Signed for Hibs until the end of the season.

Fair enough, although he never made a first team appearance for them.

Ah. Didn't realise that, but I remember his publicity picture featured him in the Celtic hoops.

Can't possibly overlook James Sharp.

Where was that, SL? Wikipedia says he was only a youth player at Celtic. He's just before my Dale time started.

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

We had him on loan from Bolton and he impressed me, but as ever it was probably a wages thing that prevented us signing him. I'm guessing after all these years that I saw the picture in the programme or th'Observer.

Very few other sources available in those days.

Although Col said 'recent', Derek Parlane has to be included for what he did for the club.

John Halpin and Willie Garner are two others, if we're struggling.

Ah... Derek Parlane, surely one of the best players ever to have graced Spotland?
A Rangers legend who arrived at Spotland probably as a result of knowing Eddie Grey from their Leeds United days. Easy on the eye and way too good for the fourth division players around him that probably didn't give him the service he should have had. Still 10 goals from 42 games wasn't a bad haul. The most memorable for me being a goal scored at the Sandy Lane end when he took the ball on the half-way line, strolled past a defender and fired into the bottom corner from about 25 yards - pure class. Apparently he lives in Lytham St Annes - we should invite him to do the half time draw sometime.

Remember that goal, it was an important one too wasn't it? Could've been against Stockport but not sure.

His goal against Stockport was a header.

I've just looked up all the goals he scored that season and none are as described, although I am relying on Les Barlow's rather brief descriptions.

Perhaps it was from 1987/88.

I have no idea who we were playing - I have seen so many games there are few that I recall with any clarity these days! It was a belter of a goal, the keeper only moved to pick it out of the net! The 1986/7 home game vs Stockport County was played on May 6th - so you may be correct if the win (2-1 and 50 points) kept us out of the bottom places and above Burnley(49 points) and the re-election candidate Torquay and Lincoln (both on 48 points).

Just found this:

Sounds like the goal you describe was against Bolton. Some interesting reading though!
