Good summary. We need to find some new batting talent that can deliver at this level, Cook's absence still being felt, as much as Anderson's was in this series. Also a chance to shake up the coaching staff now and selectors.

England have had a "never won the World Cup" monkey on our backs, and the focus has been on ridding ourselves of it. Now that we have, we can move on to concentrate much more on what needs to be done to become more successful at test level

Perhaps it was too much of an ask in one summer, but with the right changes and leadership we can start that process, right now

Absolutely. Everything from 2009 was geared towards becoming the best Test team in the world and it worked. Then the four-year focus was on on winning the 50-over World Cup this year. It worked. Now is the time to get these things ticking in tandem, not one at the expense of the other. The Aussies seem to manage it, even when they’re alleged to have a poor side.

Not marginalising the County Championship would be a good start for the long form of the game.

Which is why the 'Hundred' is going to be a real pain next season

Our test team has too many one dayers posing as test match cricketers, need a serious reshuffle in the batting department.

Could do with finding a couple of handy openers knocking about somewhere..

Leader of the little gang of immature cretins.

It's hard finding batsmen at any level of cricket at the moment. There just isn't that focus from up and coming cricketers to get to be a top batsman.

Not sure about the unchanged squad. Seems an ideal opportunity to try a few new faces with the thought of building for the future.

This.
We showed in the last innings yesterday that there is plenty of resolve in there. Headingley showed resolve. We're not that far off.
Now the World Cup has been won, it's time to concentrate on tests again. I would take some of the newer members of this squad overseas for the New Zealand and South African series to gain test match experience. Over the past few years , the selectors haven't got much wrong in their judgments once the new players they pick grow into test cricket. I trust their judgment still.
Of course it's devastating that the convicts kept the Ashes, but without the best batsman (convicted cheat) in the world in the form of his life, I doubt they would have.
The hundred thing is nonsense. Does anybody really want it apart from the beancounters? An absolute waste of time IMHO.
Keep the faith.

Denly has looked determined to give his wicket away since he came to the crease. Occasional good knocks aside, these openers do not inspire confidence.

I think Burns deserves a little credit, he seems to have a more of a brain than most of the England players.
His wicket in the 2nd innings at OT was just an absolute peach of a ball.

Hoping for a good partnership between him and Root now.

Wish I'd chosen a different username...

I credit Burns in that he’s enjoyed the benefit of being the consistent opener of the series and has grafted and showed patience in equal measure but you still don’t get the feeling he’s going to hang around.

Root has come in when the ball is still new far too often and it’s had a knock-on effect.

As you say, hopefully they can put on a bit of a stand here now.

Well we’ve had the luck, for once, this morning (Root especially) and the session definitely belongs to us. You can’t help but feel the Aussie’s have lost a shade of ruthlessness having already retained the Ashes.

That won’t last for long, and so it sets up an interesting afternoon. I reckon they’ll come out firing.

I think Burns has taken his chance and is worth sticking with. There are not many better seam attacks than the Aussies and with Steyn retiring, Philander on the wane an/or often injured the South African pace bowling stocks are not as impressive as in previous years.

For me it is who steps up for the other opening slot and what happens with the rest of the top seven. Bairstow has been out of knick for most of the last two years when I think he averages low 20s and Buttler has one test ton in quite a few appearances. Is it time for them to focus on white ball cricket and bring Foakes and Pope into the team?

Maybe a line up like this for the New Zealand leg of the winter tours?

1. Burns
2. Sibley
3. ? Any suggestions?
4. Root
5. Stokes
6. Pope
7. Foakes
8. Curran/Woakes
9. Archer
10. Broad
11. Leach

Number three is really difficult. Most of the younger players such as Pope. Hain etc usually bat at 4/5/6. There is only really Vince who is a 3, but he has been found wanting. Unless we played in effect three openers and had Crawley/Sibley at 2/3? If fit the likes of Stone and Wood may come into consideration for selection for the South Africa tour.

I am not entirely convinced by Leach's wicket taking prowess but again there are not many spinners standing out. Bess would be a better batting/fielding option but he doesn't get much bowling in 4 day cricket.

We could give No.3 to Bohannon ;)

Sibley is definitely worthy of a chance as an opener. There are three tours coming up that will give us chance to experiment, but we’re not blessed with options from what I can see.

Another issue is the Anderson one. If he can’t continue with any consistency of fitness, that suggested lineup worries me. Other than Broad (and eventually Archer), there isn’t anything too frightening there.

The spin issue is a valid one. I would like to see how Parkinson gets on at a higher level next season, but I feel he could be a genuine future leg-spin option for England.

Fair play to Josh, an excellent innings considering the conditions and his previous lack of pedigre!.

There are a number of up and coming seamers about such as Stone, Mahmood, Overton.J, Helm and Tongue who are quick and those such as Porter, Bailey who are less than quick. Unfortunately the quicker bowlers have had issues with injuries and/or are a bit raw.

I like Parkinson and half expect him to be challenging for selection in white ball cricket or see action in Franchise cricket in one of the T20 leagues over the winter. As with a lot of young spinner he has not seen much red ball action. The fact he is not a great batter might also go against him in the longer format of the game as teams like to avoid a long tail.

True about Parkinson’s batting, as he just demonstrated for Lancashire 😃

Openers both out
Saffer and Smiffer both in

All just a little bit of history repeating.

ps. Warner did not look like he hit it, no matter what snicko said.

Curran has a knack of impacting games. He is not the quickest but gets the ball to around and his different angle helps add variety to the attack.

Aussies 187-8 and Smith out for 80. That’s 2 sub 100 scores on the trot (80 and 82)so looks like he is on the wain😃
