Except this isn't talking about just back to the 1880s. It's saying that from the 1880s the changes have been greater and rapid than anything seen before in the proxy records (tree rings and ice cores, which go back 10's of thousands of years).

it is the sea, or rather the organisms in it that is helping us out - by sucking CO2 out of the atmosphere
ironically, phytoplankton love the organic crap we pump into the sea - , this is part of the cause of algae blooms -(only 2% of this is the harmful kind which kills fish) - so generally speaking the more we pollute the sea with organic waste (not chemical or plastic), the more ocean life (as plankton is bottom of food chain), -
