...did I miss something that our King is only English and only deserves the English National Anthem in his name? Or did he serve as the Prince of Wales with distinction for over 60 years?

Cardiff doing 'Men of Harlech' at the millenium sounded amazing.
That may be because I love 'Zulu' though.
'Rule Britannia' and 'I vow to thee my country' are not English enough so I guess I'd go with Jerusalem as the lyrics are English enough. Failing that Kate Bush 'Oh England My Lionheart' might be a tad too slow.
"Oh, England, my lionheart Peter Pan steals the kids in Kensington Park You read me Shakespeare on the rolling Thames That old river poet that never, ever ends Our thumping hearts hold the ravens in Keep the Tower from tumbling
Oh, England, my lionheart Dropped from my black spitfire to my funeral barge Give me one kiss in apple blossom Give me one wish and I'd be wassailing In the orchard my English rose Or with my shepherd who'll bring me home"
Always loved "Lionheart". Though there's an interview with Kate Bush where she cites it as an example of an early song that she found embarrassing, and the interviewer had to shut up and not admit it was one of his favourites!
(The interview was years ago, she might have changed her mind again since!)
Waterloo Sunset upthread is a great shout, not as actual national anthem but I'd love to hear it belted out by a football crowd. It's got that classic thing that it doesn't actually say anything patriotic but still makes you homesick.

I love the story behind this song. I thought this was the adopted national anthem?
I rewound the Wales match the other night to hopefully hear them sing this, but they didnt.
Its beautiful isnt it? and the translation is even more interesting!
If we were home in the Cardiff City stadium we would have as as you rightly say it is almost becoming a second anthem. In Doha it was slightly more difficult(all scattered around) but it was sung during the game.

Agree the commentary was so over the top the other night and Wales were nothing special including the messiah Mr Bale I hope we smash them next week and send them packing home, then perhaps we can see a video of Harry Kane and co dancing around the dressing room like demented chimps like Wales were in euro 2016
Fair enough, we didn't play well in the first half but improved enough in the 2nd to get something out of the game in my opinion. I wasn't privy to the commentary as i was at the game but if it was as biased as you say it was then that only mimics the OTT nature of the commentary/coverage of England games.
As for the Joe Ledley dancing etc in 2016 i was quite embarrassed as i thought we should hold ourselves to a higher standard than that but as i've stated in other comments some of that is born of or was born of the media love in with the English national side. All i want as i think any of us do is my national team to be successful the same as i want for QPR

I'm surprised half their squad even knew the national anthem 👀
Thats interesting.
Posts like that can be very difficult to put in proper context. I was born in London myself to Welsh parents and ancestry but the only reason I was born there was due to my father getting a better job and relocating his family.
I know Adam Davies father was in the services and so he was born in Germany, but that doesn't make him German? A few of the current Welsh set up have dual nationality as have the English (Grealish/Rice)
They all know the anthem because they buy in to what the FAW and the team want to achieve the older players like Rambo, Bale, Hennesey, Gunter have all ensured that that culture is part of the squad.

Quite envious of the way they use it to bring all the players and fans together pre-match the way they do, it's almost like a haka or something.
Ours was a bit like that around Euro 96 when you had Stuart Pearce and that lot belting it out, but it's a bit of a dirge of a song isn't it and when you've got Mason Mount standing there mumbling along to it it's not quite the same. Would love us to adopt Jerusalem or something and try and get a bit of that sort of thing going ourselves.

I tell you one thing, and not to pick a fight or anything but you just reminded me - I watched them before the USA game and every one of them knew all the words and absolutely belted it out.
As a supporter of the Republic of Ireland I was envious, and embarrassed. We've got lads who've played 50 and a 100 games and never bothered to learn ours.
Legacy of the late Gary Speed who started getting all the players learning the anthem and its something that has continued

A couple of years ago I was standing on a south facing roof terrace on Fleet Street looking towards Waterloo Bridge as the sun was setting. Having the Kinks greatest hits on my phone I decided 'rude not to' so played Waterloo Sunset it was glorious.
I think I took a pic and posted it with a typed few lines of the song.
The Kinks, The Move, The Small Faces (60's big on 'the' it seems)I have them all on my phone. Great 'kin music.

If the squad isn't that enthusiastic about singing the anthem we should ask why. Personally I would be beyond honoured to have the talent to represent my country, but I wouldn't sing GSTK because I don't agree with the monarchy, I don't believe in god and it's not even an England anthem. We need something more apposite and more inclusive.

There's probs not a lot more to it than 20 year old English boy probably feels a bet self conscious singing into a camera knowing 10m people are watching/listening. I think I'd probably give it the full Neville as well thinking of it like that.

I know they aren’t, er, in vogue at the moment but the Russian one is a spine tingler.
La Marseillaise too.
Went to France Ireland at the Stade de France in February, as we had tickets to the covid match that got cancelled. French fans historically get on their team's back easily (my favourite being booed after almost throwing a lead away against us and Bernard Laporte got the mic for his post match interview and started calling them all bourgeois pigs). But they've worked really hard on building a bond between the team and the fans.
The anthem. Christ. They turned the music off for the second half of it, absolutely spine tingling. I'd have stormed the Bastille with my bare hands

For England's next game, I'd like to see the team singing along to Judas Priest's "Breaking the law" while donning previously concealed rainbow hats
"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."

I hate to argue with a fellow R but oh my god please, please, please walk a day in the shoes of anyone from the UK who isn't English. The pro England media bias is horrific and incredibly one sided and has been for as long as I can remember.
For a nation of our size we should be applauded for the way we have grown and developed over the last 15 years and if you don't think or appreciate that then your not a true football fan.
Your opinion is so narrow minded it makes me so angry that your a QPR fan.
I'm not English, Welsh or Scottish, but after living nearly 40 years in England, whilst visiting Wales and Scotland freequently, I see rather more antagonism from the Welsh and Scots towards the English than vice versa.
In fact if anything, English views of Scots and Welsh are more likely to be characterised by indifference than hostility, which admittedly must be very irritating for the latter.

The English anthem should be the theme tune from Steptoe and Son. Fully inclusive and nobody needs to learn the words.

And I say that as someone who himself is the youngest of three brothers!
I don't need the urban dictionary to understand what you are referring too and dont belittle me with a link to the explanation.
I've always read your previous posts and although you are not an R appreciated the balance that you offer. In this circumstance I cannot, as you don't offer balance - if you had been a non british resident and resided in say Wales/Scotland or Ireland you would have seen first hand the media love in with anything and everything that is English football, from the Premiership to Rooney to Lampard to the golden generation to 66 to three lions on a shirt.
Its boring imbalanced and nationalistic. I remember plucky little Northern ireland beating England and the range of emotion went from its embarrassing to this is a national tragedy - not accepting that they had played better more suggesting they had an off night. English fans despite having the richest league and an enormous financial backing as well as a population of several million more than us have an incredible wealth of options available to them and should on this basis qualify and compete for major honours. That being said the celtic nations are happy to qualify and compete on global competitions and have pride in their country and their anthem!!
Your comments smack of the arrogance that we are greated with from Chelsea fans!
I would suggest that there has always been a rivalry between England and Wales and the home nations across the sporting spectrum based on the arrogance of the English media, insert WRDC or FFDC or golden balls or any reference at all.
I think most Welsh people are indifferent too the England team and only want to see us do well, we know that turning up for Wales actually means something to the players and also the fans after all our near misses. I think some England fans are jealous that the spotlight is on someone other than themselves.
Finally and i'll end on this if you have some spare time other than watching repeats of Brentford replays watch together stronger on the BBC and it will tell you alot about the team spirit and togetherness of the Welsh team without even discussing our supposed hatred of the english.

I'm not so sure - the theme was written by an Australian, Ron Grainer (who incidentally also did Dr. Who and The Prisoner etc).
While Wilfred Brambell* (aka 'Ol Man Albert) was a Dubliner and even 'Arold (Harry H Corbett) was born in Burma.
If we're going to go with a TV theme tune, then this one stands out:
Though nothing could be more English than this:
* - Another even less well known piece of trivia about Brambell was that he released a number of novelty records in the 60's and 70's, including "Secondhand", "Ragtime Ragabone Man", "Decimal Song" and "Time Marches On", a Beatles tribute.

I was at that game - possibly the most enjoyeble game of my life. But one of my memories was of the England fans who travelled, who were a real credit to their team, both before and after and who agreed that this one was one of the best away trips they'd ever had. (Ditto our game at Old Trafford, which was a great experience, despite getting humped 4-0).
Then again, I've never judged English football fans by the media, esp the red tops, just as I don't eg judge the Scots by their "Ally McLeod/Who's Like Us/We're Going to win the World Cup in Argentina" crap from back in the day when they used to qualify.
And yes, if England should win the World Cup out in Qatar, I know we'll be in for another half century of "1966 and all that", but so what?
There are a lot worse things in life to wind us up, never mind have us hating someone - just ask eg your average Ukrainian.

I think again you ignore most of my points for your own personal gain and perspective.
The Ukraine point is wholly uncalled for and suitable for another thread, not one about Wales and the merits of our success and rivalries within the game.
Again i don't generally judge an England fan by what i see in the press but it is hard to ignore. I enjoy talking to people with a different perspective and have many friendly rivalries with English supporting friends. What I also cannot abide by if you want to go down the Ukraine route is the organised violence/hooliganism which follows England around. See the Russian world cup and infact our trip to France.
Welsh fans are welcomed and yet English fans are detested, make your own assumptions it seams like you already have!

I went to that game, well, I say went to game I went over for the game but didn't get in as didn't get a ticket so about 30 of us watched it in a pub surrounded by locals.
Have to say it was a fantastic trip with both fans getting on, we got loads of beers from the locals for coming over and afterwards it was one massive party
Completely different atmosphere when we play the Welsh or Scots and you sum them both up pretty well

In anticipation of Tuesday's game, this seems as good a time as any to quote what your fellow Welshman, Jonny Owen, has to say on the matter in today's Sunday Times [my emphasis]:
"Lots of English find [Wales'] obsession with beating them somewhat bemusing. It's Germany for them and us Celtic nations are forever asked, why don't you support us like we support you? The answer is we have a massive chip on our shoulder. It's as simple as that."

I can't argue against the fact that a sizeable minority of England fans are detestable. I also think the English media, and certainly the red tops, tap into the little Englander mentality and encourage it.
But it's a bit much to be constantly identified with the worst of your countrymen. And to be bracketed with the views of the wind up merchants that write for British red tops is totally unfair. Look at the actual team and the manager. The English are also, surely, as much about Gareth Southgate, Marcus Rashford and Harry Kane as they are about the imaginary son of Kelvin MacKenzie and Rebekah Brooks who writes jingoistic nonsense. There's a huge number of English people who support Wales, Scotland and both Irelands when they're not playing England and have never worn St George's Cross underpants.
As for changing the anthem, I'm all for it. Can't stand the dirgy GSTK. Something bouncier would be lovely.
