There's an increasing amount of posters talking about 'Duffball'. Interestingly, most of them seem to be die-hard supporters of Russell Martin, trying to spin a narrative that Duff (a) has only one style of football and (b) it's a reversion to the Monk/Cooper style of football (what we might call the Roundhead approach, as opposed to the Cavalier style of Martinez/Laudrup/Potter and (supposedly) Martin).

I actually think it was fair to describe Martin's approach as 'Martinball' as the man himself said that there would only be one way of playing under his watch, and that was the way Man City play under Guardiola.

Trying to pigeonhole Duff on the strength of one friendly is, IMO, just a lame attempt to undermine confidence in him before the season has even begun. Good managers adapt their tactics and strategy according to the strengths of the players in their squad and the opposition they face - between and during games. That's not Duffball, it's Football.

Must say WR I totally agree with you.
Get behind the manager, staff and players, then get behind whoever comes next.
As you say Bradley was the exception that proves the rule.

I hate to disagree but if a manager is visibly failing to deliver the goods, I don’t believe supporters have any duty to continue slavishly cheering them on. If anything, I would argue that we have a moral duty to show how we feel about them so the Board understand supporter sentiment and this helps inform their thinking on whether to hang on to them or let them go.

When Laudrup lost interest, the majority of supporters let their feelings be known and he went.
When Monk’s team went into freefall, the same thing happened.
When Bradley was appointed and had a disastrous run of results, supporter pressure undoubtedly played a part in the owners’ decision to sack him.
With Clement, we were arguably too tolerant for far too long.

I would certainly accept that we should not rush to judgement on managers, and I think on the whole we are pretty good at that. Sousa got a whole season of delivering dire football with barely a murmur from supporters. Cooper has been more maligned since he left than I ever remember him being when he was our manager. And Martin may have got shredded on here and on Phil’s site, but in the stadiums his critics were models of self-restraint for the most part.

It maybe that some of our players are finding their way back to play in their natural positions.
I had no real opinion on Martin playing his style in the early days.
Same will go for Duff. In saying that I didn't watch the Oxford game. So won't swayed by other opinions.
Let's wait and see.

It was a pretty dire performance but as other posters have said it was the first friendly played in public, the team will take time to get used to the new manager's prefered playing style, and the starting line-up will likely change a lot between now and the end of the transfer window (new GK, new LB/LWB, probably new striker to replace Piroe). Way too early to be judging this manager, let alone trying to put him in a box marked 'Duffball'.

Not sure who wasn’t playing in their natural positions!

It was a touch of sarcasm based on a number players playing out position last season.

I was and am of the opinion the outgoing coach would leave a bad legacy .
IMO,he has in no way developed any player and has frozen the careers of some of reasons only he knows.
I note he bemoans dumb goals conceded by his new team already .
Go£ help them.

😳
Maybe Duff needs some help with his public comments.

“It takes a long time to implement things,” he said.
(Getting in the excuses?)

“It’s about getting the players to understand what we want; where their first pass is, and where we want them to pass it.
(The last coach spoke like that was Bob B!)

“They are new ideas and different ideas, and so that is going to take time.
So another two years of fannying about or just a manager claiming he’s all about revolution?
Game v Bristol might enlighten us.

Wtf is supposed to say?

'I've inherited players who only pass sideways and backwards so it's going to take time to teach them how to pass forward'

Maybe folks would prefer if Duff had said despite losing we were brave dominant but we have have to be patient with the process.

Lets start to measure the guy after 3 or 4 league games even I gave Russ that.

He inherited a team that too 23 points from 27 in the final 9 games and scored more goals than any since 2010/11 and equalled only once in the second tier since 1960/61.

Or better still maybe 10 to 15 games in ?
New manager, new players ( some ) plus new to him, plus implementing his own ideas

After 46 games he will need to be top 6.
Anything less will be deemed a failure.

Good post and some decent points raised.
I agree that in the stadiums, especially away, the support of managers or at least lack of descent is tangible and vastly different from the attitude of many on social media

You cannot cherry pick the season to beat the new manager with a very short stick. Most of last season was rubbish, there were about 15 decent games out of 46.

People gave Martin 2 full seasons but won't give Duff 2 months, it's ridiculous. Changing us out of last seasons style into Duff's style won't happen in a few pre-season friendlies. Specially as we will have several new players and will have lost a few as well.

10 league games then judge.

I'm a bit baffled with the team selection, and the chopping and changing, with one more pre season game to go.

I expected to see the team and formation we would we be using against Brum.

It will be interesting to see Saturday's line up.

That’s what I was thinking. And why so many u21s that probably won’t get into the match day squad.
Poor performance tonight, looked disjointed but hopefully that will come with game time together. I hope I'm wrong but I think we will struggle in the first 10 games. Maybe after that we’ll start to pick up some pace.
