International Rugby league at Spotland, between two nobody teams on a Monday night at £20. No thank you.

Earlier in the Summer I watched Wigan versus Leeds in the Challenge Cup for £20 at Huddersfield and in a good seat. No wonder they cannot sell tickets for the same price watching Ireland play Fiji or whoever it is. Many of these players cannot/could not get into a Super League side.

Why?

Have you ever watched a game of Rugby League or Rugby Union?

I agree Tazzy, rugby players are just fat blokes who were useless at football at school.

the ticket prices sum up the naivety of those responsible for bringing the match to Spotland. There was genuine belief that hosting a RL World Cup game at Spotland (one of the preliminaries before the Australia v NZ final) would see the stadium packed and reinvigorate a love of RL within the town. If they struggle to get beyond 100 paying punters for a league game (after season tickets), they've no chance for a game involving two sides containing players that no one but the obsessive die hards will have heard of. I'm a RL fan and there's no chance at all of me watching this.

I can only hope that there is no financial implication for the football club via the Stadium Company in hosting this game.

Your best post ever, Taz.

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

Come on Col I'm pretty sure that the people of Rochdale's famous 'Little Fiji' district will turn out in full force for the fixture.

You don't see many of them at Spotland.

That`s cos he`s only fought bums, blokes who are stuffed after half a dozen rounds and he wouldn`t last five minutes against the likes of Shane Cameron or David Tua.

Well,it`s pretty obvious the round ball followers won`t be going to any league games at Spotland ever,so it wouldn`t matter if they let people in for free, they still wouldn`t darken the gates. Is twenty quid excessive over there? I guess it is if you`re not an afficionado, but bet it`s still cheaper than spending the same amount of time in the boozer with your missus and a couple of mates. For those who love their league they might give it a go even if both sides could hardly be called top liners, though no doubt the Fijians will have some first team NRL and Super League players in their side. It`s just a game that`s part of a tournament that we all know will be an Australia/NZ,or Australia/England final, but for some they might say in later years,"Yes,I went to a game in Rochdale that was part of the 2013 Rugby League World Cup".

Agreed. But would you take a punch from him?
Top notch athlete, pity his agent has made him into such a mercenary.

I have been saying since the application that the deal struck should be transparent. Each applicant had to make a financial guarantee to the organisers. We do not know what that guarantee was and who is on the hook for it (though I strongly suspect its Rochdale taxpayers). The organisers must have thought how the hell are we going to sell Ireland v Fiji on a Monday night - I know - get Rochdale to host it!

As for the Fijian community I wonder if there will be any 'special arrangments' for their tickets? Id love to see the entire arrangements independently audited.

I have bought a ticket for the double header semi finals at Wembley and the final at Old Trafford for 25 quid each, oh and they threw in a world cup beanie for free!

No interest in watching nobodies (or more to the point, players who aren't good enpough to play for Eng?aus/NZ but find some long lost roots to qualify for these teams). If you bother to follow the build up you will probably find that these teams have to wait to name their squads until after England/Australia/New Zealnad name theirs in order to be able to select the leftovers.

Pugwash got the prices wrong.

Many apologies folks!

I was comletely wrong about the prices, those I quoted were only for the main stand. Pearl St tickets are £15 and £7.50 and Sandy Lane terraced tickets are £10 and £5.00. The Willbuts St stand is not quoted as yet and will probably be used only if the other tickets sales are suggesting it's necassary

Yes,I agree with your comments about these nobody countries who have to rummage through ancestry.com in order to field a team, but that`s because they call it the "RL World Cup" when we know there`s only half a dozen countries at most who actually play the game in a competetive way. My point is that to me,it`s an honour for Spotland Stadium to be hosting a game, though I do concede that Fiji v Ireland is hardly a headline fixture. But then again,I`m sure both teams will be going all out to win and I can recall quite a few games in the last World Cup,out here in Australia, that produced cracking games amongst the minnows, and as a League fan,I`d certainly be going along.
