DM 17:12 - Aug 23 with 7312 views | magicdaps10 | Not taking away from the win here at all but the second half showed our need for a DM who can break the opposistions play up when we are under the cosh. We didnt lose today because they didnt finish their chances, got to take this on board in the last week of the transfer window. That aside, well done the lads.........6 points from 6.

DM on 19:34 - Aug 23 by DwightYorkeSuperstar | We've been doing it since he took charge. He sorted it towards the end of last season but I am speechless as to why he allowed it to happen today. It was clearly his chosen tactic as he at no point encouraged the players forward during the second half. |
It was like the WBA and Palace games. Don't think it was a chosen tactic, we just didn't have anyone to drive us out

We were getting creamed in the middle of the park with no options on the bench. Agree we ought to have tried pushing them out but the danger was that we would given them more space behind the back 4 to play in. We all know that we missed Leon but we need options when Leon is out. Today's team was the best we had available and that is an issue that I am sure that the management is aware of.
DM on 19:55 - Aug 23 with 1901 views | magicdaps10 | Ki and Shelvey are not DM's in any shape....................mould the two and they would make a good DM. For one has the other lacks!! Ki holds his position but lacks the physical side and Jonjo has the physical but does not know how to hold his position. We were crying out for a DM who can hold their position and turn the players ahead of him could hold theirs and able to break play up and possibly set up a beneficial counter attack.........................with all the players ahead in their required shape and not being pulled out due to the lack of posistional sense and physicality from Ki and Shelvey. If we get the DM player in we so require then it would allow Shelvey or Ki to carry on with work required as true CM player. If we get Stambouli then we get a top DM who can play also..............and I mean the boy can pass both short and long.

DM on 20:41 - Aug 23 with 1819 views | jackonicko | I think it was just a lack of options to change things. JJS was having a shocker but there wasn't really anything on the bench for a like for like swap. After the Villareal debacle, GM would have been very brave to do anything too radical formation-wise when we were 1 up and defensively still pretty organised.

DM on 19:40 - Aug 23 by Tom1912 | I don't think it was a tactic on our part. For me the biggest factor from our point of view was centre midfield. Shelvey went to pieces second half and we desperately needed Britton. We were struggling to keep the ball comfortabley at the back and couldn't build our attack like we did first half because they pressed us higher and with more tempo. Britton would have helped things ticking and allowed us to move the ball into the space we needed to move forward. Without him the momentum wasn't there and we were disjointed when moving forward. We continually had players in positions with no support and we were unable to sustain possession. |
I agree with this. I thought Shelvey was definitely the weak link second half. He was misplacing passes, missing tackles and getting caught out of position. He made life harder for those around him. And I'm sure part of it was mental, he got himself worked up, lost his cool and it showed. If we'd had someone capable on the bench, I'd have subbed him. But it wasn't an option. I even mooted bringing Bartley on and pushing Amat into CDM. I thought Ki did quite well for the most part. He is a bit light weight in the tackle but he made some crucial challenges. He is cooler under pressure than JJS. Also, our choices all over the pitch were poor. We chose passes to players under pressure, our wide men weren't looking for space, they started coming inside for a while and Gylfi was wandering a bit too much. We lost our shape and our composure for a bit. But we held on and plenty of times in the past we would have folded. I like JJS but we need an option off the bench until Leon's back, and I really hope the loan player (Carroll) can be that option. Unless we manage to sign someone obviously!

(No subject) (n/t) on 19:10 - Aug 23 by DwightYorkeSuperstar | I have repeated numerous times recently that our recent run of competitive results has been acceptable. I've even mentioned how Garry has improved in terms of tactical awareness since his introduction to football management. [Post edited 23 Aug 2014 19:12]

5 wins in our last 6 Premier League games is "acceptable" I would say it is absolutely outstanding. But then I'm a supporter.

6/6 would be practically unheard of for a club like ours and off the scale. To call 5 out of 6 just "acceptable", and that probably through gritted teeth, says a lot.

While reading the thread, was putting together what my thoughts were. You've posted nearly word for word. JJS was off the pace totally. That added pressure onto Ki & Gylfi and around the 75min I thought all 3 had lost all energy and had nothing left to give.
DM on 21:49 - Aug 23 with 1629 views | Martyrman57 | I so hope we keep getting acceptable results (5 wins out of 6). We could never aspire to Dwight's beloved Manure's outstanding results. 4-0 wasn't it
DM on 21:51 - Aug 23 with 1624 views | oldcob | People seem to forget we had a hard working team against us. We were not allowed to do as we wanted. There are two sides on the pitch. We were best team first half, second half honours even. Job done 3 pts. We can only play as well as the opposition allow, we have no devine right to play as we wish, the opposition whosoever they are study us in the week and adapt their tactics to stop us playing as we wish. Its a contest. Come on boys lets get real.
DM on 22:50 - Aug 23 with 1554 views | Martyrman57 | Well said oldcob
DM on 23:21 - Aug 23 with 1513 views | dameedna | We did well in the second half which was to defend in the middle and try and get the wingers away. One moment from Monte in the dying minutes typified how our wingers defended in the second half when he tracked back and won the ball on the edge of the area. All teams have enough quality to score a goal and we did the right thing. If they had scored our wingers would have attacked more and received more support in the middle. We defended well and kept a clean sheet, just. Could have done with one more quality CM like JDG to come on and get some fluidity and fresh legs but we manage well enough.

The bit than missing is that we didn't take our gilt edged chances either. If both sides had it would have been about 5-2. Easy to just concentrate on the second half. I was doing that after the game. Much happier this morning thinking with a whole game perspective although I hope we don't have to endure too many second half Alamos this year and put our chances away.

DM on 17:23 - Aug 23 by DwightYorkeSuperstar | It reminded me of the matches at the beginning of Garry's tenure as care taker manager. We played well the first half with a clearly defined plan and we clearly prepared before game for the tactics the opposition would use. Then came the second half where the opposition manager changes things and Garry is utterly devoid of ideas as to how to play against the new tactics the opposition employ. We were lucky to win today. That being said the first half was a solid 45 minutes. |
He wasn't devoid of ideas. Our players tired, Burnley up their game but at the end of it they still only had one chance (from which they should have scored) Even in the second half we should have increased our lead, although we should have but the game to bed before that. As a young manager learning his trade, he's got two wins out of two in the Premier League this season. You cannot ask for better. How many has that Worldbeater LVG got? 0 out of 1 so far Stop being negative issit! Also I could hear your sighs every time Shelvey touched the ball yesterday all the way from my seat in the South. Not one of his better games, but still did enough! Also towards the end of last season we may well have drawn or lost that game, so a great improvement! [Post edited 24 Aug 2014 9:17]

DM on 09:42 - Aug 24 with 1280 views | Musical_Swan | Shelvey's distribution yesterday was,at times, poor at best, and second half he had a mare. However, even with a poor display he RAN the game in the first half. He found acres of room in both deep and attacking areas, and his range of passing kept them guessing throughout the first half, whether it was a 40 yard pelter from deep, drilled into Bony's feet (who's link up play and first touch was sublime yesterday, contrary to someone who posted earlier saying he was shit!) or his link up play with Gylfi up top. With Leon in the side I believe this will take some pressure off him, and hopefully we will start seeing more consistency in his play, as I believe with a JJS fully firing we are a different beast all together.

So you were not at the game but yet you are commenting on someone's view about what we needed who was at yesterdays game? Really!? P.S Was also at the Villareal game and it stood out to me also then like a sore thumb what we were lacking.

DM on 17:58 - Aug 23 by Neath_Jack | We are disjointed without a proper DM in there. JJS and Ki trying to share the load between them, seems like they haven't got their own defined roles, just muck in together sort of thing. |
Spot on. We need another specialist DM and not this Ki/JJS jobshare thing. Leon is 32 in a couple of weeks and needs cover at least. Let's hope Stambouli signs and Carroll turns out to be decent - Sheehan and Jazz were our midfield options off the bench yesterday...

Of course we need a DM, its so obvious!! Of course we want a DM who can also play aswell which is paramount to the style we play. Leon does a job infront of the back four and keeps the ball moving quickly and holds his shape and inturn the teams shape fantastically but he is a holding midfielder and in now was a enforcing DM player. There will be times when we need Leon sat in there but there are times we will need a DM who can break up play aswell as keep a platform infront of the back four and throw in that man who can pick a pass out..............then we could have picked of a team like Burnley in the second half with a counter and got another goal or possibly got a 3rd. Shelvey and Ki are not DM players and got pulled out of shape due to their lack of qualities that are required to be a true Dm which inturn pulled other players further forward than them out of position. When we had the chance to counter you could then see the shape at been pulled about and players were at a loss to pick out the right men because they were no longer In the position they thougt they were. I would ask some fans to instead take a minute or so to not just watch the ball during the game but notice the set up further forward when we are defending.
