etc. Personally neither my family nor I have experienced any such problems in 2 years of VOXI usage, and my reception was perfect last night. It's likely that your issue was a generic one rather than linked to traffic management. In any event my recommendation isn't necessarily right for you because it's tailored to the case in point. The person asking is a parent and the user is a young lad. Youngsters tend to communicate via socials and stream videos rather than making traditional phone calls. They will also spend a lot of time at home where apps will use Wi-Fi over mobile data. Parents are in the midst of a cost of living crisis and need to find ways to control other expenditure in order to afford energy. Whilst parents are typically driven to providing their child with a mobile phone for security reasons, the reality is that daily usage is likely to be watching the latest dance craze or listening to KSI/Yung Filly/Logan Paul, etc. Given the above, there is little incentive to pay for premium network services. Controlling costs is probably why the OP chose PAYG to begin with; if so cost remains a key factor even if the OP decides to switch to a monthly plan. | | | |

Agreed. However the broadband route may involve tying yourself to a contract (particularly if the SIM deal is packaged with the broadband service). It's important for the OP to note that SIM-only deals come in various guises. Some are no contract, some are 30 days, others are 12/18-month contracts. I prefer the flexibility of being contract-free but naturally it's up to you. The general advice for the OP is to go SIM-only. Far more practical and cost-effective for smartphones than PAYG.
