all the footballing qualities and mental strength in abundance i would have thought to play an essential role in a promoted teams survival this season.

Would have definitely kept him. As back up for Isla, which we ned, but also in case we are relegated. If we go back down we won't be taking the option to sign Isla and would then still have a proven RB at that level in Simpson who I am sure would have been happy to stay for realistic wages.
Seems like a good guy around the dressing room too....

The confusing bit for me is that I can understand selling him if we are playing 3 at the back plus wing backs. that isnt Danny's position, and he looked a little lost in the first couple of games as a result.
But we accept a bid and sell him the week we decide to go back to a flat back 4 which is his strength. Even if Isla is first choice, having him as back up would be essential. defgnders pick up suspensions, and injuries are a possibilty.
The only thing we dont know for certain is whether Danny was happy to be back up. We're all criticisng the likes of SWP, Borini and Cleverley for not moving to get first team action but instead are happy to sit on the bench collecting pay cheques. It sounds more like Redknapp told him he wasn't wanted so he left. If I'd had a pretty decent year at work, and my manager called me into the office to say "Yeah, rival company wants you, I don't really mind if you stay or go" I would be off like a bullet
I don't understand this sale either. I liked Simpson, I thought he'd played well for us, although was criticised for crossing (fair enough, OK, he was not the perfect right back, but no-one ever expected him to be). Furthermore when you look at our 25 man squad Simpson's absence is stark, as (Harriman aside) we only have Isla and Onuoha who would play right back neither of whom are specialists in that position. Yes I know we were going to play 3-5-2 but I would have thought would want to retain some flexibility by employing a right back in case.
I think something happened that we perhaps do not know about. Did he throw his toys out of the pram when we signed Isla? Did he react badly saying he didn't want to fight for the spot? Did he become 'not the right sort'? Did he think there would be no role for him in a 3-5-2? Did someone at the club treat him shabbily? Harry went off on one after the Burton debacle talking about bad apples whom he wanted rid of, perhaps he referred to Simpson? We don't know, any of this and so we don't know if it was a mistake to sell him. We just know he left in a hurry. There are two sides to every story, we haven't really heard either of them. Even the article in WLS is remarkably thin.
It does have a bit of "wrong sort" about it not to keep him as part of the squad (ahead of SWP effectively). It was him arrested over the stolen phone in Manchester while he was off work with a broken back, wasn't it?

Simpson reminded me of Don Shanks, who gave his all, but lacked that bit of quality.
Also doesn't he have a court case coming up for " Allegedly " attacking someone with a Hammer ?

I like Simpson - think he is a good bloke but not without his issues especially about women. I totally respect the fact that he wants to play football and not sit on the bench picking up his pay cheque like a lot of players do at the moment. Think this is one of the reasons a lot of people have taken a shine to him, always gave his best as well in every game.
Having said all that unfortunately Danny is limited in his ability. We have to stop thinking about what if we get relegated and think more about being a long term Premiership team. It was clear on saturday that Isla is a much better player than Danny and that is the benchmark we have to set ourselves for the future. What I like about this transfer window is the fact we have replaced some of our players with others that are so much better. We have to continue to do this or we will go backwards.
Interesting that a lot of other teams in this league have done the same - all have tried to strengthen their squads which will make it harder for us. I think we have enough about us now to stay up only because there are worse teams in the league than us but we still have to work hard and have a bit of luck - especially around injury's to key players.

Completely agree. Bit gutted he left,especially to a rival. A consistent player last season.

Yeah that's how I see it too. Shanks is a good comparison but nobody offered us £2m for Shanks or whatever the equivalent amount was. If they had have done Gregory would have taken it too.

Who knows what went on. Could be that he wanted assurance of first team starting which we couldn't give.

Gregory would indeed have taken £2m but £1m of it would have been in a carrier bag.
i can understand remy: the only way to beat that was to outbid on his wages, including whatever premium he'd place on the likelihood of being included in a trophy-winning team.
but there was no decent excuse for getting rid off such a reasonable defender.
tony's not like t&c making warnock sell heidar for a zero-sum window. unnecessary.
To let him go at all was a mistake, but to let him go for 2 mil. to our direct rivals Leicester was madness. Its clear we wont be playing 3-5-2 very often and he is a youngish, solid defender with pace I really can't see why we didn't want to keep him. Its nailed on he will play a cross for the winning goal against us when we play Leicester. Surely there must be more to this?

I remember watching the Hull highlights on MOTD and was suprised by Simpson's attitude and verbal from the bench in one clip, add that to the 'banter' with Barton (c) about Rio that looked like it was as much needle as banter and the fact that a new player has just waltzed into his position and you can see why he has gone. I thought he was good for us, but had to say that when BAE first came to LR and was still bothering, he looked twice the player Danny did. He has gone to a prem side, nearer his hometown, so all the Best to him. That tackle with his head at the corner of LR last year will always be remembered fondly by me and most of us.
