Ball has to find a role where his limitations aren’t exposed. His passing and awareness is not at the level needed for receiving the ball in his own half/middle of the park. If he plays, it has to be much closer to the forwards and arriving in the box.
A midfield addition is a priority, possibly two if we can look to move Kelly on.
His passing and awareness were fine when he first joined us, but as his confidence has dropped it makes him look slower than he is. He's a shadow of how he was at the start of the year, putting himself in the thick of the action and facing down the opposition enforcers

Graham Alexander.
He would struggle to create a connection with supporters. For all Stockdale’s faults, he has managed to have a fan base backing him to succeed even though there are obvious doubts. Alexander, from the outside, creates quite dour, functional sides that he then displays in interviews.
Can see why experience would be a preferred option, but would give McNulty a go if he can get someone in to assist. Of course, we hope it doesn’t reach that point and that today’s concern, whilst justified, is allayed quickly.

He did well initially, especially with early goals as he was involved far higher up the pitch. There was a definite lull in form along with the team’s - we only won twice when he played. The real upturn in form to take us clear of the relegation zone took place after he was injured.
There’s potential for him to be a useful player in the side, a proper goalscoring attacking midfielder. It’s finding a way to utilise him in that role because he’s stifled and not suited to balls played into him around the centre circle.

I'd take dour and functional football over the dour and disfunctional football that we've had over the few years now!

Aren't a lot on here crying out for a dour, functional side that does the basics right?

The fluctuation in form of the team and Ball's injury are only very superficially correlated, with so many other factors involved including Campbell and Charman emerging from their shells. I think you know that

Campbell got injured in the same game as Ball, Charman appeared the week after so that was a definitive change. It was more to illustrate that Ball’s impact early on was in the final third/the opposition penalty area and that we didn’t really benefit results or team performance wise. That’s his strength, one we need to find a way of utilising better. It fits with that ambition Stockdale had on arrival to get the ball into dangerous areas, if we did Ball would make an impact. As shown last week when he could have had a hat-trick arriving in the box.

No, I’m crying out for a team that does the dour functional things when they have to. Get the basics right & then you can express yourselves at the right end of the pitch.

But my point was primarily about the captaincy, and how it affects (or fails to affect) our performances
I don't think its coincidental that handing it to EEL has seen us starting on the wrong foot, with Ball perhaps more affected than others

Who in this squad apart from White and McNulty is an old has-been?
Too early to write him off, but Diagouraga hasn't impressed me yet. On at least 3 occasions in the first half yesterday he sloppily gave the ball straight to a Gills player and it should've cost us.
I hope it's not the case of someone who might have been a good signing 5-10 years ago.

I agree that he has looked a little error prone in these opening games, but he played an entire campaign in League One last season. A level below, albeit one year older, should not be beyond him. Perhaps he’s being given certain instructions that are restraining him or not letting him play his natural game? He’s certainly not ready for the scrap heap yet.

Sensing real frustration at the Charman injury he sounds to have got before coming on last week.
The best way I can describe that interview is that it just makes me feel sad.
Stockdale looks broken, bereft of ideas and clearly frustrated. The board making the decision to make a change now feels like it'd put him out of his misery as much as us.

Another away game, another piss poor performance lacking effort, desire and any kind of threat.
O’Donnell is the only player to come away with a shred of credit, just because he did his job with saves you’d expect him to make! A special mention for Ball, who is inexplicably being touted as captain material. He’s been shite since his first two games for us, but gets an easy ride because he interacts with fans. Play him further forward or don’t play him at all. He’s a liability in the middle of the park.
Sorry, but Stockdale got to go. I don’t care how trigger happy that seems. I like him, I think he talks well, but his words don’t translate on the pitch. Last season he had genuine excuses, even though we showed encouraging signs at the start of the season. From that point on we’ve seen regression, which has seamlessly carried on this season.

I think Robbie should ring Coleman At Accrington for advice. How has Coleman managed to keep them in a decent position in league 1 with small crowds like us? I doubt if they have unlimited funds coming in so where is he succeeding where we are failing?

They are only doing the same as what we did from 2013-2017 under Hill.
Chances are they will also struggle in coming years.

Three things:
1. Their budget will be higher than ours as they get at least £1m more for being in League One. That was the biggest kick in the teeth for us when BBM didn't care where we were in the table
2. Colman is a wise old fool. He knows how to fight and how to find a kid with talent
3. I doubt they won the fair play league in the division last season like we did. We just don't challenge for the ball enough

He's being "touted as captain material" since he was lauded as captain at Solihull as they rose to challenge for promotion into the football league, a real driving force. That's the basis on which he was brought into the club, but simply isn't being utilised correctly. Look at Hendo, in his first couple of games. Anyone not understanding his history as a player and captain would wonder what the heck we'd signed...
Think I’m teaching the Eyre-esque point with Stockdale where I’m not even looking forward to any new signing he makes as I think we’ll either a) have had the wool pulled over our eyes by their agent (see White) or b) not be able to get the most out of them (see Hendo)

Was he really lauded as captain at Solihull? Their captain, Kyle Storer, probably got more adulation as captain.
Not that it matters. He’s been mostly shite for us, for whatever reason, which isn’t a case for making him captain.

Tbh, we haven't had a proper captain, in the true sense of that role, since Jones.

Incoming by Bingoballs31 Jan 2022 22:04 RS just said don't go to bed yet, still time for another one yet.
Post at 8.51, 1 Feb, describes him wearing the captain's armband in a photo, so i can only go off what's been described. There's also plenty of info coming from the Solihull fans at the time about being gutted to lose him
Has he been "shite" for us? The simple fact is that like others, he's struggling to do what's being asked of him. I'd still "tout" him as captain in place of EEL, who i rate as a CB but needed time to settle back into the club

He looked good in the first couple of games after signing. Other than that he’s been shite, but hasn’t come in for criticism because the fanbase are desperate for him to be the cult hero that we’ve been missing for years. He seems a likeable guy and uses social media well.
As said elsewhere, playing in a standard central midfield position exposes his flaws. Play him further forward or don’t play him at all.

I just wouldn't call a player "shite" for being asked to do something that you acknowledge isn't his role
