Surely the rest of the squad would have benefited from playing in a known formation and one which (hopefully) be the more often than not used setup.

I would have started with the formation that he intends to use for the first game of the season.
Even with "key" players missing, I would have thought more could have been found out by playing the formation that what went on today.

After today's match... if he still thinks he can run a 4-4-2 or a 3-5-2 with our squad he's either suicidal or daft. If they want to partner up Bony and Gomis they'd be better at sending one into a wing position I'd think. Two in the front is not a bad thing, but it has to be in a system that solidifies the back and the midfield for better relay. all this running about creates to much space and our defence at current level can't cope with all the open pockets. |  |

The real discussion is probably only worth having at 3pm next week though? For today was just nuts. It was a pleasure to watch Villareal mind; a team with a real teamwork ethic and choc full of understated players with passing control and spatial technique that was, I'd hoped, and still hope, our own competitive advantage. They also closed us down relentlessly. I thought we were half arsed, but I don't think they were. If we play like that again then we really have a problem, as if the management can't learn from that they are stupid.
The real positive of course, with a kind assumption that the management are not really stupid, is that ManU who will have been watching closely will learn nothing. Is Monk that cute? Rhetorical question, no answers required.
