Around 6 seconds before the scousers 2nd goal last night, Williams had the ball, turned to again pass it backwards to Fabianski. Why??
He had at least another 2 options. One of them being....putting his foot on the ball and turning towards the oppositions goal! There was no one behind him!!

I agree totally, with Sterling and Lallana's speed it was obvious that they were putting Fab under added pressure by passing back all the time.
It was so predictable and dangerous.

I can't blame Ash too much for that one. As I said in another post, the replay from behind the goal showed this was an error of judgement by Fab.
He had enough time to launch it straight back down the field, but he tried to be cute and chip it square to a Swans defender to keep possession. Unfortunately, he was a split second late, and we know the result.

Going backwards as a first resort is something we saw a lot of under Rodgers, died out (for a while at least) under Laudrup and has made a comeback with a vengeance this season.
There will always be a time and a place for sensible ball retention, but we do do it too often when there are better options available. It is frustrating to watch players get the ball in open space and turn backwards almost as a reflex action. Taylor is particularly good at it. |  |

If we as supporters can see where the next pass is going then the opposition will have a field day!
Robotic is the term that I use for most players these days, and Williams backpass last night when there were easier more intelligent options available backs that up.
As for Jazz, Taylor and Dyer their first instinct when getting the ball is to go back.

Very true.At one point last night Routledge I think it was or Fernandez, maybe, made a 60 yard back pass to Fabianski when there were options ahead.The whole ground laughed and jeered and so did the commentators.
This is Monk reverting or trying to revert to the style we were well known for and you can't blame him for that because it's what we all (fans) wanted again as it's brought us success and a unique identity right throughout football.Going backwards was fine before and still can be because it retains possession, which is what we're all about, or used to be under Martinez, Rodgers and Laudrup for a while before he decided to change things round.Back then we could knock it back to Vorm or Dorus and then comfortable and confident enough in possession to just play around at the back with it and just keep hold of the ball and in the meantime pulling the opposition all out of shape.Then 20 passes later we'd spot a gap and go for it.That's what we were and hoped for again under Monk.
So why does it seem we're miles away from achieving this with arguably better players at our disposal? We've got the man who knows us and our ethos better than anyone pulling the strings for us yet we're light years away from looking like the side that won in Valencia and at the Emirates.Could it be that we're now seen as a really good and respected side and other teams know they will have to be at their very best to compete with us and to compete with us all you seem to have to do is harass us when we're in possession and do what we do, or used to and just keep the ball for as long as possible or until an opportunity arose?Liverpool last night were like we used to be or as close to as I've seen.I suppose you'd expect it considering who their manager is. I've said it before, but he's trying to emulate the way we played in our first season up under Brendan, which is a perfectly natural thing for a rookie manager to do. Go with a system that you believe to be proven.
Problem is we've got better players now and it's frustrating to see them be so unnecessarily cautious. One of the reasons Montero has been such a breath of fresh air lately is that he seems to be the only one not interested in doing it. | |

What is wrong with running at defenders? The art of tackling by defenders is long since died, and they have no clue how to handle it.
Montero being a prime example here, and we all rave about him, but what he does is nothing new.

Most are too scared to say on here that we need an upgrade on Leon.It's ok to say we need a good new DM but you can't say Leon isn't good enough nowadays at this level if we want to further ourselves.

Taylor frustrates the hell out of me,. Time and again he doesn't see options that are there and ends up putting Ash under pressure by passing back - last nights second goal was a good example !!! Rodgers had him sussed - everytime he got the ball Liverpool players covered his back passes !
Jazz on the other hand does try to find other options but unfortunately isn't sharp enough and ends up losing the ball . . . . .
Why doesn't Dyer use his pace to go past defenders ? He's developed the annoying habit of getting the best of the defender only to stop and wait for support ! | | | |

I thought Leon was one of our better players last night, always making himself available for a pass, looking to give the man in possession an option,hardly ever gave the ball away, why Monk subbed him instead of the liability that is Shelvey god only knows ??? | | | |

He just doesn't have the attacking capability. Never has. He's a decent defensive fullback, but fullbacks need to provide more than just defending these days.
For all the misplaced stick Ben Davies took from some quarters last season we've definitely lost something with him no longer available to us, and we need to get it back. | |
