McCarthy On Liverpool Radar !
Wednesday, 6th Jun 2018 21:58

The Mirror is claiming that Liverpool are considering a bid for Alex McCarthy, but would Liverpool truly take that risk.

David Maddock of the Daily Mirror claims that Liverpool have been priced out of a move for Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak, with the his club demanding £88m for the Slovenian keeper.

But would this please Liverpool fans who are expecting only big money signings into the club as it looks to build on it's Champions League final by finally landing their first ever Premier League title and indeed their first top flight title in almost three decades.

Certainly it would be a big gamble to buy McCarthy who less than six months ago had not played a first team game of any sort for Saints in 15 months and indeed barely played at all in the past four seasons.

At Xmas Saints were in no hurry to offer him a new deal and soldiered on with Forster's confidence in tatters rather than throw in McCarthy, the rumour was that the club would look for a loan keeper in the January window, but events overtook them.

McCarthy has been solid since his introduction to Premier League duty, but in truth his first 14 games were good but not special, although there were odd moments of brilliance along the way.

Certainly when Saints suffered four straight defeats and conceded 3 goals in each game, it looked like the honeymoon period might be over.

But in the final four games of the season it cannot be argued that McCarthy was brilliant and produced several stunning saves and did just what you want your keeper to do in coming off his line and dominating his box.

But is four games enough to make Liverpool take a massive gamble, they have tried to get through before on their attacking prowess with weak central defenders and paid a heavy price, make no bones about it, their keeper cost them the Champions League, their fans are still smarting over this and most would say that both keepers were an accident waiting to happen.

But both are significantly more experienced at the highest levels than McCarthy and Liverpool fans want to see proven quality in their goal, they would not see McCarthy as that.

Knowing this it would be strange for Liverpool to be interested, they have money to spend and their are more proven keepers than McCarthy available without paying £88 million.

A dream scenario for McCarthy going into discussions with Saints. I hope not that he dreams of putting himself in one of the hottest keeper seats in world football and stays calm, cool and collected and signs a(n) (also) lucrative contract extension with us, that he has so definetely earned.

Alex McCarthy. Would I want him to stay ? -YES.
Would it mean he gets the same sort of contract that Forster has ..YES. (sadly) because Saints cannot afford to pay out £6 million a year (for 2 keepers) and have one of them permanently on the bench.

The reality is whether a club is In The Prem. or L1 there will always be clubs with greater ability to pay enormous salaries that we could not match. The use of the term "big clubs doesn't just refer to the size of their arenas, or where they finish in the table, but the financial "whack" which allows them to buy players for £50-100 million...and pay them £100K a week (and more).

IF McCarthy gets a new contract and stays - then we must look to move Forster out .
If AM does move then I hope we get a sizeable fee for him, cry a little and then go back to the Black Box.

Regretably the reality of being one of a dozen or so "smaller clubs " in the Prem. means we must learn to live with that tag - certainly whilst we have a 30K stadium that cant be filled even when the team is playing well and taking part in European competitions.

Maybe it's all part of the deal for us to sign Jack Butland, smart manager that Hughes!

highfield 49.. Butland ????

...that is a bit far-fetched - even with my liking for conspiracy theories, but then again..
I can recall the day that Saints signed Kevin Keegan !
