Chair finally in the middle long term? 22:53 - Feb 4 with 3770 viewsJevlar

A lot of positives tonight but one thing that feels like it’s been in the making forever is Illy playing in the Number 10 behind the striker role.

Bar getting a goal (which his first half display deserved) he had a great game. Anyone else feel he now needs to play there permanently and let Saito/Kolli take up the left wing berth?

I'd say yes at home or when playing teams we expect to sit in and need breaking down. If we're away or against a team likely to dominate possession then I'd go Field, Varane and Morgan. Good option to have though.

Agree to this.

Chair is an absolute joy to watch in the middle, but away games or games we expect less of the ball - Varane, Field & Morgan offers more steel, with Colback off the bench.

Saying that, watching Chair in that first half dictating is why you pay to watch football.

For all that he should have scored and that’s what he still needs to improve on

It's something I've been calling for for some time, and Marti needs to see it. He's not a winger; he's a creative playmaker behind the centre forward. Saito and Smyth need to play as the wingers they are.

Poll: Playoffs?

Yeah definitely, deserved a goal tonight, a great performance, we get far more out of him there than out wide! Did so many good things tonight and showing how influential he can be for us!
Looks like another good bit of work with the contract!

I imagine Morgan has been playing 10 while he gets up to speed, and Chair returned from injury.
Think the way we setup last night will be the default at home.

Chair was my MotM. He was everywhere, not only dictating play but getting back to help Field too.

I'd keep him there v Coventry away, swap Morgan with Varane and play 2 deep with Chair more advanced. Morgan has looked quite ragged in the last few games and a little time on the bench would be beneficial for the lad.

About bloody time id say.

With the ability he has he should have been in that role for years. Apart from his contribution which was immense, it freed up Paal in open play, who looked a totally different player to the one we’ve been watching through 2024.

Blackburn are decent but the sort of side we enjoy playing against. We need to find a way to knock it about against this leagues ruffians but winning last night, in the fashion we did, against a top six side is a step in the right direction.

I thought Morgan was fairly anonymous last night. Overdue a rest?

I think so. Since mid-October he's been ever present playing 21 consecutive games in the league and starting them in all but one. Given he's 18 and in his first season as a pro footballer, he's done incredibly well but is now probably due a little spell on the bench.

Playing your most creative and technically gifted player at 10 just makes sense, doesn’t it?

From that central role, he can roam freely, linking up with the LW, RW, and CF fluidly. He can hold it, dribble, drop his shoulder to beat defenders, and thread through those killer passes. Plus, playing off the CF - as he did a few times with Frey in the first half - just clicks naturally.

Also he’s no luxury player like a Madsen-style drifter. His work rate is undeniable, tracking back and doing the dirty work. Great balance of flair and graft and would love to see more of him there now we have genuinely decent options out wide.

Please keep him in the middle as he was wonderful last night. In that position, he has the ability to terrorise any team in this division. His movement, vision, range of pass and game intelligence make him a natural in that role. The goals will come too.

That was the key last night, I think?
If the 10 doesn't help out in central midfield we get overrun, as we did earlier in the season time and time again.

Chair was everwhere last night, particularly in the first half.

Big difference though between how he's been played at 10 before (almost in the hole or behind the 2nd striker) and how Marti played him last night, starting deeper in a midfield 3 and drifting to the left (Morgan going to the right). Previously when played at Traditional 10, he has struggled to affect the game as was easily man marked by the opposition 6.

Always felt he would end up in the centre midfield

Thought he was outstanding last night, especially in the first half. His performance deserved a goal, but he pretty much got both assists.

For the 2nd goal, when Cook first receives the ball, Chair is right on the byline by the Paddocks. As Cook looks up, Chair starts to drift into the box. Cook's deep high ball recieves a collective groan from the crowd as they think his cross is way overhit until you see Chair darting in at the back post totally unmarked to head it back across goal. Brilliant play from both Cook and Chair there.

Chair did very well in the 10 role and no doubt he'll be used there more if he stays fit. But what was most notable for me was how much sharper he was than in his previous games since returning from his last injury. Looked considerably more fit suddenly. Great to see, it has taken some time. Just his finishing still not quite there.

In short, YES. We play best when running through Chair, who is still our best player, and having him in the middle is the way to achieve that. He can drift from side to side, linking up with both full back / winger combinations (as he did brilliantly for the move that led to the Paal free kick and opening goal), and offer himself as an option in the final third. Both Smyth and Saito staying wide gives him and Morgan more space centrally, and I trust that S&S work hard enough both ways to not make the lack of another DM as much of a liability.

The downside is out of possession and figuring how to stop quick transitions. I was a little surprised Chair essentially took the Field role when we didn't have the ball - dropping deeper alongside Field who took the 'Varane' position, and Morgan was still being the one to press, but Marti addressed it himself in the post-match - there's still stuff to work on to find a better balance. The upside of being more threatening - especially if/when we regain possession high - is well worth the balance risk, IMO.

Also, as Brian mentioned, this only worked at all due to the work rate of Chair and Morgan, so we need to find ways to rotate them effectively and be quick to adjust if teams are exploiting the change too much.

When out of possession, absolutely. But Field isn't close to good enough as an 8 / advanced CM and Varane is a pure DM in the Hayden mould. We looked much more attacking and creative last night. Let's live a little, it's only the Championship.
