No idea how reliable this report is but apparently Spurs have "in principle" agreed terms with Ben Davies.

Considering Chico enjoys running everywhere apart from where he is supposed to be,why not play him full back ?

very good technical player, no slower than rangel/dwight,can beat a man ,can pass and will win us tons of free kicks with his constant diving.

Put a centre half in that keeps good positional sense and we got a good option :)

I don't think Chico would go walkabout if his fullback was a bit more in it.

The same Chico you've buried for months?

Routledge was wanted off the books at Newcastle, which I previously discussed. Not relevant to this discussion.

Amat, bought as a future prospect, not someone we were going to put straight in to the side, again not relevant.

Michu is the anomaly, and a lot to do with the current manager. Never denying there are gems on the continent.

If we're looking at quality to go straight into the side, £10m isn't going to cut it.

Not a scape goat just an honest assessment of his ability. It's clear from that post your view is clouded by a fair amount of fanciful nonsense.

£10m isn't a quick buck. It's a huge fee for a full-back who we could replace for a fraction of that cost.

As you know so much about the subject please supply the names of all these Full Backs as good or better than Ben who are available "for a fraction of that cost"
ps With at least 2 years of Premier experience of course.

Quite true in fairness but all our defenders are guilty of it though, maybe a spike in the grass and a bit of rope would be the answer ?

They can walkabout but not too far .. lol

It is funny to see all those accusing Players of "Not getting forward and supporting the Attack often enough" and then blaming them for not being in the right place at the right time when the counter attack happens.

An OK centre half who came straight in to the squad for £2million. I'm not his biggest fan but he's been a very good signing value for money. Amat has made an immediate contribution as well and started 25 games last year, hardly a bit part player.

Like Warwick has illustrated already we can easily buy a starter for £10m. If your argument is that we need to spend over £10m to get quality starters then f*ck knows how we fielded a competitive team last season because we've only exceeded that once.

Shelvey, Ki, Pablo, Gomis, Fabianski?

Fabianski is on a free.

Shelvey not wanted at Liverpool, we wouldn't have exactly got him otherwise.

Ki was a waste of money.

Pablo hasn't yet merited, what at the time, was our record fee.

Gomis is, on the surface, a free.

Wilfred Bony cost us a reported £12m and has been worth every penny. Go figure.

Keep em coming though, if we're looking to reinvest that goldmine of £10m into a quality replacement then we'll need luck, guile, and more luck.

Seriously? That's all you've got? Asking some no-mark on a football forum to list potential replacements? I'm fairly sure we have a scouting department to do that.

No, we need to spend that to get better than what we're replacing, is my point. Anything else and we're going backwards.

You realise that just because a player wasn't wanted at his former club doesn't mean you can disregard their success here? We've built our success on taking other clubs cast-offs. Your point is crumbling and you're getting desperate by dismissing the several contradictions to your argument.

Do you genuinely think we can't get a better left-back than Ben for £10m (with change to spare)?

You're not following the original line, which was that we wouldn't sell below £10m for any player we wanted to keep, and wouldn't expect any other clubs to do similar. Below that and we're looking at players who are wanted off the books by other clubs, which is a different concept entirely to identifying players that we would like to add to the squad, regardless of availability.

Do keep up, thanks.

Your argument is so flawed and you seem to pick and choose when a player is relevant to your argument or not.
So Fabianski and Gomis are "free", Shelvey and Routledge weren't wanted by their clubs. That means we shouldn't touch them?? What nonsense.
Ibrahimovic was rejected by QPR as a kid, guess no one else should have bothered with him either?

At the risk of this turning into a mutual backslapping fest, you're spot on.

There's no magic threshold where a player suddenly becomes PL quality.

Would Gomis have been a better signing if we paid £10m+ upfront for him?
Do we discount Fabianski because he's a free transfer? And presumably because he's a goalkeeper.

Would Siggy qualify if we bought him for £9m? Serious question...

I wouldn't know what your talking about there TBH.

A defenders job is to defend first and formost, something we have been getting collectively worse at this season gone, its a question of balance of course .

Right so you've set the bar at £10m which is some imaginary figure which you've conjured up that we wouldn't sell any player below. You've created these two apparently separate concepts for buying players which is totally irrelevant to the issue of improving the quality of our squad.

Complete nonsense in other words and I'm not sure what you're debating. The fact that remains that selling Ben Davies for £10m would be a fantastic bit of business.

Too much confusion here.

I Discount Fabianski and Gomis because we didn't pay a fee for them. They don't fit into the 'can we get quality for 10m' argument, which is what I'm on, I'm not sure about anyone else.

To go out, and identify a player that we would like to bring in (ala Bony) and spend a maximum of £10m. To come back with anything better would be a struggle.

Go have a lie down mun.

£10m is a poor figure for a talented player that we want to keep. It is of no value to us, we cannot buy better. We wouldn't sell any player for that fee that were important for us to keep. Ash, Bony, Ben, even Leon Britton.

There is nothing difficult there.

Let me explain it to you, mush.

We sell Ben Davies for £10m, sign Marcos Alonso for £3m who is a more than adequate replacement with £7m to spare and improve the overall quality of the team. It doesn't actually count though as Alonso wasn't wanted by Fiorentina thus creating a separate context in which to judge the transfer. As we failed to replace Ben with a player actually wanted by his club and paid above the magic figure £10m we have failed in our dealings.

Do keep up.
