Only one of those things will happen.

He’s looking like some player but he is also playing instead of Morrison, who should be starting for us.

I think Marti is right to play the best players we have while we have them. I think Cook is going to have to get his form back quick otherwise Morrison may take his place.

Agreed, proper decent....he has chances to make it in the Premiership and maybe more if he continues to develop.

I certainly thought that when I saw the line up. We must have had half a dozen centre back pairings this season - but given that our good run started when Cook & Morrison teamed up, my thinking was: JCS injured, Jimmy back to RB, Fox to the bench, also Edwards as he's not ours...and reunite that proven pairing.

But then he plays like that!

Tough call for Marti tbf.

You are 100% right - It is a tough call for MC......Edwards is the much better player but Morrison is 'ours' & has played decent and needs game exposure. However, MC is a winner and so he picks his strongest team plus we are not out of getting further up the league so perhaps MC thoughts were all about winning & progression.

Looks like Superman (Christopher Reeves) and beginning to play like him. Also reminds me of Terry Fenwick the way he brings the ball out of defence. TF one of our greatest defensive players who could easily play Center back, midfield or right back. Pure class

The way I look at that is, when we had Kyle Walker on loan, there's no way you would have played Bradley Orr ahead of him.

Different stage of his career to Liam I know, and I do think Morrison could be a great player for us. So I do accept the development aspect.

But Orr was a decent player, whereas Walker was just farcically above Championship level. Edwards verged on looking like that last night at times I thought.

If he keeps putting out performances of such a high standard for the remainder of the season, it's not beyond the realms of possibility that a club like Palace puts a bid in for him. They are one club in the Premier League that clearly monitors this league for talented players: Eze, Wharton, Olise, Esse and Sarr attest to that.

He reminds me of the late, great Glenn Roeder in the manner in which he brings the ball out of defence. The ability/bravery/willingness to do that is not seen very often in today's game but is highly effective, as evidenced last night.

Big difference was that season we were fighting at the top for promotion.

Think Edwards is doing great and whilst we are still in with a playoff chance it makes sense to play him but once it’s clear that we are mid table at best then I’d 100% play Morrison ahead of him. Morrison was having a great season until he got injured and should be our first choice CB for the next few years whereas Edwards will be first choice CB for Southampton.

It’s frustrating as due to Southampton’s sheer abjectness this season they will definitely want to keep him for the Championship next year: if they stayed up we might have had a chance of signing him.

Ronnie was absolute class last night - my MOTM hands down.

I really liked his driving runs forward, but I couldn't help thinking that was more out of a necessity to break the lines as Chair wasn't coming deep (where Varane/Field would usually occupy that space).

His passing also, there was one first half where he came out with the ball down the left and planted a perfect 60 yard cross field ball on Smyth's chest. At times especially first half, he was acting as playmaker. Hence I was calling him Ronnie Beckenbauer alongside our Jimmy Cafu

Yeah I don't disagree with that - different story once we're mathematically out of the play-offs.

He does at least increase our chances a bit of that being a bit later into the season.

Pleased to hear he had a great game.

I wasn't there last night but in the games he's played till then I thought he looked solid but nothing more. Definitely not the second coming of Der Kaiser!

Excellent ‘Rolls Royce’ performance. Think he will likely be the outstanding defender in the league next season.

Might also be part of the loan deal if we've guaranteed a certain number of appearances/minutes?

He was very useful at beating their press last night because he was able to commit and beat a couple of players himself, which then draws others across and opens up space, often to free Paal down the left.

That's often been a problem for us, passing around the back in front of teams. When you have a defender who can step out on the ball like that it's transformative to our style - it's why we were so much better with JCS and Morrison playing.

There were a couple of points where he got all the way out to the left wing, laid it off, and his first thought was to run on into space to give an option for a quick pass back. Nothing reckless, it didn't come back to him immediately so he checked himself and dropped back into defence, but interesting that his first thought was a progressive one about carrying on the attack. You could see how much it rattled Blackburn to suddenly have him up there and looking to play forwards.

Dog in the playground syndrome. They're all detailed to pick a man up, suddenly a centre back is marauding towards with them with the ball. Chaos.

Believe Southampton only paid £1.5m and £1.5m in add ons. But he came with a 40% sell on fee.
