Aretha Franklin would probably top my list. However I'm surprised that neither Elaine Paige or Annie Lennox have been mentioned so far.

This wonderful lady merits a mention.

Some great choices 'Alf' one of my favourite albums. Janis Ian one of my early favourites. Loved Debbie Harry, Chrissie Hynde, Toya Wilcox and, Joan Jet. More recently, Dido and Taylor Swift

would have opted for Aretha or Billie, but already mentioned.

Teena Marie had an amazing voice, one of my big musical regrets was not seeing her; had tickets but she died prior to the gig.....

or,

Anita Baker, great soul vocalist

No one comes even remotely close to being as technically brilliant as Ella Fitzgerald. The greatest female singer to have ever lived.

Agree with many of the names listed but two I'd add:

1. Minnie Riperton
2. Carly Simon

Gosh, tricky question but here are three outside contenders which I adore:

Lætitia Sadier

Shara Nelson:

Tracey Thorn:

"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."

Billie Hollday and Tina Turner both have a shout I reckon.

Good thread.

There's so many. Billie Holliday and Ella Fitzgerald from the jazz era, check out Clare Martin if you like jazz classics.

Amy Winehouse probably the best voice in the modern era.

Janis Joplin in the rock age.

Lots of others. Barbara Streisand a stand out. Agree Annie Lennox, underrated.

Folk - Maddie Prior. Versatile. Carole King and Joni Mitchell also.

New stuff - Agnes Obel and Ane Brun

I also love Clare Martin or dig would be the word for jazz fans. Jazz seems to suit female singers more than geezers of whom there are relatively few.

Beer and Beef has made us what we are - The Prince Regent

A couple from me.

Minnie Ripperton, especially the stuff she did with Rotary Connection. Died way too young...

Ignoring her soft rock 80s period, 1970s Tina was pretty good...

Chrissie Hynes for me

Always liked Bjork. Tania Donnelly from Belly was good too.

Good call. Belly's 'Star' album is one of my favourites of all time.

Syreeta

Fortunate enough to see her at the old Hammersmith Odeon, I think it was on one the Motown tours with various other artists in the early seventies, was married to Stevie Wonder at the time.

I agree Amy Whitehouse would have got better and better. Stevie Nicks amazing voice. I know it's unfashionable but I like a bit of Dido.

Thankfully your spellchecker is not the same one Woking uses Nix

Mimi Parker from Low for me, every time. Amazed we're 3 pages in and nothing on Low, here's one of 100's to pick from:
