Senedd election, who do you vote for? on 14:52 - Feb 17 by felixstowe_jack
The senedd pasted legislation today to allow 16 and 17 years olds to vote in the next elections. They also voted to allow foriegn nationals to vote.
Labour managed to get the legislation passed by 1 vote only after the presiding officer and deputy presiding officer voted. These two do not generally take part in senedd voting.

I'm fine with lowering the voting age to 16 but they should therefore lower the drinking, smoking, gambling, driving and all the other age limits to 16. If you're considered mature enough to vote you should be considered mature enough to do all the other things.
The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

How they were even allowed to do this without going through Westminster surprises me, but I totally agree with your sentiments, lowering the voting age is for political reasons and nothing else.
Although I'm not sure that Drakeford has the magnetism that will attract the teenagers he's hoping for, but as usual, the normal Welsh Labour voters will see him through.

Now then, the Presiding officers aren't supposed to get a vote if it's a simple majority vote matter, so what was this vote about then?
It seems odd that two people who don't normally have a vote did in fact vote to get Labours pet project through the door.
Somebody nees to look at this and see what's going on. I don't see how any government should be allowed to change the voting system without a mandate from the electorate. Did we ever see the result of the public consultation?

I think he could be a little surprised by the amount of support that Plaid gain from lowering the age. People seem to think independence will work until they grow up a bit. Recency syndrome and the vaccine roll out will get Labour some extra votes too amongst the older crowd.
My money is on a Lab / Plaid coalition.

Maybe so but if people are paying attention to how the Senedd does things i could give us several surprises. Normall the WOL is very supportive of the Senedd, then you see a story like this,

which basically calls Gething a liar, amongst other criticisms and you wonder what effect it may have.
I agree. But people don't pay attention to how the Senedd performs they just vote along traditional party lines. As you can see from this forum. Very few people change political allegiance.
More people in Wales have caught covid and died than anywhere else in the UK, despite not having the levels of Kent variant, less BAME population and small conurbations. That should mean curtains for Labour.
Gething is a liar and Drakeford is utterly useless. But hey, the vaccine has gone well? Which was of course procured by Westminster and 6 weeks ago we were holding back until the public outcry.
I can see Drakeford being a little less cautious than Boris in the move out of lockdown. He's got votes to win.

This is why politics should be taught in secondary schools, impartially though, not by Labour supporting trogs. Kids should be taught to pay attention, to think about their choice and not do what mum and dad say just because! Unfortunately that won't happen, in my sons Primary school one of his teachers went through politics but from her it seemed very left wing and anti brexit to me, no facts, nothing much about democracy and why a persons choice should be their own. He came home full of Trump is bad, brexit is bad, tories are bad but with no reasons why just that teacher had said so.

That would be the teachers & their trade union who are doing everything they can to extend their year long holiday?
A large proportion couldn’t give a toss about kids education

One of the reasons why the voting age has been lowered to 16 for the upcoming Senedd elections.

Which many of us suspect. As Highjack says, old enough to vote should mean old enough to drink, to fight in wars, to watch porn......I may have put that last one in myself....but old enough to vote makes them as responsible as adults. Lets face it, the way people behave there is a good argument for increasing the age to 25, scientists say that's when the brain is fully developed and maybe we shouldn't vote until we are fully developed...and I just talked myself out of a vote at 53
Seriously, if you notice your kids teachers are pushing a left wing agenda and then the government changes the law to allow school age people to vote, you have to question what's going on. Then you see the presiding officers both voted to get it through and you wonder what kind of democracy you live in.
