offside but played onside 16:24 - Jan 14 with 498 viewssledger

can any referees or experts clear this up for me.This is one incident which happens all the time,it involved harry maguire who touched a through pass to a player in an offside position thus potentially in the eyes of the law played him onside although on this occasion it wasnt deemed onside on many occasions it is.My argument is that the linesman flags if the player is in an offside position the moment it leaves the passers foot therfore the ball is dead from that moment on so why the contraversy over the defender touching it as hes entitled to,l just dont get it.

The main rule here is that if Southampton are attacking, then it will be given offside.

It's one of those subjective things.

If Maguire had missed the ball completely = offside

If he tried to reach the ball but failed to control it = offside

If the ball was played "slowly" from a distance and he scuffed it into the feet of the forward = onside.

my issue is the lino gives offside from when the ball is played forward, nothing is subjective after that its fact,we really know how to complicate simple rules

Just standing in an offside position when the ball is played isn't an offence so isn't flagged. You often see players not going for a ball because they know they would be pulled up for offside if they did.

“A player in an offside position at the moment the ball is played or touched* by a team-mate is only penalised on becoming involved in active play” (LOTG 11.2)

Or surely "interfering with play" ie - blocking the keepers view of the ball or something.

But I can see where Sledger is coming from. In that particular instance I would have said it was offside cos I believe he was when the ball was initially kicked despite McGuire getting in the way?

On another point for those who understand the Laws Of The Game:
is the non direct free kick for obstruction now a thing of the past
Likewise handball against 'keepers when kicking out of hand when their feet and the ball are outside the penalty area
