Liverpool Midfielder On Saints Radar
Friday, 2nd Oct 2020 09:52

Saints are said to be after Liverpool's Serbian midfielder Marko Grujic to replace Pierre Emile Hojbjerg, but they have competition from West Ham according to media reports.

Marko Grujic is the forgotten man at Liverpool, signed back in 2016 for £5.1 million, has played only 8 Premier League games for the Red's, the last in 2017/18, spending the second half of that season on loan at Cardiff and has been on loan at Hertha Berlin for the past two season's.

In Germany he was a regular starter and Hertha coach Pal Dardai hailed Grujić as "by far the best midfielder at Hertha Berlin in 20 years"

He is now back at Anfield and played and scored in their League cup win over Lincoln City, but he is way down the pecking order at the club and at 24 he needs regular game time and is set to leave the club.

Saints are said to be interested in signing the 6ft 3 inch central midfielder who has 8 caps for Serbia.

Grujic is one of a number of players Saints are being linked with, but it is hard to work out which are genuine targets and which are just agents trying to put their man in the spotlight.

The Serbian would fit the bill for Saints, but this could either be his agent talking him up, but conversely also an under the radar bid by Saints.

So here we are just over seventy two hours before the international window closes and what have we done so far?

We’ve signed a player who was already playing for us, sold a midfielder and not replaced him, and purchased a centre half with no Premiership experience whatsoever who isn’t fit to play at present.

On the basis of our transfer market dealings to date I’m beginning to think that the 9/1 against us being relegated represents good value.

Why have we not gone in for Ruben Loftus-Cheek and if we have what's the hold up? Most of the lower teams in the Premier League have now brought in new players and still we wait!!!! We have no cover for injuries or suspensions at all.

This was on Sky Sports today.
Southampton have been one of the quietest Premier League sides in the transfer window so far, with Kyle Walker-Peters - who was on loan at St Mary's last season - and Mohammed Salisu the only signings so far.

It leaves them with plenty to do ahead of the deadline, especially in midfield. The club sold Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to Tottenham earlier this summer, while Mario Lemina and Harrison Reed have also departed. Saints were eager to sign Ibrahim Sangare from Toulouse, but the 22-year-old opted for PSV Eindhoven instead. They have also been linked with a loan move for Chelsea's Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

Their defensive capitulation against Tottenham was a reminder of their defensive frailties too. A new centre-back would not go amiss and Hasenhuttl may even be tempted to bring in another striker to provide support for first-choice pairing Danny Ings and Che Adams.
