Wayne Rooney Wants To Manage Southampton Monday, 13th Feb 2023 09:22 Perhaps the most bizarre rumour of the last 24 hours since Nathan Jones was sacked as Saints manager, is that former Everton & Manchester United player & Derby County manager & current DC United boss Wayne Rooney wants to manage Southampton.
Of course when a manager is sacked there is no shortage of candidates to replace them, most have absolutely no chance of getting the job and to be blunt you would hope that Wayne Rooney would fall into that category.
Various media outlets have been carrying the story with 90 mins claiming that not only would Rooney like to take over at St Mary's but that "intermediaries from the camp of the former Manchester United forward have been in touch with Southampton already"
Truly bizarre, although his playing career cannot be denied as being great, his managerial has only been underway since the summer of 2020 when he was appointed Derby County manager, he lasted there two seasons and resigned after the club were relegated to League One, although in fairness to Rooney they were in administration for most of that time.
He plotted up at DC United midway through the 2022 season.
Another man with former Everton connections is also said to be keen, the same report claims that Frank Lampard is also interested in the job

Rooney did quite well at Derby but Jones did very well at Luton... I wondered when the name Lampard would surface. These Lampards, Rooneys and Gerrards are like Brian Robson was from an earlier generation - great players who think they can walk into management.

We need a seasoned manager, not an ex player/s (admittedly legends) trading on their name hoping to short circuit themselves into PL Management.

As is most likely we will be relegated (although where there is life there's hope) he might not be the worst option. Looking at the frontrunners, none of us want Gerard, Lampard or big Sam. Realistically Marsch is probably favourite and ironically Leeds are in the mire because they can't score goals. Probably second on the list is Espirito Santo, who did excellent work at Wolves but rather nosedived at Spurs. These two are most likely due to experience and availability. Gallardo has won shed loads, with the biggest team in Argentina, would he want his first taste of English football to be relegation? However Rasmus will chuck loads of names into his laptop and the stats will dictate. I'm just hoping the guy that's led Redbridge under 9's undefeated all season isn't the computer choice!

No thanks to either of them. I don't think Marsch is the right choice, nor Gerrard. Although with those two there is the question of bringing them is for the remainder of the season in a kind of s@#t or bust type of scenario. That's the thing, do you go for someone for the remainder of the season on the basis relegation is looking inevitable or go for someone to try and save us yet be around if we were to be relegated? I'd go for Nuni Santos, Gallardo or in my dreams I'd have Pochetino back in a heart beat.

Surely we could poach Vincent Kompany from Burnley and he could bring Nathan Tella back with him as a replacement for Walcott.

Big name players only think of big clubs and will walk as soon as a top club wants them. We remember the last Jones to manage a Saints team, (Dave) was the innocent victim in a legal situation that ended with us getting Glenn Hoddle as a short-term replacement, and was only waiting for Spurs to come and get him. Likewise Pochettino 20 odd years later, whilst dear old 'arry Rednapp jumped from club to club quicker than an Olympic hurdler. Our sojourn with Ronald Koeman was the brief highlight of the Millennium for Saints -until his move to disasterous move to Everton, and returned to Holland a richer man. Even a great player like Lampard couldn't cut it at Everton as manager, and Steven Gerrard is only waiting for Klopp's contract to run out before getting a hero's welcome to Anfield. Mark Hughes was no great shakes at Stoke and was even less impressive with Saints. Good players don't always make good managers. Many of " us oldies " recall that at least half of the 1966 World Cup side had a bash at managing at one time or another but wouldn't want to mention it on their CV afterwards. We are unlikely to get a "British" manager who knows the Prem, and (sadly) the choice seems to lay between those who have already failed at this level and/or a foreign manager who can't speak half-decent English in an interview and will only want to bring in half of his old players at the next window. The Board will need to polish up their crystal ball PDQ if we stand any chance of survival.

Blogs 31 bloggersKnees-up Mother Brown #19 by wessex_exile February, and the U’s enter the most pivotal month of the season. Six games in just four weeks, with four of them against sides also in the bottom six. By March we should be either well clear of danger, or even deeper in the sh*t. With Danny Cowley’s U’s still unbeaten, and looking stronger game on game, I’m sure it’ll be the former, but first we have to do our bit to consign Steve ‘Sour Grapes’ Cotterill’s FGR back to non-league. After our shambolic 5-0 defeat at New Lawn, nothing would give me greater pleasure, even if it meant losing one of my closest awaydays in the process. What’s the excuse going to be today Steve – shocking pitch, faking head injuries, Mexican banditry or some other bit of sour-grapery bullsh*t? Tottenham Hotspur Polls |
