O/T Homeogenised Milk Rant 16:15 - Aug 10 with 2547 viewsOdinsRaven

I have followed with disdain the push to homogenised milk and the slow push to get us all drinking long life milk while calling it fresh. Supermarket fresh milk currently seems to stay fresh for a miraculous ten days or more...

The final straw came on Friday whilst perusing the dairy section of Asda when I headed for my one last bastion of fresh real milk the one pint Jersey bottle at a massive one pound.

Now I've always been happy to pay a pound for this creamy luxury despite being able to buy four pints for the same price.

Imagine my delight as I notice the jersey brand is now promising a new creamier throughout taste. But wait, what's this... Omg my last bastion is now creamier throughout as it is now homogenised.

Now anyone interested in milk production will know homogenisation is the process of forcing the milk through high pressure tunes and changing the dynamics of the fat molecules in milk so it is evenly spread in the milk. However the problem is that our little tummies cannot digest this change in the make up of the milk.

So now in Asda and Tesco one can no longer purchase real fresh milk. Only Sainsbury continues to offer a real non homogenised milk product by way of their taste the difference range at 75p for 750ml. I did notice however they are also selling the same new smoother jersey homogenised pint for one pound.

A truly sad day for real milk :-(

I'm not too fussed about the milk, but I find the lack of real gold top yogurts very upsetting. Maybe we should start a save our milk products movement?

OK, agree with nearly all that, O/P except the digestion bit, don't think there is any evidence of that, enzymes can still attack the protein coating on the droplets.

Homog has been around for years, but it's widespread use started when the dairies were allowed to start standardising milk down to 3.3% (?) Basically, they could then skim a bit of cream off ordinary milk, use it for cream and still sell a pint of milk

Nothing like a real pint of Gold Top, and would now much prefer non homog everywhere like it used to be during my 15 odd years in liquid milk dairies

Life isn't fair. Learn that early on, and you will worry less and do more.
