I find the EDB situation a mystery. Am by nature highly sceptical of conspiracy theories but I can't help wondering if something has happened behind the scenes. To be given a new contract in the summer and seemingly set to have a breakthrough season but then so far down the pecking order that even if 5 or 6 other midfielders were shot, Marti would still be reluctant to play him. |

Well Morgan would have to sell for a seriously big fee. Lets say the Madsen fee is 2m (a very conservative estimate). Lets say he is on 20k a week (not ridiculous seeing as he cost 2m plus). That is £1m per year salary. So £5m in wages over 5 years. And with the 2m transfer fee that's 7m. Will we get 7m for Morgan? And that's just to break even, not leaving us any money to re-invest. So no, I just don't think you can count all transfers as being of equal significance, you have to judge according to outlay. Absolutely no problems with taking punts on the likes of Santos (possibly a fail but very early to tell) and Morgan (almost certainly a big win). But if you spend Madsen money on a player a club like us just can't afford to get it SO badly wrong. He is SO lacking in what is required of a Championship footballer I can only conclude that a) he wasn't scouted at all and we simply signed him on his stats, or b) he was watched when he was playing such low-grade, weak as piss opposition that no lessons should have been taken from the match, and c) the edict that we would from now on assess a player's character as well as playing performance must have been waived for this signing. Am not voting because its a bit like taking time to seriously think if you love your wife a bit less because she made herself a cup of tea but didn't offer you one. Its irritating, but its so not the reason you are either going to stay married or file for divorce. It would be a bit menopausal to change your view of a manager after one cup game (and I speak as one who was quite frustrated for all the reasons highlighted by many posters and by Clive in his report). |

Regardless of the precise figure I don't think anyone disputes that he is one of our two most expensive signings from the last window, widely reported to be around £3m. This club is not the only source of information, there is the agent and the selling club along with numerous other officials, friends, contacts etc who can all leak information. The bottom line is we have paid, on a 5-year contract, what is for us a huge amount of money on one of the most frustratingly disappointing players many of us can remember pulling on the shirt. As such this is a completely different category of failed signing than, for example, Santos might prove to be. I called Madsen the "friendly ghost" but I think Clive's "empty shirt" is better. The shirt is empty, and so too are our pockets. |
| Forum Reply | A mist opportunity as Foxes hit QPR for six – Report at 16:29 13 Jan 2025
Re the interviewer they are obviously the gentlest lobs delivered since Beefy Botham trundled in during his last season as a bowler on a soft wicket. Woodward and Bernstein, he ain't. But I think you are confusing PR with journalism. Its an in-house puff-job to play up success and play down failure. He is not going to ask why we wasted several million on Madsen, why we are developing a mediocre and inexperienced right back for Newcastle, or why he talked up our cup prospects only to field a weakened team against much stronger opposition. That would be decent journalism, but he is part of the marketing dept. Besides, even if he were a hack, sports journalists are among the most craven of the breed anyway (because they are terrified of being denied future access). |
| Forum Reply | Varane and Kolli Brilliant Goals at 14:07 13 Jan 2025
Anyone got any stats on Kolli now? How many minutes per goal? What is his xG etc? As we have seen with other players, stats are not everything, but for someone I didn't even realise could play as an out and out striker he seems to have a calmness and poise in front of goal that both belies his age and suggests he could be a number 9, particularly when you factor in his growing strength and nuisance value to defenders. Yes he might have done better with the promising chance he tried to curl into the top right corner but we have seen our main strikers miss far easier chances than the one he nonchalantly put away. |

That would be a perfectly rational comment if, as one of about 9 or 10 incomers, he had used up a comparable amount of the transfer budget. But he was our "marquee" signing. |

I like this idea. I would certainly bid big to be the controller. However, I think you could have a ten pound rocket taped up his arse and it wouldn't get him motivated. Even when he does move it is just to sort of waft about in vague proximity to the ball, there is never any intent to actually win it. As for the old troupe that there might be mental health/ other issues at play, judging by his social media feed with shopping in Knightsbridge and exploring the Michelin Guide, he doesn't look terribly upset. Indeed, he looks jolly happy with life, as well he might on a five-year-contract. |

Don’t disagree with your list of who isn’t good enough but how would we get rid of them? No one would buy them and they are all under contract. The fact we have a lot of players who aren’t good enough - and a number of who are - is precisely why we are a mid table Championship team. It’s the same at most clubs around us in the league I expect. The disappointment is how poor the last window was for us relative to outlay. All bar a couple of the players who are good enough were in the building last season and everyone who isn’t good enough is a new arrival |

Thank you for your honesty. Only thing i disagree with there is that the criticism has been over the top. I think its been under-stated. I genuinely think he is a disgrace. Factor in the transfer fee, and presumably the wages that go with it, (judging by the photos he posts of himself on social media carrying bags from Harvey Nicks and dining at Bardo) he must be the worst signing since Mark Hateley or Ned Zelic. |

Genuine question, so were you impressed by his performance today? Were you proud to have a player like that representing Queens Park Rangers? Seeing as the problem for Madsen is apparently that the Championship isn't sophisticated enough for him, did you think that against Premiership opposition he was deftly "cutting off passing lines in shape"? As the game is apparently more measured and sedate at Premier League level, did you feel this enabled him to impose himself on the game while covering all that ground? Did you admire how hard he was trying? Admittedly it was very foggy but by the 42nd minute the commentator hadn't mentioned his name once. He might have been snuggled up in a blanket in the dugout, or sitting on a deckchair out on the right wing. I doubt it would have made the slightest difference to the result from my more basic perspective. How he apparently stayed on the pitch will have to remain a mystery to those simple souls like me who naively believe the job of a midfielder is to win the ball and pass it. Perhaps, as you imply, and the Championship isn't good enough for a man of his talents. I just wish some club who appreciates those talents would take him so he can display those talents on a bigger stage. |

Well my view of human nature is not so bleak as to think no one can ever change. But honestly, Madsen was being selected week after week and we were getting slaughtered with opposition players just running round through him at will. As others have said he shirked the challenge to allow Norwich to score recently so as yet I have seen very little improvement. We must assume, given what a good coach Marti is, that he might have politely suggested that a little more effort would be appreciated. But it’s not happening. The man would apparently rather be humiliated and have an 18-year-old virtual work experience lad take his place than pull his finger out. How many more chances can we afford to give him? What doesn’t he get? |

The problem, IMHO, is not that he is "lightweight". He is tall and well built from what I can see 30 yards away. The problem is he doesn't seem to try. if you are a modern footballer and don't run or apparently even attempt to head the ball or tackle, how is that remotely acceptable? Maybe a once in a generation Adel like player can get away with it in the Championship, but he is a million miles short of being that. Players can bulk up, but its hard to avoid the conclusion that with Madsen its more about attitude. |

If - and yes, I accept anything can still happen - we are heading for the reasonably calm waters of mid-table this season I would question the need for a striker. I know its almost a requirement for QPR fans to say "we need a striker", but as this would most likely entail a loan I would far prefer to develop two exciting young strikers of our own in Kolli and Lloyd and rotate them with Frey (this assuming we can tie Kolli down to a new contract). And at some point presumably Celar will come back. Recognise there is risk here but our signings are questionable enough in the close season (Madsen, Celar); lets, unless we are really desperate, keep our limited spending powder dry till the summer. Our scoring has actually been OK of late and whilst I have not seen and xg stats lately my hunch is we are close to scoring a few more than we are currently achieving. |

But the team is playing better in significant part precisely because they are NOT playing. We are playing better because we are pressing, playing at tempo and tackling. There is literally no evidence to point to that either Madsen or Andersen will do that - Andersen, tbf to him, probably more because his legs seem to have gone rather than bad attitude. We are not playing so well that we can afford to carry two passengers. |

Plus don't see Madsen doing any of the good things Wilkins did. Where are the side-splitting passes. As for the strategy / tactics not being right for him, welcome to the Championship. |

Santos and Bennie look miles off being ready to me. I like EDB but for whatever reason (maybe something entirely off-field?) he seems further in the cold than a forgotten cold war spy. Given Marti refuses to play him under almost any circumstance a loan would surely be beneficial and hopefully he can prove himself. |
