I've only seen him on FLS show highlights but he never seems to be involved in anything positive, just running about and seemingly off the pace. Sad to say, but glad he's not a Dale player this season.
For Dale? I'm not sure there would be anyone really who would be good enough to attain legend status. Hence them playing at Rochdale.
I mean if we are looking at quality, then in my time *watching then I would place Grant Holt as being up there in terms of totally unplayable (from the opposition's perspective) up front, I'll have to think about the others...
* I've not seen games regularly since moving away 8/9 years ago.
But by definition, a Rochdale 'Legend' will be a different calibre of player to, say, a Man United 'Legend'.
Holt is definitely a legend and in my opinion, so is Jones.
And Sako.
When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

What about Donnelly?
He was a different calibre of player too.
Nobody will ever forget Georgie, unlike other strikers who are forgotten about eg: Neil Edmonds who averaged around 1 in 5 in a dreadful side for example.

Its a BRILLIANT goal to cap a BRILLIANT start by Rochdale - Don Goodman 26/08/10

Even Allatt had a better average!!
Many Legends I can think of R17 - many of them for being woeful or doing stupid things :)
GD is up there with the great legends such as Sutton, Dickens, Mark Bailey etc - could probably name 100 of them.
Ironically was thinking today who our worst ever signing was form that era - Would say it was Richard Green or Paul Williams - Cannot make my mind up :()

Big Willow without doubt was the most disastrous signing made in the history of the club.
Sutton 'sold' him to the Board of that era, who bought the pitch and sanctioned wages that even today would be considered generous for a Rochdale player. We got 7 goals for a six figure sum, around £15,000 per goal.
Other than Diaz, I can't think of a player who cost us more per goal.
I don't know the exact figures, but I'd wager Jones was about £500 per goal, when you factor in we got £175,000 for him from Barnsley in 2001ish.

I was doing Work Expirience at Heywood Sports when Dale were training there - If I remember it was just before we played Preston (pretty sure it was the FA Cup) and Sutton was running around like a nutter trying to get Williams signed in time to play in the game - as usual he failed if I remember rightly.
I used to get away with watching the training on the Astroturf and tbh a lot of the players and Sutton himself were very friendly and chatted to them a lot - Andy Howard, Steve Mulrain, Jamie Taylor were really good guys as were very grounded. The only clear Bell-End out of them all was Trevor Snowden - who was not particularly popular with the players for some reason, and spent a lot of time trying to do tricks and the like when he should have been doing simple stuff.
Any truth in the rumour Mick Docherty told Sutton not to sign Williams because he was trouble R17?

Are you thinking of the Preston league game in October 1993, when Tony Ellis scored twice for them in a 2-1 defeat?
Williams signed on loan a fortnight later and made his debut at Crewe, scoring in another 2-1 defeat.

How can the record appearance holder of a club, not be a legend? and to say he wasn't that talented is far off the mark also. I think people forget the season after wembley where we couldn't win a game without him when he got injured. He gave his everything for the team and is definitley in my top 10 dale players.

There are some on here who think that their opinion is fact no matter how absurd their opinion is, as is the case here regarding Jones.
Jones statistics as a true ROCHDALE AFC LEGEND are:
league only
1998 → Rochdale (loan) 4 (0)
1998—2001 Rochdale 138 (22 goals)
2003 → Rochdale (loan) 10 (2 goals)
2004—2012 Rochdale 325 (50 goals}
total appearances 478 Goals scored 74
Jones also commanded a fee of around 250 thousand pounds when joining championship side Barnsley. I'm not sure what his overall stats are? ie cup games but, not that it's relevant to his status at Dale, Jones is also a Legend at Bradford City captaining them to promotion and wembley Finals, semi finals etc. Gary Jones will never be forgotten in Bradford and rightly so.
It might be hard being a cowboy in Rochdale? It seems its bloody impossible to be a legend.

Lee Hodges must factor in there somewhere as well Razzle.
Gary Jones is a Rochdale Legend to me. If he is not to others no worries, for legends should be personal and rare, which for me Gary Jones is in a Dale shirt.
One of the most bang average midfielders - talent wise - I've ever seen play for Barnsley. But a proper grafter, and seemed a genuine bloke off the pitch. Will always remember his 35 yard missile at Fratton Park that rattled the bar, one of the most vicious strikes I've ever seen, they probably heard the noise in Southampton. Same game he was absolutely terrorized by the best player I've ever seen play against my club - Robert Prosinecki. And I've been lucky enough to see Bergkamp, Zola, Scholes, Kilnsmann and Earl Barrett (LOL) against us. But aye, Prosinecki was just unplayable. Couldn't get near him. Like a consistent Paddy McCourt on a good day. He scored a hat-trick, and I was genuinely gutted at full time that I had to stop watching a genius at work. Even though we'd equalized in injury time and drew 4-4. Same genius had already left me in awe earlier in the season when he ruled the show with Pompey beating us 4-1.
Gary Jones was bang average for us. Not as bad as some will tell you though. Typical lower league star but not enough talent to perform higher up the pyramid. Whereas, and I hate saying this, Stephen Dawson had far more talent for us, and was a better player for BFC in the second tier. I'd take him over Jones even in their respective pomps.
Not sure how his Barnsley status adds anything to a debate on his rochdale legend status...
When we were bad he was a shining light and our driving force in midfield.
When we were worse than bad he did the same demanding average players played above average.
Heartbeat of the the team.. Record appearances in a Dale shirt.. Chipped in with important goals.
Of course he was limited ( ability ) but boy am I glad we had him all those years.

I think he had already played vs Crewe and was trying to sign him to play in FA cup but I could be wrong - as its 22 years ago give or take. Got a feeling Sutton just missed the deadline to get him registered to play in FA Cup. Not sure who we played that season but it may even have been trying to sign him permenantly.
Memory not what it was :)

I don't think anyone is stating their opinion as fact, actually.
I haven't debated his legend status, because for me he is one. That doesn't mean I think he's a great player. A shining light when we were poor has been mentioned a few times. I've been lucky in that I only started watching us in Parkin's second spell, so the only one truly poor season I've ever witnessed was under Eyre. Jones was certainly no shining light in that season. In fact, I don't think there were any. His passion is undeniable, but for me Stephen Dawson provides all that passion with twice the ability.
I'm really not trying to hate on Jones, I just don't think his appearance record should guarantee him a place among our best ever players, because for me he simply isn't one.

Jonah first time round stood out more. Couldn't say he was better then, but he had better players around him second time around so he didn't shine to the extent he did before. First time round, he was talsmanic in how he played, and his departure to Barnsley cost us more than Parkin's departure did - had he stayed, I'm convinced we'd have gone up automatically. For me, he was the best midfielder I'd seen for the club. Then we signed David Perkins.
Anyways, agree you don't have to be the best ever to be a legend. Lyndon Simmonds will always mean more to me than Rickie Lambert does, yet ability wise there's no comparison.
"Number 1 is Gary Jones, number 2 is Gary Jones. ..." etc etc. Of course he's a bloody legend. I think some people on here just have contrary opinions to wind other people up and to provoke UNNECESSARY conflict. We can all debate his level of skill and limitations, which he undoubtedly had, but he will always be in my all time Dale 11. As Captain.
Are we using songs now to substantiate our opinions? (and let's REMEMBER that these are ONLY that):
His feet are attached to his pincers, He runs side to side & not to and fro, He's Rochdale's midfield general, Who's passes go straight back to Evo.
In your song, you'd have a team consisting of one player who is captain!
"For Dale? I'm not sure there would be anyone really who would be good enough to attain legend status. Hence them playing at Rochdale."
Erm, I would imagine that playing for Dale would have to be a definite condition for them to be a Dale legend! ...............if not can I pick Lionel Messi?
Erm, you've not really read it properly have you?
To be a legend there has to be some criteria fulfilled and for footballers that would be along the lines of being very good/exceptional at playing football at that level. Or shyte as well pointed out by R17.
Therefore, any Rochdale players who were that good would either move, or be moved on pretty sharpish before they could be around long enough to become a "legend".
If Lionel Messy played for Dale when he was a top player then yes, you may pick him, but he didn't, and we're talking about Gary Jones, who I think was an average player.
If you don't like that then fine, but don't try and jump in when you can't even understand the words.
Further to my original post, I know he was a Dale legend, I don't dispute that, just pointing out that he looks totally off the pace this season and it may be time to retire from playing.

he's probably gone on a couple of years longer than anyone could have expected - especially at this level. There's not many central midfielders have 18 year careers these days. Assuming he does retire, wonder whether Hilly will get him to earn his coaching badges at Spotland? Dunno if the budget will stretch to another coach but from Jonah's point of view, there's no one better to learn from.

Not really. You can attain legendary status by more than just being a great player or spending 10 years at a club. Great moments make legends too. Like Ben Muirheads penalty or Chris O'Grady's goal which confirmed our 1st promotion in over 40 years. Both players attained Rochdale Legend status with just those 2 goals. Get it?

I'm afraid I don't get it...
Murihead's penalty?!?! Next thing you'll be telling me the gate attendant who ushered you to gate 3 efficiently is a legend, or the pie server who gets just the right amount of peas in your tray is a legend!

Have to agree. Although the momentous feeling as that penalty went in will be legend amongst those of us there the rest of our lives. Ask those that know of our promotion but were too young to be there if they've heard of him. Then ask if they've heard of Reg Jenkins, a true legend I never saw play.
YOU do not have the right to give someone else permission to tell me what I can and can't do.
