Matter of principle really and I'm fully in support of the guy.

If others are allowed to wear headgear and cover their faces for 'religious reasons' then why can't this guy? I'm sick of the double standards shown in this country!

He's got a memory like a sieve though.

You don't have to go to a place of worship (church) to be religious. Religion can a personal thing and just because you don't agree with gay marriage doesn't mean you must be some religious zealot.

you're right, you just have to be a bigot and a homophobe

I can't find a colander that's a decent fit these days.

If you can fill the unforgiving minute. With sixty seconds' worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it, And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

You haven't been able to give a reason why it's not OK even though I asked you to do so.

And it's 'accepts' not 'excepts'.

I asked because I was interested if you had an actual reason to justify your view. Some way in which two men or two women getting married has any impact whatsoever on your life.

As expected, you don't - you're just a bigot. As you were.

The reason I ask, is that I cannot believe that in a country where marriage is supposedly so sacrosanct that half of the population believe that 2 men or 2 women shouldn't be able to get married as it 'damages the institution' and, indeed, in many States, 2 men or 2 women still cannot legally get married for the same reason, someone from a 'church of the flying spaghetti monster' which has some sort of 'religious' attire involving wearing a colander on their head is LEGALLY able to marry two people !

Wow - just wow !

Not a dig at you by the way - you are obviously not a supporter of the religious right !

Not offering the right to marry is just the start. A Couple of states over here have passed laws that essentially allow a business to refuse to serve someone based on their religious beliefs.

It's sad.

Really?

I assume that those religious beliefs will probably not mean Christianity?

I love the US - it's a wonderful country to visit and has some of the most spectacular and beautiful places I've ever been to. I have visited many, many times, for both holidays and work. I have also always found the people to be brilliant - friendly and welcoming.

BUT - I find the move towards the religious right in the States to be genuinely worrying.

Like you, Lisa, I've been across the pond dozens of times. I've traversed the so-called Bible Belt many times but I've yet to encounter anybody that would even begin to resemble one of these Zealots I've read so much about. Not one. Not ever.

I have two particular real life examples that I will always remember.

One was someone that I worked with on a case for 4 years who I only later found out was Michelle Bachmann's brother so in hindsight not so surprising. He was a Chicago based lawyer at the time.

The second I actually met in Africa (he was from the US) - the father was an absolute staunch Republican of the Tea Party variety, and the mother and 2 children (both in their late teens) were Democrats. Their arguments were hilarious to an outsider. I had several conversations with him over dinner (he was a nice guy) but his views were almost incomprehensible to me. He kept asking me about what it was like living in London, surrounded by Moslems - I wasn't really sure what he thought London was like.

'Liberals' being people that don't get irrationally irate about other people that have absolutely no impact on their lives you mean?

Or was there something else about them that was "miss pleasing" ?

Isn't that fairly obvious? Marriage as known in our society was introduced by the church as a means by which a man and woman were joined together under the eyes of God. Whether or not anyone believes in marriage, in god, or in the make-up of the parties involved is irrelevant to this fact (assuming it is a fact and I've got that right).

I can see why some people oppose same sex marriage if they have strong religious convictions (although dgt doesn't strike me as the type).

I'm not saying I approve or not, but marriage is clearly evolving into something it didn't used to be. Some people don't like change.

Does that make me invisible to religious fundamentalists?

You don't have to "except" (sic) anything. If two people want to get married and they happen to be of the same sex/gender, it's none of your or anyone else's business.

Maybe not, but I would still venture to suggest the prospect of it raises a laugh in Workingmens' Clubs the length and breadth of these islands.

I doubt Working Men's clubs are representative of nationwide opinion and I doubt same sex marriage is often on the discussion agenda between bingo and open the box. Are there many left anyway? I used to enjoy drinking with my old man in Morriston workies.
