Cambridge- the carabao cup adventure starts here - match thread

It was in all the way until deflected. Bizarre that the ref and linesman both missed it. EDB couldn’t believe it either and complained to the ref vociferously for ages.

Have wondered why he hasn’t been getting much game time, but the answer lies in his performance last night. Poor imo.

Apparently he comes alive when presented with chances in the box……should we and he ever get near it.

Enter stage left and right, Saito and Dembele. We wait with bated breath.

Might be worth giving him a go as the main striker. Our current 3 incumbents are not filling me with much confidence….so far.

Powder dry. But wow, that second half was truly awful.

Did you watch Burnley last night?

Ran Luton ragged with pace and movement. Diminutive in size means nothing if you have pace and trickery. Something we have been sorely lacking.

Get these two in the side with Varane in the middle and a new left back and we’re good to go.

Burnley were seriously over complacent that day and to say we were lucky is something of an understatement. Loved every minute of though 🤣😜

The contrast in styles is bonkers. Luton just could not handle the pace and movement of a really fluid Burnley side. They are everything we are not, we just look ponderous and slow in comparison.

Koloesho on the left wing was just fantastic, never stopped running in both attack and defence but cramped up on 60 minutes, which was hardly surprising after the shift he put in.

I hope our lot watched the game. A timid, passive approach will not win the day.

Burnley will walk this league again based on that performance and we have a long long way to go to get anywhere near that level.

Boinging Baggies deliver Rangers reality check – Report
at 17:45 12 Aug 2024

All very well Colback berating Nardi for going long, but until we have outlets in midfield that are capable of turning and progressing the ball forward, just what is the point?

The current first eleven are no where near a Cifuentes side with Clive having nailed all the issues in his report. Happy to live with a month of mediocrity until reinforcements arrive and the likes of Smyth and Colback move to the bench where they belong.

Very odd performance from Celar though, but patience will be needed and hopefully he will get the service he needs from Chair and Dembele as, apparently, he comes alive in the box when given a sniff of a chance. Time will tell.

Isn’t it standard procedure to wait until the completion of the first ten games before everyone loses their collective shit?

Keep the powder dry chaps… the cavalry are on their way. Again.

Positives from today….

No chance any sooner….like next week?

With Luton and Sheffield Utd coming up, it’s looking a lot like 3 points from 12, providing we can overcome the might of Rooney’s Sunday league outfit.

How we could and should set up with a more offensive approach:
Nardi
Dunne Cook JCS Pal
Field
Dembele Varane Anderson Chair
Celar

Two holding midfielders leaves only Anderson trying to run offensive midfield with little outlet if wingers are closed down. Need more movement.

Celar and Kolli

Agree, there is a good player in Kolli. Needs a full season playing before he really finds his groove, but the potential is definitely there.

Daft to write Celar off after his first game and home debut. We are still very much a work in progress and probably won’t gel until mid season.

Outclassed in pretty much every department.

Celar had no service but had zero impact on the game. No better than Dykes on first impressions. Need to see how clinical he is in front of goal should he ever get a goal scoring opportunity.

Field and Colback look ponderous together. Varane will replace Colback and not a moment too soon.

Need chair back and Dembele out on the right. I like Smythe, but he’s not championship quality.

West Brom looked very strong and well drilled. We have a long way to go but are moving in the right direction.

QPR bolster midfield with Varane capture – Signing
at 15:07 5 Aug 2024

Agree with the EDB comparison from the clips seen on YT. Seems to me we have two purely defensive midfielders ( Field and Colback) with the former two having the ability to carry the ball and find a forward pass. As such we should be playing with one of each type unless we are looking to see a game out.

Also agree on the “scanning” comment. The best players in the world excel at this skill and it is often why they appear to have so much time on the ball as they know exactly what is going on around them.

As for replacing Willock, rumour has it we are sniffing around Josh Bowler after Forest are claimed to have sanctioned another loan move.

Tactics question
at 09:52 4 Aug 2024

Our direct option usually involves Cook hitting it to the oppo’ corner flag and the berating Smythe for not chasing it.

We need to be able to mix it up , but we still don’t appear to have everyone working on the same page. Smythe and Kolli barely saw the ball in the first off and need to be more mobile by dropping deeper or inside to provide an option.

Suspect it’s going to be a tough few weeks until Chair is back and Varane has bedded in.

Odd that Dixon-Bonner doesn’t get more starts, Field and Colback together does not work. Neither are creative and lack the ability to turn quickly a progress the ball through the transitions.

Varane, when he turns up, will need to hit the ground running, ideally in the direction of the opponents penalty box and not ours.

The lack of creativity without Chair and a half arsed Willock was stark. Those two have made us tick for the last four seasons. We looked blunt without them.

Lloyd made a lot of mistakes and shouldn’t be a starter, but there is potential there. Kolli should be starting in Chairs absence as his back injury is apparently worse than initially expected.

The inability of Colback and Field to turn with the ball frustrated me the most. Didn’t even look behind them before playing the ball back on most occasions.

Well that was worryingly piss poor.

Poor performances from Colback, Field, Pall, Frey and Lloyd and the rest not much better.

Disjointed, slow and low on quality. What have they been working on all summer?

For me, ditching Dozzell was the moment the tide turned and we have been on a journey of redemption ever since.

The work done to clear the detritus throughout the summer and the sensible, measured approach to recruitment absolutely stinks of competence and alignment of structure and strategy.

This means only one thing. 16th place awaits. Enjoy the ride.

Defo. Liking the look of him. Quick, on the front foot, darts in behind, brave. Everything Dykes isn’t (apart from brave perhaps).

Everything going to plan. Unbelievable really.
