Boston Match Thread 17:05 - Jan 28 with 11727 viewsDelboy

I must admit that I am really looking forward to this game in the hope of seeing us carry on the fine form we showed on Saturday. Granted the opposition is different and somewhat buoyed by their own victory over the weekend but I am hopeful we can follow up and take advantage of a series of fixtures which could see us spring up the league over the next month. I don't expect Boston to capitulate easily and we do need to be at it from the beginning to prove to any doubters that we are capable of putting together back to back quality performances. One word of caution however based on the goal we conceded at Barnet, its worth noting that Boston also tend to rely on a long throw specialist who is inclined to bomb the goalmouth. Liam Hogan and Sam Waller beware.

There most certainly is an argument for a Trust EGM because their meandering is helping nobody, either the club or supporters.

Would there be enough Trust members on here who would support calling an EGM?

If they have to excavate that corner like the centre circle then I cannot see it being ready for the owdham game. They need to make an announcement today re the plan of action. If we progress in the F.A. Trophy we may have a home tie in the Quarter Finals.  We still have to play Wolves u21s with potentially at least one further tie in that competition possibly at home depending on the draw. I foresee that we could be playing 2 midweek home league matches to catch up if we have any further postponements. And that will not aid the attempts to compete in the play-offs.

Not happy at all. As an exile I bought my match pass earlier to watch the game live on DAZN.

FYI - I got a refund from DAZN. Go on the chat in the app and ask to speak to an advisor

Firstly an apology to Boston, The players and team management, the club officials and the supporters. Yesterday was a new low.

The original fixture was postponed after mild temperatures and hardly any rain. I did not think it could get any worse than the original postponement and then I hear the news at 6pm last night (In disbelief) driving to Spotland.

The club needs to find the immediate short term solution and fast. Yes it might cost but what is the alternative?. Get to season end and then do the pitch renovations and drainage properly and that might be very expensive.

A real test for Cameron Ogden.

This was a total Shambles right from the moment no pitch inspection was tweeted.

I'd suggest that the social media post mentioned was the worst point of a shambolic day. It set the wheels in motion to a disastrous evening.

Anyone who's watched the past couple of games has seen how slow and heavy much of the pitch is. It's a fact of living in the Pennine foothills during winter. Some areas are far worse than others, and any one of us could have kicked a ball round that pitch yesterday morning and known that a couple of spots are that bad, there could be a risk to the fixture.

How then did that hugely confident post get sent out? Whoever signed that bit of comms off, cost travelling supporters thousands. Has it got to the point where the club is taking a punt at getting a match on? Can trust the current set up to get any fixtures to go ahead if typical winter weather continues?

It's also got to 3.20pm the following day and still no sign of an explanation or apology communicated by the club. Really poor. What must Boston United and their fans think of that?

Absolutely baffling that no further communication has been released by 3.30pm the following day.

I'm all out of patience with the shambolic running of the football club under Simon Gauge and he needs now to step aside.
I am still grateful to him and the others who came in following the ousting of Bottomley but he was on thin ice with me when threatened to shut the club if he didn't get his own way at the egm/agm.
Before the Woking home game I went into the club shop and there was Simon with Sir Peter, Cameron Ogden and his son/nephew. I went up to Sir Peter, shook his hand and thanked him for saving the club, it was clear that Simon did not want any fans talking to Sir Peter and tried to usher him away as quickly as possible.
He now treats the fans with disdain and must go.
As D'alien said maybe this last debacle will be the catalyst for the change required at the club. What we need is a professional CEO at the club with a football background as long as Simon remains we will not move forward.
As an aside what is Andy Duff doing surely he must be reporting back to the Ogden's?
Oh and get someone else in charge of comms the response to last night is shocking.

Sorry to sound like an apologist but, other than vastly improved communication from the start about the pitch, what else could have been done? Especially prior to the Ogden family takeover and also without knowing the information given at the start of the season was incorrect.

Letter from Boston circulating on Facebook.

Asking for £2,800 reimbursement for coaches, a review of the refund policy, a reminder that without supporters there is no club.

That last line ought to resonate with our elected representative, it it won't.

Well done, Boston, on your timely lesson in putting supporters first.

Your post reflects some of my views SX. I don't think what has gone on with the pitch was predictable given the money spent in the summer, but its the aftermath that worries me. The pitch needs work, but the fixture list says that there is now little time to undertake that work , I believe that the Dryjecting need 5 rain-free days so it seems that is not about to happen... And obviously there is little point in digging up the pitch if the drains are simply not taking any water away.
I have wondered if we need a Stadium Manager to be installed with a brief covering matchdays, pitch and infrastructure? I think probably George Delves does some of this but he also has the footballing contracts etc. to worry about plus probably, a load of other stuff, he can hardly be expected to be a groundsman as well, and postponements must be the bane of everyone's lives.
The Directors are unpaid and indeed have paid to be Directors so they can't be held responsible for every cold pie and warm pint, but clearly the pitch issue is now in front of them and needs decisions to be made. So, on what basis can they make a decision when the root cause of the problem is almost impossible to cure even assuming the money to do so is available? Do they find an alternative venue for a few games and rebuild the pitch now? Do they hope for fine weather and that Dryjecting will work? Do they try and do a partial fix which may or may not work and then spend even more money over the summer? There is no obvious simple solution.
Maybe they need to dig up some of the running track in front of the main stand a see if there really is a drain there that runs out to the Sandy Lane main drain and test to see if it is blocked, beyond that, I don't envy the position the Board are in. Damned if they do, damned if they don't....Such a shame when recent results have been what we have been crying out for...

A comprehensive statement that is welcomed. The gesture helpings towards Boston fans travel is excellent

On the subject of further work to help with the problem areas, there’s mention why those areas did not warrant the same treatment as that carried out on the centre circle. Noting the phrase “financial cost becomes prohibitive”.

Also worth noting the previous pitch statement which discussed the use of covers and which were the “only” sort that would actually improve the situation:
https://rochdaleafc.co.uk/pitch-update-5/

Today’s statement notes we are now purchasing “enhanced pitch covers”.

Good article especially the bit about committing to keeping the fans informed of plans and progress. We will see if anything improves but I'll believe it when I see it.

Whilst welcome, it changes nothing fundamental about how the club is being run. That remains the same as it was before the disappointment of yesterday evening, and whilst it's only natural that fans will express their anger on here, it shouldn't take such an event to understand that nothing will change until we have new leadership in the boardroom

It’s the same old same old. Reactive when the sh*t hits the fan, rather than proactive because the board recognise and understand the issues. Like you SX, I’ll believe it when I see it. The football club is going nowhere with SG in charge.
