Warnock Sacking 18:50 - May 21 with 2412 views | gueRRilla | Apologies if this is dredging up old ground but I hadn't noticed a thread on here about it. I was listening to the QPR podcast and they had a discussion about whether or not it was right to sack Warnock. At the time I was livid that he'd been kicked out given all the mitigating circumstances, but looking back now I think it was the right decision. The team were playing awfully, he appeared to have lost the dressing room, and I doubt he could have brought in the same quality of players as MH has. Add to that, that we did actually beat the drop despite red cards, injuries and ghost goals, and I think MH has done a pretty decent job. Anyway, thoughts/opinions?

Warnock Sacking on 18:58 - May 21 with 1957 views | yankranger | At the time I was against it. Though we were playing bad it seemed a bit premature and unfair after he had just gotten us up. Looking back on it now it was a hard but correct decision by TF. Something had to be done and if he truly lost the dressing room, that is the point of no return.
Warnock Sacking on 19:12 - May 21 with 1912 views | WeaverQPR | Right decision made at the right time you only have to look at the mess Wolves got themselves into by leaving it late. Like Warnock a grateful for Championship winning season but we were facking abysmal towards the end. Turning up at grounds and going through the motions and then listening to him spout off over how far weve come blah blah blah. Warnock was out of his depth with players he couldnt coach, the old school 'up and at em' tactics won't wash with players who have played at the top for a decade. Thought Hughes would of had us over the line earlier but we done it the hard way instead. Bright future with this set up.

I suppose regardless of whether NW would have kept us up or not, I have to consider that if you were to ask people before any rumours of the eventual sacking came out whether for the medium and long term would you prefer NW or Mark Hughes, then I for one would have probably gone with MH. If we had stuck with NW in Jan and given him the chance, then would another premier league club now have him or about to hire him ahead of us, there appears to be a few jobs up for grabs at the moment! Perhaps it was the right hire at the right time for the medium and long term.

Warnock Sacking on 19:28 - May 21 with 1848 views | QPR1882 | Said my bit at the time so no point dragging out all the reasons again, but it was the best thing we did getting rid and should have done it sooner.
Warnock Sacking on 19:32 - May 21 with 1827 views | RangersAreBack | At the time I thought we didn't do it early enough and I still feel that way having stayed up by the skin of our teeth. Nothing against NW but he's a championship manager and was perfect for our promotion charge. When you get promoted you look to improve the squad so why not also improve the management if you feel they're not up to it. There's no room for sentimentality when making tough decisions - just ask Liverpool and King Kenny.
Warnock Sacking on 19:42 - May 21 with 1795 views | Neil_SI | This is a tough one and we have the benefit of hindsight now that we know the outcome, which was favourable for us. I think we took a colossal risk doing what we did and it so very nearly backfired on us and I still feel that Neil Warnock deserved the season. I personally think he would have got over that rocky patch in January and don't think there would have been too much difference in terms of the amount of points we would have ended up with in the end. He probably would have won and lost different games, but it may have been a touch more or a touch less either way. When you look at Warnock's age, it was obvious that he was a short-term measure, so he would have had to have been replaced at some point. I agree with that much, but I'm not sure the timing was right on this occasion and I think no matter how decent a manager Mark Hughes turns out to be, we had a lot of luck and got away with survival by the skin of our teeth. If you look at it this way - when Warnock was in charge, we probably had two camps in the squad, the old guard who were loyal to Warnock, and he new guard led by Joey Barton. Then when Hughes came in, a third camp was added, which was the new signings (or the foreign lads) and that contributed to the early gelling and getting to know you type of problems. It's remarkable we survived and an astonishing achievement in the end, but I'm not sure if there really was a lot of nous behind it in terms of Hughes' tactics or training methords (the latter of which was a risk to introduce and change to radically in terms of intensity mid-season). My eyes saw our Championship players stepping up to the plate and fighting for their lives and their careers and ultimately that's what pulled us through and it was their work with the new Hughes players that did the trick. But survival leaves us in a much better position. It's accelerated Hughes into not needing to go through what he's just gone through. He now knows the place, knows what's in the building and now has the whole of pre-season to prepare and plan properly. The new signings will no longer need to gel, so they've got past that stage already and suddenly everything looks a lot brighter and healthier all round. Phew, is all I can say...I never really felt Hughes was cut out for the type of challenge we threw him into and I'm still not sure he is, but thankfully he got through it and now we are in a position where the status and position of the club suits him and his style a lot more.
Warnock Sacking on 20:59 - May 21 with 1651 views | Gloucs_R | Would Zamora, Cisse, Diakite and Taiwo have signed for NW? I doubt it. All played a big part in us staying up, they were the quality we needed. I couldnt see a Warnock team winning the last 5 home games and beating the likes of Liverpool, Spurs and Arsenal either. No doubt we would have lost all 5 but still heard the famour phrase "its good to be here" Saying that, I am very thankful for what he did and where he took us.

Warnock Sacking on 22:17 - May 21 with 1522 views | superhooper1972 | Well Mr Warnock would always be welcome round my house for a cup of tea and a slice or two of victoria sponge cake, but in truth now, the board probably made the right call, i will always be gratefull though, he steadied a ship that had to many captains on the bridge, he become the sole captain steered us out of rocky ground then took us to a place we all dreamed of, like others have said, i think the prem sees him just a bit out of his depth. Sorry for the naval analogy

With the squad he had at his disposal you could be right, but with 20 million pounds worth of re-inforcements that Hughes had i've a feeling we'd have stayed up long before the city game. As much as i like MH for bringing in some quality players, his record has been bloody awful except for a few tough home wins towards the end of the season. We lost yet another away game and only stayed up because of an incompetant refereeing performance at Stoke ataf. Ps NW gave us the best season we've had in over 20 years,MH made very hard work of keeping us up with a huge array of talent at his disposal.

Yeah i know all about that but i'm sick of this MH love in when in truth he didn't do any better than NW pound for pound. I really like MH but am not yet convinced that he's as good a manager as others believe.
Warnock Sacking on 22:55 - May 21 with 1424 views | PeterHucker | we'll never know what might've happened if Warnock had stayed, whether we would've stayed up or not. But I hope that fans always remember what he did for us. He transformed the direction the whole club was heading in over 18 months or so. A remarkable achievement and I can't think of any manager we've ever had who's achieved such a lot in such a short time.

You just cannot use that as evidence to back up points results as MH spent a fortune in January. That amount of transfer money could have transformed our season under NW.

True. But he also never had Faurlin and didn't see much of Helguson.

Warnock Sacking on 01:29 - May 22 with 1285 views | aussiehoop | Right decision at the right time in my eyes. I also don't think we'd have been able to put together the back room set-up we currently have with Warnock. Hughes will be instrumental in dragging Rangers out of the doldrums (Academy, scouting, training, planning) and I honestly can't wait.
Warnock Sacking on 02:43 - May 22 with 1269 views | mylot50years | One point away since MH took over much the same as he done at his previous clubs on the road our home support was the thing that got us over the line in the end NW deserved more time we would have been safe before the last game with him in charge MH vastly overrated mostly by himself Needs to improve BIG TIME next season
Warnock Sacking on 07:05 - May 22 with 1232 views | ElHoop | I think back to the games against MKD and the away game in particular and the crowd seemed to have lost patience with Warnock. That's the game that made the board sack him. If the crowd had been behind him and Faurlin hadn't have got injured and we had a couple more points then he'd probably have survived, but, as they say, if my aunt had bollocks she'd be my uncle. It's really hard to find centre backs and would Warnock have found one to keep us up? Maybe but I doubt it. He certainly didn't look like finding Clint Hill to do the job. Would he have signed Cisse or someone better? We'll never know. I tend to think that Hughes's reputation got us one or two players who wouldn't have signed for Warnock. On balance, it was more likely than not the right thing to do. I think that Hughes is a good manager and tha the will prove this next season. I also think that Warnock did a fantastic job in the circumstances evidenced by 'The 4 Year Plan'. As with most things relating to QPR, it's complicated, but if I had their money and was investing it in QPR then I'd have gone for Hughes too. [Post edited 1 Jan 1970 1:00]

Warnock Sacking on 08:00 - May 22 with 1182 views | Gloucs_R | Back to my point, NW couldnt have attracted players like Cisse and Zamora and wouldnt have even known who Diakite and Taiwo were! He also never played Hill as CB....what a big mistake that was! [Post edited 1 Jan 1970 1:00]

Warnock Sacking on 08:10 - May 22 with 1170 views | Jamie | Personally think NW would have kept us up, BUT this doesnt detract from the fact that MH deserves plenty of credit for getting the job done. As for Zamora & Cisse, we were linked with Zamora long before MH took over, and Zamora joined us because he couldnt stay at Fulham. He fell out with Jol big time and wouldve been dropped from their 25 man squad had he not left. Would NW have signed Cisse? Probably not as Yakubu was one of his top targets in January.
Warnock Sacking on 09:10 - May 22 with 1108 views | adhoc_qpr | I think the transfer window did for Warnock - i mean having seen SWP and Barton's performances would you have trusted NW with your cash again? The dire performances of Macheda in Warnock's last game probably didn't inspire confidence either. Maybe a thumping win versus MK Dons would have earned him a stay of execution, but i think they probably timed the change as well as can be expected. In terms of points Hughes got 20pts in his 19 games and Warnock got 17pts in 19 games - so not much difference, but interestingly we would have gone down had we got 17 pts in the second half of the season.

I always presumed Barton was the player Warnock was talking about when he said Fernandes had suggested signing a player that 'would lead to his own chapter in my book' in which case Fernandes offered Barton to Warnock rather than vice versa. There were also rumours in January that Fernandes vetoes signing Yakubu as he wanted higher profile players signed. Warnock wrote after his sacking that he heard over Xmas that the club was talking to other managers so it was simply a matter of time before he went. The club had decided he had to go and so they did it at the right time - start of a transfer window giving Hughes time to decide what he needed.
