I have to hold my hand up too, as I thought we were a lost cause and have been critical of some of the recent signings. However, Dembele and Saito, albeit a small sample size, could both become real game changers for this team, given time.

It’s at this moment I will refer back to my post on the Cambridge match thread.
I think he’s trying to play his style with our no. 10 pushed further forward, only one player truly sitting in defensive midfield, and inverted full backs. Laudable. But I don’t think we’re ready. We’re not clicking. Execution and positioning and fitness all a bit off.
As I said after Tuesday’s match, I would have played Colback, Field AND Varane today to put some stodge in there, try to kill/calm the game and make it very hard for Sheff Utd.
We need to build from a base of being hard to score against (like last season with him) not try to play the beautiful game when we’re off. |

Well, a lot of things changed so not entirely valid.
We were much better after Anderson went off and then with Varane.
When Celar came on, it was basically a 442, so a shape change. And in a 442 your full backs are playing more flat and less inverted.
So it was a different system that kept more players deep. [Post edited 17 Aug 19:47]

* I am happy about the result. Sounds like s belting second half.
* It seems that (whisper it quietly) this season's signings might be better than the usual Bruno Peroni types.

Only managed to catch the last ten minutes. Paal got skinned about four times very easily. Hopefully he was better throughout the rest of the game.

I liked Varane. I thought as the parachuters resorted to beating up on QPR especially KDem. In the first half they got all the calls. But starting with the push on Paal, all of a sudden calls came QPRs way. Also, the higher powers took DJ out and Smythe made a dramatic difference playing as a RW not a midfielder. Dembele showed that #10 we have been crying for able to run the ball out of midfield. Saito was also a dramatic impact on the Leftside.

I think Lyndon's slightly older missus has got him into Friends over the summer.
As a result he has now modelled both his game and his hair style on Monica, and will be more ruthlessly efficient in front of goal from now on.

Tried to sit and watch on a dodgy feed whilst all the family round for wife’s birthday drinks and food so didn’t watch it thoroughly but I thought we just looked completely disjointed in the first half . Like how we’ve been since we came back in the summer really . We just seem set up wrong for the players we have to choose from.
Second half was a huge transformation. Aided by Sheffield Utd become all Billy big bollocks and thinking it was won. But credit to the players for digging in and giving it a right go.
Dembélé looks a class above and impressed with Saito , small but tough physically .
Varane will be ok but that midfield needs some real work. They look all over the place no matter who plays there . That’s why I think maybe a change of formation will come .
Colback?
Well I think he got what he had wanted since they returned from their holiday’s. Bad attitude , bad team player and bad role model for the likes of Tuck, Bennis and Varane.
I’d get rid of it was up to me. But we can’t for now .
Well done to Lyndon also. Must be hard being 3rd choice all of a sudden but took it well.
Might get his move after all ?
Feels like a win and I hope we build on this next Saturday .

I’m not overreacting after this as a) it’s still early doors and b) as we’ve been reminded poignantly, there are far more important things — but this still still been an abject performance with almost no-one out there apart from Dembélé seeming to have an idea what they should be doing.

tbf je ne regrette rien - I had a lovely nap which was far more enjoyable than the first half. Really great to read back through the second half comments in the thread and see that Saito sounded just as exciting as Dembélé and it seems that you could say we were the better team in the latter stages.
What an absolute fkn cretin Colback is though, to keep in the ref's ear after already getting booked for backchat. It doesn't matter if the ref's allowing from the other team - just keep your bloody mouth shut |  |

Midfield and right back was the problem first half, IMHO Varane is going to need some time (and stay on his feet!). When the real Sam Field turned up and Colback came on (until his brain fart) grabbed hold of midfield with Dembele in the 10 really made a difference and turned the tide.
