Labour (in fact the UK) do not need Blair II. What they (we) need is moderate social policies and an electable leader.

Had Momentum not blown it when Ed Miliband was crowned leader and not his brother then I honestly believe they would've won power and probably still be there.

Momentum didn’t exist when Miliband was elected.

The Trade Unions got Miliband elected in 2010. The voting system was different then. Do you mean the Trade Unions are to blame?

When it comes to election time in 4 1/2 years time the Tory press will be repeating the fact that he was in charge when the cps decided not to charge saville.
They won’t care what his or the policies of his party. Its what they do every time.

Labour haven’t won an election for 15 years. Which side in Labour has currently won an election? Starmer was elected in 2015 and wasn’t a Labour member until he left the CPS.

That new Shadow Cabinet does not have a single election winner in it, presuming Yvette Cooper is left out today in the second set of announcements.

Bazza and Lazy, not really wanting to see this going round in circles, thats been the problem with the LP for too long, I accept that we have always had some very leftish members and MPs but our aim across the party should always be to help in every way possible those hardest hit, and make life fairer for all of our society, wether pauper or millionaire ( the honest ones)

Yes go after those wealthy crooks hard that infest the UK, making out they are some great benifit to all, but be smarter than they are, shut every loophole they use to avoid paying staff decent wages and avoid taxes like its a plague but they are not wealthy because they are stupid.

There will be other 'Cummins' in the background waiting to fill his role and the LP has to make sure they use the media outside of our Tory infested press to make sure fair points can be made.

Though we have some difference in how that can be achieved from the LP, our aims are within touching distance, by all means keep the leader and MP's earning their wages on their toes but lets at least give them a chance, Corbyn was, unfortunately he was not good enough and I think he had a fair chance, one thing every LP leader has to put up with is a very biased press, not quite reached the USA levels on our airwaves yet but it is something going back generations the LP has to try and overcome.

The real 'heroes' of our society are now finally being recognised but it has take this truly awful virus to get across to many just how important our NHS and every worker working still in whatever 'front line' service that is needed to try and keep what we have come to expect, so so tough and yet they are risking their lives for the benifit of all.

Didn't realise you were a member. Nice one.

Other than arguing our press are worse than the US, I agree fully with what you said.

When we come out of Coronavirus Labour have got an opportunity but they’ll probably blow it.

If the Tories tell us it’s another bout of prolonged austerity and more tax rises to pay for this (we are paying more tax now than we’ve ever done) I don’t think the public will stand for it.

If a party stands for greater self sufficiency, invest heavily in its own manufacturing and stop importing cheap Chinese products (yes, that’s all of us) and treat that State as a pariah, it’ll transform the country and where elections will be won.

Not being a member of a political party should not be held against him for a period when he was head of the CPS. I would imagine when you get a job like that you have to renounce political affiliations so that you are seen as impartial - certainly Judges have to sever any political links when they are appointed.

I would say he is on the traditional soft left of the labour party but time will tell. It would be refreshing to have the government held to account by the opposition in a forensic manner. I am sure you will not agree but it felt like a load of incompetents playing at it these last few years.

There is nothing to stop anyone becoming a member of a political party, including employment in the CS. Until recently I worked for a very prominent MP who's head of staff was a VERY senior Civil Servant and has been a Labour member for 30 years.

Wasn't holding it against him by the way, was just making the point that he or his cabinet had nothing to do with any Labour election wins, the last of which was 2005.

We need to squash the idea that the Labour Party is full of experienced election winners that are being cruelly denied by Momentum and the 'Hard Left' or anyone else. Labour's votes have been on a steady decline in most of it's heartlands since 1997, with the exception of a blip in 2017. I don't think this has anything to do with any faction. It's more to do with our Parliamentary system, Media, and demographics of the country.

Yeh it's got a side that won elections and a side that reckons it won arguments.

when asked what she thought was her greatest achievement Thatcher is said to have replied New Labour and Tony Blair

seems like winning the argument was quite important to her

happy to be proven wrong but the likes of Keir Starmer and Lisa Nandy are not capable of structural change on the level that is needed to fix this country. this isn't football, I don't support 'the red team' if they don't give me a reason to

Its not the mps that have stopped me voting for the labour party the only party i have ever voted for in the last 2 general elections, it is the loud mouth journos and celebs that trail along with them the owen jones, ash sarkars, paul masons, femis and eddie izzards accusing me of transphobia, homophobia, islamaphobia and hating palestine just because i dont swallow the whole party line on everything they preach

It seems to me that too many Tory supporters talk about ideological differences in the Labour party and too many Labour supporters fall for it.

Your friend works for the Judiciary and SKS worked for the Civil Service. Very different roles and obligations. There was nothing to stop SKS being a Labour member while in the CPS.

Again, not holding it against him anyway.

I looked up the CPS code of conduct and political affiliation is discouraged - you need permission from a manager to engage in any political endeavour so very likely the contract for a director would require them to not be a member of a party. The civil service crosses over with but is a different case from the justice system where impartiality is key. You are keen to make a point though so I will leave it there.

When I started work in 1978 I was paying 33% income tax and the highest earners were handing over 85% in tax.Now it’s 20% and 50%,so I can’t see how we’re paying more tax now than before.
Mind you back then we had library’s,youth clubs, social services and a properly funded nhs. Before austerity ripped the heart out of the country for those people who needed the public services.

Nice post. I’d missed the original by SteveC.

The various tax increases proposed by Labour in 2017 and 2019 were both lower than anytime under Thatcher.

It's an interesting comparison. We do spend 7 percent of gdp on the NHS today, compared to 4 percent in the late 70 s. I guess the treatments are a lot more expensive nowadays, and with the ageing population demand is only heading one way regardless of coronavirus. It would be interesting to know how all the stealth taxes compare nowadays compared to then.
