Why couldn't Monk have played the normal formation today? 17:13 - Aug 9 with 5643 views | Jackfath | I am not buying into the "he couldn't play his normal formation with Dyer and Routs missing". Surely the rest of the squad would have benefited from playing in a known formation and one which (hopefully) be the more often than not used setup.

People saying he was using today to experiment a plan B are giving Monk far too much credit... his passion for the club is commendable but his ability as a coach/manager is very questionable.

My mate's a Reading ST holder and he reckons they'll go down this year. Just might have something to do with it...

Jenkins is clearly telling him to play that formation mun on account of it bringing us all of our success of the last ten years. Clue in, Starsk. Monk obviously loves 442 because in all the years he's been here we've hardly ever played that formation. Stands to reason.

I would have started with the formation that he intends to use for the first game of the season. Even with "key" players missing, I would have thought more could have been found out by playing the formation that what went on today. But then again, what do I know.

We play 442 then we are f*cked We haven't got a Yaya or a Fernandinho that would allow us to do that. I hope that you are wrong in your assertion that he likes 442 Mr Hunt, as that formation is dead in the water and has been since 2010

It wasn't about who he picked it was about the formation/tactics.

Yes, it was a friendly and we were an utter f*cking shambles. Shapeless, clueless hoofball. Flat 4-4-2 (f*ck my eyes!) with square pegs in round holes. No tactical changes, no subs to speak of and half the team looked f*cked with twenty minutes to go. One week to go with a threadbare squad and a game against our first serious opponents - If anyone believes this was another "experiment" they're f*cking deluded.

After today's match... if he still thinks he can run a 4-4-2 or a 3-5-2 with our squad he's either suicidal or daft. If they want to partner up Bony and Gomis they'd be better at sending one into a wing position I'd think. Two in the front is not a bad thing, but it has to be in a system that solidifies the back and the midfield for better relay. all this running about creates to much space and our defence at current level can't cope with all the open pockets.

Why couldn't Monk have played the normal formation today? on 17:33 - Aug 9 with 2681 views | monmouth | God knows Fath. I hope someone asks him in the interviews. The real discussion is probably only worth having at 3pm next week though? For today was just nuts. It was a pleasure to watch Villareal mind; a team with a real teamwork ethic and choc full of understated players with passing control and spatial technique that was, I'd hoped, and still hope, our own competitive advantage. They also closed us down relentlessly. I thought we were half arsed, but I don't think they were. If we play like that again then we really have a problem, as if the management can't learn from that they are stupid. The real positive of course, with a kind assumption that the management are not really stupid, is that ManU who will have been watching closely will learn nothing. Is Monk that cute? Rhetorical question, no answers required. No comfort but Villareal were good mind, very good.

I watched Villareal the week before at Boro and it wasn't as easy for them as it was today.
