Totally agree, it’s a negligent approach to defending. Much had been said about our non threatening possession football, but this is just as bad. |
| Forum Thread | Who is our defensive coach? at 09:50 3 Nov 2024
Because once we know who he is, we know who we need to bin off!!!! The setting up for defensive free kicks yesterday was abysmal. Lost count of the number of times Everton lined up with two big lads on the far side of their attacking line and we often only had Flyn Downes up against them. I spotted it early on in the game and yet we let it continue, and if you look at the Beto crossbar header then you will see what I mean (two centre halves on the far side and Flyn Downes isolated). We’ve lost points defending (or not defending) set pieces and it will continue throughout the season unless someone gets a grip. https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1Pxfi86x9ASyLoYS/?mibextid=WC7FNe [Post edited 3 Nov 9:52]

Yesterday against a Championship+ side highlighted a few things for me. Firstly, quite a few haven’t been able to make the step up! Those who are ok; Ramsdale Sugawara THB Bednarek Downes Dibling KWP Those who might: Lallana (showed in patches he still has the brain, but was sometimes physically struggling. A better team would have exploited it more) Taylor (you can get away with an average full back, but I have doubts) Fernandes (played well and tackled back but early days) Ugochokwu (maybe more in hope, but we need an enforcer) Archer (only because he got them on the back foot a few times, but he doesn’t look clinical enough) And then sadly you’ve got: Fraser (a division too far) Smallbone (see above) Aribo (see above) Armstrong (see above) Stewart (reminded me of feeding the giraffes at Marwell and contributed nothing) Diaz (didn’t do anything - has lovely hair though) Cornet (yuk) And then there’s some of the tactics and substitutions. They’re on RM and he was found wanting. Invited pressure on. I’ve mentioned defending corners elsewhere and as others have said we are sloppy. We looked ok in parts against another championship team, but Premier teams will bury us if we don’t learn quickly. Is there enough in the squad to get 17th?? I doubt it but it’s not an impossibility [Post edited 22 Sep 12:52]

| Forum Reply | !!!!!!!! RM OUT !!!!!!!! at 12:37 22 Sep 2024
This post has got some legs, as in the first half they took a short corner to Hutchinson (easily Ipswich’s best player) and only Fraser was there to compete against two of theirs. As a result Hutchinson had all the time in the world to deliver. About ten minutes later, they had another corner set up the same and once again we only had Fraser against two attackers. Same result and Hutchinson put us under pressure. We could see it a mile off, but the coaching staff (and the players failed to recognise the threat!). |

The massive gaps in the middle was down to playing 5 at the back, meaning we sacrificed a midfielder. Downes tried his best, whilst Smalbone was out of his depth. The forwards couldn’t help as they were being told to hug the touchlines. It was obvious to everyone around us, but RM persevered!!!! |

Not good enough, and that’s both manager and players. Wrong set up, once again as a result of shoe horning Stephens in. Five at the back left the midfield weakened as it certainly wasn’t 3 at the back with the full backs pushing on. Our only player of real quality was stifled at left back (and looked so much better when he finally switched to the right). Two centre halves looked ok, but the other (Stephens) offered nothing apart from leading the team out. Downes was ok but both Smallbone and Aribo looked out of their depth and it looked as they both knew it as they were too shy to show themselves when we had the ball. Upfront we had two players hugging the respective touchlines with absolutely no threat through the middle. Forest looked good, but much of that was how we let them look good. Got to go 4-4-2 with KWP at right back and a left footer on the other side (if the ex Burnley player isn’t fancied to start, then why did we buy him?). Midfield has to include the new lad from Chelsea to provide some steel and even then we need someone else in there. We need someone upfront, either giving Armstrong or Brereton a chance (if not, we need something else up top). We set up all wrong and were easily second best in the first half. Marginally better in the second half, but changes were left too late and by then the game was lost. If we made Forest look good, then it’s going to be a very long season!!! |

I’ve changed to Southport (was drinking last night with a family from Stockport!!!). And the outs are all tongue in cheek, some unfashionable, some just gone (like dear old Ray Rearson) and some you dislike. |

| Forum Thread | Liverpool Sold Out at 15:04 17 Feb 2024
See they sold out last night, which is pretty impressive with just under two weeks to go. It did say an initial allocation of 5,500, but not sure if we will get any more??? |
| Forum Reply | Are Saints Giving 800 more tickets to away fans ? at 18:57 25 Jan 2024
I quite agree!! WBA is an example. They’ve only given us 2000 out of a 27,000 capacity which has sold out with over 3 weeks to go. A reciprocal amount for them would be around 2,500. |

It would appear that RM has rectified some of his earlier questionable decisions/tactics, he needs to accept defeat again and stop shoe horning Stephens in. |

I think some of the criticism (and scepticism) were as a result of the absolute mare of the previous season!! Think fans were at their lowest ebb and generally (and rightly) pissed off with everything. I have to say hats off to him as he was worked wonders getting the players to play this way (I had my doubts some of them could manage it). I also think he has been man enough to tweak where required. Yes, we have a decent squad, but think the heart had been ripped out of the club in the previous season. Need to go up in 2nd as not sure I could handle the play offs and wouldn’t fancy West Brom or Leeds over two legs! |

Awful, awful substitutions. Che Adams for Alcaraz was the only one I’d have done being only 1-0 up. Sulemana & A Armstrong were doing ok. Lost our shape and handed the impetus to them. Blame the manager |

We simply haven’t got the players to play the way the manger wants. He should recognise that. Chaos |
