The Celtic MD was saying this morning that they don't need Rangers to be successful - Hmmmm... I think you may find you are wrong there old chap.
The only interest in that league is the old firm competing against each other and that is now minimal at best. Without 2 strong clubs the league will find sponsorship deals and tv money shrinking to near nothing.

The fact is it's like having Liverpool and Man United playing in League one every year in terms of the other sides around them.
TV Sponsors etc basically lost interest years ago and they can't keep up with other British or European sides.
The curious thing is they both have massive fan bases but that alone doesn't seem to help.
I had to laugh at Celtic claiming they didn't need Rangers - surely they realise that without Rangers as a counter balance the last remaining vestige of interest will die???... |  | | |

Irrelevant unless you are racking up that debt to the inland revenue.
More important question is, why do the revenue allow clubs to build up all these unpaid taxes before finally deciding to issue formal proceedings?
This has to be the largest amount owed before action is taken is it not? They issued winding up orders for 1o0k or less ffs!!!!

This all comes back to EBTs, which were set up to allow small, co-op type companies to put aside a small amount of their wages into a trust to help employee benefits, etc. Then accountants spotted their usefulness and started using them for their rich clients. That's why virtually every club, in every sport, in this country has been using this as a form of tax evasion. Clive's Rugby league club is facing a million quid or so back payment I believe. A couple of years ago HMRC was given more staff to target this particular thing.
Incidentally, it's believed that Arsenal were given a £300million bill by HMRC for back taxes and negotiated it down to £10million. Utterly disgraceful. [Post edited 1 Jan 1970 1:00]

Do you know if this is about image rights payments, or is it something different? I believe HMRC lost some cases in the courts against Arsenal, so they didn't negotiate it all away, they just couldn't enforce it. I believe United had a provision of about £6m for back payments at the time of their bond issue a couple of years back Also Joey Barton's image was worth £675,000 pa, even before Twitter.

At last, some good news.
I hope it's just the start of the collapse of Professional Football as we know it, and that the Clubs are dragged kicking and screaming into the financial reality of the world in 2012.
Players 'earning' anything up to 250k a week, yet even at a Club such as ours, supporters pick and choose their matches due to financial constraints.
Man Utd play Liverpool in a Stadium half way round the world, with half the Stadium full of 'local' Man Utd supporters, the other half 'local' Liverpool supporters.
Madness.
Whatever happened to the working mans game?

There are suspicions that the new owner there has got himself to the top of the creditors list to the tune of £28m. The football creditors' rule doesn't apply up there.
