£10 minimum wage 16:22 - Jun 7 with 14355 viewspremierjack

Sorry if this has been posted on here before.

I'm not great on these political issues so thought I would ask you lot because I would like to use my vote so....

If labour put the minimum wage up to £10 an hour, wouldnt shops, businesses etc just put their prices up so the people earning more than £10 per hour at the moment be worse off? Also wouldn't it deskill some jobs that need qualifications and good education? For example, if someone was on £11 per hr, it may be worth quitting and doing a less stressful, less challenging job for only £1 an hour less?

He's a tax cheat then, as I imagine most small business are. Theres also the case of large cash transactions that don't go through the business accounts. It's wrong, but it happens. This is why I get annoyed when I see these business owners moaning about corporate tax increases or minimum wage increases.

Cash in hand tends to be more microbusinesses - your plumbers etc. The "It'll cost you £40, guv for cash" type things. That usually seems to be acceptable tax evasion to some...

Most small businesses aren't tax cheats. That's a slur on hardworking people... HMRC have tightened up dramatically what can and cannot be claimed for. No way, repeat no way would he have got away with a clothing claim... nor a holiday claim... if he did claim them, then report him. Simple as that.

They pay around £8 an hour Gar. That's a 20% increase in wage expenditure straight away before the increased tax comes into play. They do have a business that demands manual work, doesn't mean they won't streamline staff though. Wouldnt be surprised if they expect more productivity out of the people who stay, especially as they would have had a 20% pay rise.

I don't give a shit about Amazon. I would give a shit about young people finding it harder to get work. I'm assuming there is some sort of tax relief or incentive for smaller businesses? If not I'd feel for them too.

We are talking about raising the minimum wage for a 40 hour week to nearly £21k. I know people who earn far less that and manage fine. They would be fecked if they were out of work though.

After 2 years service, Amazon pay £8.65. They also pay 5% on top of that each week into your pension. I know because i work for them. They also paid for my knee replacement op when i stayed in Sancta Maria for 5 nights, and my wages for the seven months i was off work were covered by the insurance they provide free of charge. On top of that, last month i sold this years 3 shares to cover my holidays (currently $1,005 per share). I'll also say that i do very little for that, and that's about the maximum they will get out of me!

However, i'm actually with Lord_Bony on this one. It would be pretty pointless raising the minimum wage as the large corporate companies (energy etc) will want a bigger cut of your money too maximise their profits even further. Until that is brought under control then the minimum wage may as well be £100 per hour, it would make little difference.

Mate I get your point that the extra £1.35 an hour isn't going to make much difference to you. My concern is they (large companies in general, not specifically Amazon, they are just a good example) would react by cutting jobs. You've then got a pool of people all desperate for work, but no one will employ them at £10 an hour. They are then clamming jsa etc whereas at the moment they are paying tax and ni.

I won't be voting for labour, mainly because from my extremely limited politics knowledge, Corbyn comes across as a buy now pay later, Robin Hood style fantasist.

£10 @ 37 hours per week is £19,200 per year gross.
Not much when you take tax and insurance etc out.
Then the poor buggers have to pay £600~£800 a month rent. Plus council tax, water rates, leccy, gas etc.
Car, fuel, insurance ~ doubt they can afford this.
I can't imagine there would be anything left.
No wonder there are food banks.
They are now on even less, whatever might minimum wage is?

Isn't it £7.50 now?
What's that, £14,625 a year? Who the f*ck could live on that bar Ian Duncan Smith????

I'm sure that Blue and Rockin would be able to as well , seeing as they are such enthusiasts.

As it has been said already on here, low wages economy = low skills and productivity, a stagnant economy due to no disposable income and the in work benefits system and food banks.

I think we all agree a lot of people should be better off,but who should be responsible for that?

Basically, the government says employers should.

Employers say the government should take responsibility.

There has to be a more fairer system in place to work among all parties across the board.

The thing that really winds me up is self employed people in cash businesses declaring ridiculously low incomes then sodding of to Antigua for 3 weeks. Some of them even have the front to claim working tax credits.

I know it's probably small potatoes in the wider scheme of things and is impossible to regulate. Still annoys me though.

You just don't get it, do you? Far too blinkered by your ideology.

I would rather be on 15k a year with a job than on the dole which is what will be the consequence of it going too high.

If you're young and single 15k is absolutely fine, shared house. Money to party, money to eat and money to save.

But carry on with your moral superiority crap

I said *tend to*. Try reading. Microbusinesses in particular trades tend to deal with cash far more than other businesses. Those trades tend to have higher levels of tax abuses than others due to the "cash in hand" nature of the work.

Any privately owned business dealing with cash transactions will be the same and you're deluded if you think otherwise. If for example you own a hardware store and a bloke comes in and buys a £1000 of materials with cash, you're not putting it all through the books. If you own a bar/restaurant and business owner comes in with associates and puts £5k behind the bar for everyone, again, that's not all going through the books. They cook the books whether you like it or not. You and I would do the same no doubt.

Which was what I said before.

HMRC really tightened up on things; most legislation brought in was due to abuses within the construction industry too.

If you run a legitimate business, then there will be legitimate expenses. Don't think anyone with a brain cell would complain about those. The days of buying a £6k plasma TV for personal use and claiming it as being a legit business expense are over - any investigation would nail that.

It was years ago...

Guy was an idiot anyway - advised him the wonderful scheme a company had offered him where he could keep 90% of company income was way too good to be true. Didn't listen. When that scheme was deemed illegal he got hit hard - including retrospective penalties. Caused him to go bankrupt...

There's zero point in responding to you.

You have not taken on any points I've said.

If you're 49 with a family and kids of course it's not a great salary to live on, I just said it's fine if you're young and single. In my first post I made the economic case for not increasing it TOO HIGH,

You live in some fantasy world where all businesses can pay you 25k plus - get real. People get higher salaries for being highly skilled, experience, qualifications etc. You don't get high pay because you wish for high pay. It doesn't work like that, good grief what would be the point in trying to better yourself.

It's high for a small business to absorb, multinationals can easily do it but someone struggling to turnover a profit not so easy.

I'm just questioning this sort of virtue signalling nonsense. If you've been very productive and you've added value to a business then of course you should get a pay rise but not out of some sense of entitlement because it's 'not fair' - define fair. We are very decadent society.

Next week I'm paying someone to do some work on my house and in my garden. He'll be getting cash because I don't have a cheque book and I doubt he has access to portable electronic payment facilities. I'm assuming it will be declared but if it's not, that doesn't mean I'm complicit or condoning tax evasion.
