I'm not so sure, Yes many keepers play on until they are 40 but Shilts and Seaman were not as good in their late 30's as they were in their mid or early 30's.

I'm sorry how can you reject Given? By far one of the best keepers in the country and you want to reject him for Foster who had a nightmare of a game against us.Foster is always prone to mistakes. |
Cerny is old enough and I don't see signing a 37 year old the way forward.
Foster is a better age and I just want to see a taller keeper. Don't get me wrong Given is the best shot stopper out there but foster isn't too shabby either.
You are judging him on 1 game against us? I'd like to look at his season where he has been very good. His replacement against arsenal on the last game of the season cost them all 3 pts, with foster both goals wouldn't of gone in. [Post edited 1 Jan 1970 1:00]

Hennessey is decent enough, but he's out for the next 6 months at least with a damaged cruciate ligament.
Sadly for Paddy, he just couldn't replicate hisChampionship winning form whether due to the better standard or his injuries i'm not sure.
I'd take any of the keeper mentioned over him - Given, Robinson, Green, Foster. |

Hughes doesn't rate Paddy. Must say I've been really disappointed with Paddy this season and now understand why he has never been signed by an established premier league club.
Given is quality. Can't stand Green, I always get the feeling that he'll at some point during a match drop a clanger. |

Hughes played Paddy in front of Cerny every game that Paddy was fit. when Paddy was injured Cerny came in and did a good job. However, we ended the season with a string of clean sheets and Paddy in goal.
If Hughes was going to bring in a new goalie, why would he have given Cerny a new contract. He obviously rates Paddy higher than Cerny, so if you think we are getting a new goalie, you have to believe that he thinks we can afford to have Paddy as our #2 and Cerny as our #3 goalie. That doesn't really make any sense.
The fact that Cerny just signed a new contract makes me think that he isn't bringin is anyone new between the sticks |  |

Given would be a superb signing. solid keeper, prob earned villa a fair few points this season. As a keeper myself I find it difficult to watch Paddy at times this season, especially the dzeko header the other week, how can you head a corner in from 2 yards without the keeper claiming it?
He had a great season last year, unfortunately i don't think he has the ability to take us to the next level. |  | | |

Agree Given is top goalie but example of Dzecko goal would probably have happened exactly the same with him there as no more dominant on crosses than Kenny.

Very sorry, no offence meant mate, substitute for a more appropriate word, perhaps butterfingers. It was just such a long way to travel to watch such an apalling error. It cost me about 1000 quid as well as the rest of it. I still can't fathom how a pro keeper could let that in. [Post edited 1 Jan 1970 1:00]

As much as I rate Given very highly as one of the best keepers in the country, he isn't THE best. That would have to be Joe Hart who is currently an exceptional keeper who still has his best years ahead of him.
Out of all the names of keepers being bandied about (and assuming we're on the look out for one which as Dylan rightly says isn't a certainty anyway!), I would go for Al-Habsi. Absolute quality keeper who has probably done more than most to keep Wigan in the Prem for the last 2 years. His (quality) saves on a very regular and consistant basis must've gained Wigan countless points. Tall, commanding and very agile.
