Let's be fair, most older comedies have something questionable. If it starts gathering pace and more series get stopped or banned then we will be opening ourselves up for further protests about other beliefs and faiths.
It looks like the history of British sitcoms/series could be lost forever if things continue as they are.
Pretty soon we won't be allowed to laugh at anything. We won't be allowed to label anything either. We've lost context, irony, humour is destined for the dustbin too.
I wonder if it's still OK to call Welsh people sheepsha$$ers?
we dont know mun, we dont know what its like to have racist comments aimed at us!
as if PS DOWNLOAD THEM CARRY ON FILMS, THEY"LL BE NEXT

if people can't watch it now in context of the era it was made then in my opinion thats a slight on the people who are offended rather than the makers and producers in the time it was made
The world was different and it constantly evolves for the better but you can't just delete the past

This is Patches O'Houlihan saying "Take care of your balls, and they'll take care of you."
The version shown on BBC and Netflix was cut ages ago (with John Cleese’s approval).
The version shown on Gold (or whatever the channel is called) is shown in full. They’ve pulled it temporarily to make the same cut as the other services have.
It’s nothing to do with Germans despite what the right wing press and many morons on social media seem to believe.
Whether the scene should have been cut in the first place, who knows. On one hand we’re supposed to recoil at the Major, but the reality is that Cleese made him an slightly endearing old buffer rather than an object of derision, so it’s not a clear cut as some make out. The language used shouldn’t cause a reaction of ‘old fool’ with a wry smile, but should cause contempt. And it doesn’t. Which is because it’s a product of its time where ‘old fool’ was the sort of reaction that was acceptable and that’s the way it was written.
I watched a couple recently and thought it seemed old fashioned, not very funny and I didn’t think it had stood the test of time. Many still love them of course. Other comedies of the same era have stood the test of time a lot better in my opinion.
Anyway - it’ll be back on with the edit that other channels have made.
My Mrs made a sarky comment about me going grey the other day. Must be an organisation I can complain too. Deeply offended and is surely a greyist remark.
Apparently that's because the original, unedited version is full of the N word.
Not just 'N' but 'W" too. The scene is based on the Major and Basil discussing the WI and Indian cricket teams. As I said, I was quite surprised this version was still around even if the intent was to belittle racism.

Yeah. And it is about this specific original version. From what I've seen the intention is to replace it with the edited version. Which itself has been in circulation for a number of years.

I don't really see the problem in this case.
Coming soon to a bookshop near you - Lola by Nabokov, a man’s obsession with a 21 year old woman.

He’s definitely an object of derision. He’s portrayed as senile, thick as shit, always drunk. He’s roaming the hotel with a shotgun in one episode ffs.
Every time he appears someone makes some sort of contemptuous remark.
He’s a deliberate anachronism.
The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

Disagree.
Anyway, the fact that so many think it’s about the German reference is because they haven’t shown the unedited version on most channels for years. Without anyone batting an eyelid.

As you say nothing to do with the German reference. The clip in question is on YouTube though
With everything that's going down, this is exactly the type of 'cutting edge' journalism the country needs too read. Taken from a few tvvats on facebook or whatever. What a load of shit!
This x1000.
As proven by this thread, very few people are likely to be offended by these shows, no matter what side of the political divide they're on. It's a shame the tabloids spend their efforts on 'stories' like this rather than actually writing real stories. Still, bread and circuses and all that.
You know, Hobbes, some days even my lucky rocket ship underpants don't help.
I know, but much like Alf Garnett, people don’t get the irony. I could see the offence people may take
I’m less convinced about Alf Garnett being intended as a commentary om the stupidity of racism and racist attitudes given that it was written by the same bloke who came up with Curry and Chips. In Sickness and in Health especially always struck me as cheap laughs based on attitudes that were outdated even then. Its predecessor, Til Death us do Part, was far more subtle and had a counterpoint to Alf’s bigotry in Tony Booth’s character. By the time it was revived in the 80s it was basically crap and unpleasant.
