City surrender provides perfect summation of QPR's dire season - Report on 22:49 - May 9 by Konk | I’ve seen City 20+ times this season as I take my son to watch them. For a team that finished 14th and rarely looked like finishing in the top half, there’s quite a buzz about the club. It’s really nice to see a load of home grown players in the team, even though some of them have taken until their mid-20’s to really establish themselves in the side and show their true ability. Cam Pring is so consistent that he reminds me a bit of Steve Finnan when he was at Fulham - never less than a 7/10. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the PL soon - defensively solid, good at carrying the ball, very positive, and has an excellent cross. This has been the 1st year of senior football for Bell and Conway, both 20 and both of whom have done really well. Vyner is 25 now and has developed into a really decent Championship CB. O’Leary in goal has improved as the season has gone on, but suspect they might need someone less prone to errors. Alex Scott will presumably be off in the summer, but with £20m or whatever they get for him, the expectation is that Pearson will spend that money wisely. Lower league signings, Rob Atkinson, Mark Sykes, and George Tanner have all had commendable seasons too. Matty James was a freebie, and keeps things ticking over nicely in midfield, doing a solid, unshowy job. Of the 3 players left on big money, Wells signed a new contract on much-reduced wages, and Da Silva and Kalas have been offered extensions, presumably also on significantly reduced terms. 13,500 season tickets sold already, and they’ve only gone on general sale this week. The view seems to be that City might be in with a shout of the the play-offs if they have a good summer. I don’t think they’re far off if the youngsters push on. |
They have stuck with Pearson for a couple of years now and it could be paying dividends. Pearson is a decent manager worth remembering he actually built the Leicester team that went onto win the Premier League.

City surrender provides perfect summation of QPR's dire season - Report on 09:13 - May 10 by daveB | don't want to defend anyone of them but looked like they were laughing at the players kids on the pitch scoring goals and dancing rather than anything else |
I watched the lap of honour / dishonour on Utube and felt a bit sad to be fair.A few of the players had young kids and its normally a time to watch them run around , score etc but it was a bit of an anticlimax. I know the team did not deliver anything and got exactly what they deserved ( practically empty stadium ) but it just added to the misery we all feel. Roberts is a hired gun and contributed below zero but like Dave said he was laughing at the kids scoring and trying to have fun not at us IMO

City surrender provides perfect summation of QPR's dire season - Report on 09:22 - May 10 by Northernr | Both him and Dickie do that a lot, charge in towards the ball to try and solve a problem, leaving all sorts of issues in the space behind them. The Blackburn and Preston home goals were a lot like that. |
I agree with your point but in defence of Dunne for the 1st Goal, he didnt run aimlessly out of position as stated further above, he saw the Bristol City set himself up ready for the cut-back and took the calculated decision to block that option, leaving Dickie on the near post and Paal at the back post. A quality cross eluded both. On the balance of probabilities, Dunne made the right call to leave those two across the 6 yard box and block the cut-back and shooting opportunity from 12 yards out. Dickie conversely has a habit of running towards the goal-line which worked well at Burnley, but I don't like defenders doing this and would prefer they mark their men than double-up on the line with the keeper. My preference next season as a pairing would be Dunne (RCB) with Clarke Salter (LCB) as I still think you need a dog as a Centre Half in the Championship as many teams have proved at our place this year. Bit ominous tho that Dunne went up to the Lower Loft on the final whistle, applauded the fans, handed over his shirt and disappeared down the tunnel not to re-appear. Maybe he has a similar view of most of the other players as many on this board.

Amos was already covering the pull back, it was dire defending from Dunne and left Paal in massive trouble

Disagree, Its gone from 'aimlessly running away from the near post' (which is incorrect as had clear purpose) which he was doubling-up on with Dickie, to being 'dire defending' which again in my opinion is incorrect as Dunne had no more than a second or two to make a decision and likely cannot see Amos from his starting position, Of the three defenders involved Dunne is arguably the least culpable as makes a decision and acts, as being harsh to Paal he's ball-watching, does'nt react and lets two men including his own man get goal-side of him. The only players who left Paal in massive trouble were Adomah and himself. Said previously fault lies 100% with Adomah over-complicating a simple clearance and loosing his footing and to call Dunne out is incorrect, as even if he stood still like Dickie did, he would not have intercepted that cross.

Fair play, great defending, well done Jimmy they still should have a lot to do after Adomah cocks up I was just suggesting that our centre half running out of position towards the ball rather than marking one of the two forwards behind him certainly didn't help the situation | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Dickie held his position and it did'nt help the situation, Dunne anticipated and moved to block the cut-back and it did'nt help either, But what Dunne did was'nt aimless, woeful or dire as you have variously described it, I really don't get how the players who never hide and actually care for our club (Dunne and Dykes being examples) get called our so often by our fans and those players who go missing or take us for mugs (too many to mention) get a pass.

I'm not suggesting he doesn't care for the club but imo he made a mistake, just the same as Adomah made one for the goal as well. I wouldn't doubt him caring either I don't want him hung drawn and quartered for it just pointing it out. Have a look at him for the 2nd goal as well. Stood several yards in front of Dickie and goes charging to the ball before changing his mind but now in no mans land marking no one then appealing for offside, several other mistakes by other players for that goal as well but if he was on loan to us he'd get a lot more stick than he does.

If a central defender is going to move out of the centre he has to 100% sure he is going to get there. Too many times they move across to slowly, or put in weak challenges and are easily beaten. However..... They are having to move because of a cock up by someone else, this time Adomah. Reminds me of Barbets first season. He got sent off a few times or gave away penalties due to desperate challenges and got grief for it. It was usually because he was having to cover Hall/Manning who were too far apart.
City surrender provides perfect summation of QPR's dire season - Report on 08:06 - May 11 with 980 views | ngbqpr | Adding my thanks Clive for a truly superlative season of reports & previews. You’ve raised your already high bar even further. The highlights of the QPR week, I pretty much set an alarm for them. FWIW I stayed for the players coming back out. Plenty stayed in the Loft & SB - certainly way more than at Stoke. Sentimental old fool that I am, I wanted to say a final thanks to some players who, for all this season’s woes, have given me a lot of pleasure. Three in particular who may be off. Dieng took the time to come over & engage with loads of fans and was very appreciative. Chair, albeit with partner and two young kids in tow, barely moved behind the centre circle. Didn’t make it to the P-Q-R corner or the Loft. Willock frankly looked embarrassed and made a pretty swift exit. Not gonna read too much into any of this tho - as you say Clive, I guess anyone we get an offer for will be off.

Your final sentence is more befitting of QPRTwitter than this Forum... 'If he (Jimmy Dunne) was on loan to us he'd get a lot more stick than he does' In literally trying to defend the indefensible (Rob Dickie's collapse in form and ability) you seem to think that aiming criticisms like aimless, woeful and dire will move the focus away from Dickie and bring the ire of our fans on Jimmy Dunne, The same Jimmy Dunne who encouraged, cajoled and back-slapped Rob Dickie throughout his season and a half long crisis in confidence, the same Jimmy Dunne who was asked to play LCB in the absence of JCS, who was asked to play RB in the absence of Laird and who was asked to play LCB with Rob Dickie and Ossie Kakay in a Back 4 (yes those 2 in a Back 4!) at key points during this season, I thought Dunne's tears at full-time at Stoke were tears of relief, or maybe it was delayed PTSD from trying to hold that Back 4 together this season at Rotherham and during other key games, Still, if we can dog-whistle and drum up some stick for the likes of Dunne, a decent bloke who cares for our club, maybe the fans will forget the season Dickie has just turned in, or some of the complete knackers who have shamed our shirt in recent seasons.

I think Dickie has been dreadful, not sure when I've defended him recently (although he played well at Burnley as did Dunne) I was just talking about that one incident where I felt Dunne made a mistake and also feel he's made a quite a few this season, the way he runs to the ball rather than holds his position is a problem for him and something he needs to improve. it wasn't meant to be anything deeper and would agree despite a poor season he's probably been the best of the centre halves.

Just to throw another light on it - Should Chair as the left midfielder have been helping Paal out at the back stick where there are two players unmarked. Tracking back is an important part of that position which is why Chair is a round peg in a square hole for that position.

Come on mate I know you have a soft spot for Dunne but this is getting ridiculous. It’s possible to say his defensive positioning is often poor (which it is btw) without getting the pitchforks out and abusing him on social media. Chair gives 100% imo but that doesn’t stop you (and others) from saying that he plays with his head down. It’s constructive criticism and the same applies to Dunne’s defensive positioning which often isn’t good enough at this level I’m afraid. Hopefully both can players can improve next season to avoid another relegation scrap. [Post edited 11 May 2023 12:17]

It might be getting ridiculous if I responded to a post saying Jimmy Dunne's 'positioning was poor', but that post does'nt exist as those were'nt the three words used. Regards his positioning often being poor, fwiw, I think you can only really make that judgement when he's playing in a settled defence with a settled formation with hopefully a championship level Right Back and Clarke Salter beside him. A top level Championship player like Josh Sargent if able to go 1 on 1 with Dunne and most Centre Halves of his type in the Championship will cause him problems, but with our budget, his fee, wages and week in week out availability, I think he should have plenty of credit in the tank with our fans after being a key figure in keeping us up this year.
