Why do some songs, 'though very sad, give us pleasure? Try this one. 20:45 - Oct 26 with 4881 viewsDavillin

As I was listening to some of the Perry Como songs on my computer, I was struck by this question, "Why do some songs, 'though very sad, give us pleasure?" This one does me.

Before I give some of my possible answers, I'd like to hear your answers, please.

I don't care. I'm old. I don't have to.

"Enjoy it"? That song is almost as old as I am, and it's the best version of the dozens I have heard over the years.

And that guitar! It, too, might be as old as I am, and he has the lightest touch that it deserves.

Many, many thanks, my friend.

p.s., the lyrics for those who like this classic:

Hear that lonesome whippoorwill
He sounds too blue to fly
The midnight train is whining low
I'm so lonesome I could cry

I've never seen a night so long
When time goes crawling by
The moon just went behind the clouds
To hide its face and cry

Did you ever see a robin weep
When leaves begin to die?
Like me, he's lost the will to live
I'm so lonesome I could cry

The silence of a falling star
Lights up a purple sky
And as I wonder where you are
I'm so lonesome I could cry

Wow. I had to wait for the credits to be sure it was Louis Armstrong singing. I've never heard such a sensitive presentation from him. He was Huuuge, and this makes him huuuger in my ears.

Thanks.

Great song. Sean Connery is my favourite James Bond, but On Her Majesty's Secret Service is my favourite James Bond film.

Sean Connery is the Daddy of Bonds I agree.
OHMSS probably runs Goldfinger a close second. Great films

In best order

Dr No
Thunderball
Goldfinger
From Russia With Love
OHMSS (if only 1963 Connery could have done that one instead of Big Facking Fry)
Maybe a couple of the Craig ones, Casino Royale, Skyfall (because of Dench)

The rest nowhere.

Oops sorry Dav. Get our own bloody thread.

Nah, Monmouth. For me, the best threads are always the ones which center on music, books, movies, etc., even when -- perhaps especially when -- they drift off the course set by the O.P.

So many kindred spirits who enjoy writing about and reading such things that they enjoy.

And I always have a couple of new threads in mind to start it off on its way again.

Thanks to you, Monmouth, and the other posters who truly bring pleasure to the rest of us. If you do start "your own bloody thread," someone will surely nudge it off into one other related subjects. I do it from time to time, I must admit.

Here's another "cryin' song" that's almost as old as I am, recorded by giants of the music business. The melody and lyrics are as well-matched and blended as any song ever recorded.

Don't know if this qualifies.

But if nothing else it's a chance to hear Warren Haynes' gorgeous guitar (and Dave M's great voice). IMHO, of course. Gives me goosebumps anyway.
