I don't see why necessarily. Obviously we're light at the back but it's bloody Middlesbrough, not Real Madrid. They'll play Assombalonga who can be great but is hit and miss with either Fletcher (average, soft) or Bamford (average, soft).
They can be got at at the back. Gibson is very good for this level but Fabio is still bloody Fabio and Randolph in goal is no Smithies IMO. Their midfield is decent but nothing to be scared of. | | | |

When did the U23's last play? If it was quite recently maybe they didn't travel? Otherwise Paul and Phillips on the bench wouldn't be a bad idea, I would worry about putting them in without Chief playing and helping them throughthings though, especially for a game like Boro away. | |
