Garry & Huw press conference on 09:24 - May 10 by blaine_scfc
He's got the job, and I'm behind him. But there is no way with the set of fixtures we had, and the results we got in that period, did he earn a three year contract. That press conference also confirms to me we didn't even look at other potential candidates.
Which it the worst part .... if we had interviewed potential candidates and Monk was perceived to be the best option .... so be it.
Obviously that has not happened.

BLOOD AND GUTS is good. It means you don't care if you get a small cut or a big one come to that. It also means you aint afraid which is what made VASQUEZ so sickening a site in our clubs shirt. Clearing your lines =hoofing. Who d have thought it, moving the ball away from a dangerous goal scoring position for the opposition.
Some apparently want us to feck around for no other apparent reason than to be seen passing the ball. It only invites pressure from the opposition who often take the opportunity to score against us.

Vasquez limitations in a Swansea shirt have been apparent for all to see. However saying it was a sickening sight is rather OTT.

Fuk Monk is going to turn into Revie's dirty Leeds of the 70's.
Can see Lita & Tatey being in next seasons starting 11.

I have no problem with being more aggressive against the "bigger" sides. Conceding the three points before the game even started was one of the main sticks I used to beat Laudrup with.
You're not going to just do it with an "up and at em!" attitude though. Requires quality players and quality management. Something that we've yet to see if Monk can do anything about.
Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

ML did well in the first season and OK in the second and we all know the reasons for the dip. Unprecedented injuries and extra games due to Europe plus a good Cup run. Martinez when at Wigan used to try and stand toe to toe with the top clubs and had quite a few tw@ttings for his trouble. Our goal difference this year suggests we were not far short of causing a few upsets regardless.

The seemingly widespread view that Laudrup conceded games against the bigger sides is some kind of twisted parallel dimension version of the reality.
In the real world he acknowledged that they had spent significantly larger sums of money on their squads and so had access to better individual quality.
These are statements of fact, not an unconditional surrender, FFS.

Correct ..........
No doubt when we go to toe to toe with the big boys next season our goal difference will be significantly worse.

Yeah Cardiff spent more money than us,you haven't got a copy of Cardiff away to watch have you?

The 'swansea way' for me has been signing brilliant young up and coming managers. Who wanted to play the game the right way. Were able to tactically influence the game before and during. Who had great contacts so that they were able to bring players in who each time raised us at the level we were at. Within a small budget. Outside of this whether they knew the tea ladies name etc or not is irrelevant for me.

Good post that Richie, although Vasquez is still a young lad who could eventually come on, but he's a long way off yet and is out of his depth at this level, imho.

You'd have thought that being a solid mid-table PL club with a (fairly) major trophy and acquiting ourselves very well in Europe would have achieved that. Not to mention a profit of £21m last year.
ps Garry's been at the club ten years - he should have said, mun.

What do you see as being the next step for us as a club then? How do you think we should go about it and how big a club do you think we can realistically become and over what time frame?

Gradual consolidation, progression and growth - I don't expect sh1t miracles and we'll never be a massive club either.
We seem to be closing ranks and using this ludicrous "Swansea Way" bollocks as an excuse for not pushing on. Next season will be our fourth consecutive one in the world's greatest league yet we don't even interview a single outsider for a crucial appointment.
Does anyone seriously think we can finish 9th again next season under Monk? Huw seems very fond of the "going forward" cliché - shame he doesn't practise what he preaches.

Which was why he was manager at Swansea not Barca or Real Madrid. Point being that by no means was he perfect and nor should we expect him to be .
Anyway Monk is the man in control , there will be alot of movement in playing staff in and out and i expect the board to back Garry 100% , a few top signings and everyone will be eager for our season to start and we can hopefully put the past behind us .

Quite right, I was at the emirates last season to see us beat arsenal 2-0 with arguably our best ever away league win. Laudrup cleverly understood the need to play down expectations but make no mistake the man was a winner. Take the two legs against Chelsea as the perfect example of knowing what was needed, tactically too.

Last season saw some great performances against some of the top sides, tactically spot on and a desire and belief to get a result. Liverpool away in cup, Arsenal away and Chelsea in cup the stand out results.
This season, for whatever reason that all changed and we appeared happy to end the game with a narrow defeat. Spurs away, United away in league, Chelsea away, City home etc were all games where you felt that a bit more intent and purpose would have got us a result, but we seemed to allow the games to fade out and be accepting of a decent performance.
